Top 10 Best Places To Visit In Finland | Traveling Insider

Hey guys, welcome to traveling insider, today we’ll look at the top 10 best places to visit in Finland.

From the vibrant art-filled cities of Helsinki and Turku to the depths of the boreal forests and the thinly inhabited outer archipelago, Finland remains a relatively unknown corner of Europe. This is likely because it is so far from the mainstream tourist routes, but the country's many cultural and historical attractions add to the unspoiled natural surroundings to make it an ideal destination. Its lakes fall, rivers and vast wilderness areas, along with the certainty of snow in the winter make it a Nordic playground for both winter and summer activities.

Helsinki is the main point of entry for most visitors to Finland. The busy Baltic port is where you'll find the most important museums, as well as architecture by some of the greatest Finnish architects, especially Eliel Saarinen, who designed Helsinki's Railway Station, a landmark of early modern architecture.

Within easy reach of Helsinki are the charming smaller cities of Turku and Porvoo. But it would be a shame to confine a trip only to the Baltic coast when so much beautiful open countryside beckons. To the west lie the Finnish lakes, and in the north is the vast area beyond the Arctic Circle, home of the midnight sun, northern lights, and some of Europe's best winter sports.

Winter or summer, Finland offers plenty of things to do. Plan your trip with our list of the top attractions and places to visit in Finland.

Top best places to visit in Tampere, Finland
Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the biggest inland town in the whole Nordic region.

Tampere is called a people’s city because of an excellent quality of life.

There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned here that makes this city a great place to live, study and work.

This is a major Finnish hub for information, technology, research, business, education, culture and sport.

The town lies on a narrow isthmus between Lake Pyhajarvi in the south and Lake Nasijarvi, which reaches far to the north.

Important buildings, like the Town Hall, Old Church and City Theatre are located on a central square Keskustori.

Hameenkatu Street, The main avenue of Tampere, starts at main railway station, passes Keskustori Square and ends at Hameenpuisto Park.

At the end of this street is the Statue of Liberty, City Library and the Church of Alexander.

Tampere is a city full of statues
And nice architecture.

The Finlayson Area has an interesting historic factory complex.

You can find here also the not too big but very popular Finlayson Church.

And Finlayson Palace, with a small garden.

Near the palace is Nasi Park with baroque style mansion and a Memorial for the victims of the shipwreck of S/S-Kuru.

From the memorial site you’ll have a great view over Sarkanniemi Adventure Park and the lake Nasijarvi.

The best view is from 168m Nasinneula Tower.
You can see the whole city and lakes.

On top of the Pyynikki ridge is another observation tower. When the weather is nice it offers a surprisingly good view of Tampere and surrounding lakes, and they have the best donuts in town.

Tampere from Above | Finland Drone 2K

Tampere from above!

Relieve some stress by exploring one of the most beautiful cities in Finland from the bird's-eye perspective of a drone.

Today we're flying over the most populous inland city in the Nordic countries, Tampere (Tammerfors in Swedish)! Join me in discovering the beauty of the city architecture, its two lakes (Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi), and the famous rapids linking them that have served as power source throughout history.

Our flight will begin on the eastern side of the rail tracks, taking a look at the Hotel Torni Tampere (2014 - 88.5m/290ft). Very close to it we'll spot the construction work on the new Tampere Arena (Uros Live), which will host hockey games, offices, commercial development, housing, hotel, and casino. After a brief look at the Tampere Hall (Tampere talo - which holds the Moomin Museum, concerts, and congresses), and the main building of the University of Tampere; we'll cross the tracks to observe the Train Station from up close - with its brick walls welcoming you to this old industrial city.

Hämeenkatu will be teased as we fly near Stockmann on our way to the Cathedral (1907 - 64m/209ft), and the firefighter station - whose unusual tower won't leave you indifferent. We'll go back to the southern part of the Tammerkoski prior to flying north again to explore the dams, Finlayson's palace, and the Milavida Museum. Soon after, the bright colors of Särkänniemi amusement park will welcome us as we focus on the rides. Due to the heavy winds, we won't be able to climb to the top of Näsinneula Observation Tower (1971 - 167.9m/550ft), which is the tallest free-standing structure in Finland and the tallest observation tower in the Nordic countries; and also hosts a revolving restaurant.

We'll still see Näsinneula in the background as we circle above Amuri Workers' Museum Quarter and follow Hämeenpuisto south towards Alexander Church (1881). I hope you enjoy the architecture of the Swedish school (Tampereen ruotsinkielinen yhteiskoulu - Koulukatu 14), the yellow building with the vane on top. Soon we'll reach one of the iconic landmarks of Tampere, the Pyynikki Observation Tower (1929 - 26m/85ft), which stands 75m/246ft above the level of the adjacent lake Pyhäjärvi and has great views of the city. It's located in the heart of a great forest that locals love to visit.

Next, we'll go back to the city's heart: the rapids and the central square. We'll squeeze between the Finlayson and Tampella factories, fly above the waterfall, and circle around the chimney of G Livelab as we enjoy the views. The central square, Keskustori, features the City Hall (1890), Tampere Theatre (1913), the Old Church (1825), Laikku Culture House (1925), the Sumelius House (1901) and other exciting buildings. However, the building that won't go unnoticed is the Tampere Central Library (Metso, 1986) featuring an exterior made of granite, wiborgite, copper, and glass. We couldn't leave Tampere without visiting the Ratina stadium and mall, the suspension bridge, and the Orthodox Church of Alexander Nevalainen and St. Nicholas - a true jewel of the city.

As a bonus, we'll take a look at the Vehoniemi Observation tower, located less than 30 mins away from Tampere and which offers an amazing view of Roine lake. Next door there's a car museum, which makes this area a great excuse to explore nature near Tampere.

Hopefully, after our short flight, you'll want to visit Tampere again and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of a city enclosed between lakes, a gorgeous mix of industrial and modern buildings, and the charming hospitality of the locals.

If you're curious about Helsinki neighborhoods and other breathtaking towns, don't forget to subscribe!

Now sit back, relax, and enjoy our flight together. Tervetuloa!

Finland Travel

A peninsula with the Gulf of Finland to the south and the Gulf of Bothnia to the west, the country has land borders with Sweden to the northwest, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east. Estonia is south of the country across the Gulf of Finland. Finland is situated in the geographical region of Fennoscandia, which also includes Scandinavia. Finland's population is 5.5 million (2014), staying roughly on the same level over the past two decades. The majority of the population is concentrated in the southern region.[9] In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union.

Finland is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital Helsinki, local governments in 317 municipalities,[10] and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands. Over 1.4 million people live in the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which produces a third of the country's GDP. From the late 12th century, Finland was an integral part of Sweden, a legacy reflected in the prevalence of the Swedish language and its official status. In the spirit of the notion of Adolf Ivar Arwidsson (1791–1858), we are no-longer Swedes, we do not want to become Russians, let us therefore be Finns, the Finnish national identity started to establish. Nevertheless, in 1809, Finland was incorporated into the Russian Empire as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. In 1906, Finland became the second nation in the world to give the right to vote to all adult citizens and the first in the world to give all adult citizens the right to run for public office.[11][12] Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, Finland declared itself independent.

In 1918, the fledgling state was divided by civil war, with the Bolshevik-leaning Reds supported by the equally new Soviet Union, fighting the Whites, supported by the German Empire. After a brief attempt to establish a kingdom, the country became a republic. During World War II, the Soviet Union sought repeatedly to occupy Finland, with Finland losing parts of Karelia, Salla and Kuusamo, Petsamo and some islands, but retaining independence. Finland joined the United Nations in 1955 and established an official policy of neutrality. The Finno-Soviet Treaty of 1948 gave the Soviet Union some leverage in Finnish domestic politics during the Cold War era. Finland joined the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 1969, the NATO Partnership for Peace on 1994,[13] the European Union in 1995, the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in 1997,[13] and finally the Eurozone at its inception, in 1999.

Finland was a relative latecomer to industrialization, remaining a largely agrarian country until the 1950s. It rapidly developed an advanced economy while building an extensive Nordic-style welfare state, resulting in widespread prosperity and one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.[14] However, since 2012 Finnish GDP growth has been negative, with a preceding nadir of −8% in 2009.[15] Finland is a top performer in numerous metrics of national performance, including education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of life, and human development.[16][17][18][19] In 2015, Finland was ranked first in the World Human Capital[20] and the Press Freedom Index, and as the most stable country in the world in the Failed States Index,[21] and second in the Global Gender Gap Report.[22] A large majority of Finns are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church,[23] though freedom of religion is guaranteed under the Finnish Constitution.

Let’s explore the best places to visit in Finland.

Number 12. Kuopio.

Kuopio, one of the gems of Northern Savonia's Finnish lake area, is tucked between the mirror-like waters of Kallavesi and sweeping swaths of spruce trees that flicker between arctic white and spinach green with the changing of the seasons.

Number 11. Vaasa.

Vaasa is a proud remnant of Sweden's long foray into this western tip of Finland, and it is a town that combines its rich history with a vibrant university environment and a contemporary edge. In the downtown area, visitors will see national monuments (especially important in this town, where the turbulence of Russian invasions was felt more than anyplace else), as well as restored mill buildings where lecture rooms now discuss technology and innovation.

Number 10. Hameenlinna.

Sleepy Hameenlinna is located in southern Finland, between the lakes and inland wilds of Tavastia, and is surrounded by swaths of green evergreen forest.

Number 9. Seurasaari.

The beautiful and quiet island of Seurasaari, surrounded by the Baltic seas just west of Helsinki, is undoubtedly Europe's most recognized open-air museum. It does a good job of displaying the old Finnish way of life, with aged timber barns and painted manors covered with wooden carvings, bobbing rowing boats, and primitive shelters.

Number 8. Koli National Park.

The Koli National Park, which hugs the rocky shores of Lake Pielinen as it scars its way through the heartlands of south-central Finland and North Karelia, is home to absolutely spectacular panoramas of primeval spruce forests and waterside fir groves. It's hardly surprise that the region has served as an inspiration for artists and romantics, and there's no doubt that the area's spectacular backcountry attractions have helped it become the popular hiking and winter sports (there are two ski resorts here) destination that it is today.

Number 7. Turku.

Turku was the most vital and active town in all of Finland for many centuries, a medieval boom that is today reflected in the immense number of historical buildings here, from the huge bulwarks and subterranean dungeons of Turku Castle to the square-cut tower of the magnificent Turku Cathedral.

Number 6. Archipelago National Park.

The picturesque Archipelago National Park, which juts out into the frigid Baltic on the farthest south-western frontier of Finland, is a succession of innumerable islands, cays, sandbanks, projecting coastal cliffs, and shattered lands. Some of the islands here are small, with just a mound or a rocky salt-washed summit visible to guests aboard chugging touring boats.

Number 5. Helsinki.

Helsinki is certainly one of the most bucket-list cities in Scandinavia, serving as the pounding cultural, economic, and political heart of the country. It erupts from its position on the outskirts of Uusimaa, with the Baltic lapping up against its many inlets and harbours, and its spectacular gold-gilded and whitewashed architectural rises belying Petersburg and one extremely ambitious tsarist renovation from two centuries ago.

Number 4. Oulu.

Oulu, on the northern gulf, faces Sweden and is a picturesque town with islands and bridges, rich neighborhoods, and prominent colleges. The banks of the brackish River Oulujoki outline the town core in the summer, breaking it up into a succession of lovely cays as the tendrils of the delta spread outwards to meet the salty waves of Bothnia.

Number 3. Lapland.

From the snow-covered woodlands of Riisitunturi to the harsh and windswept fells of the north, the ice rollers of the Gulf of Bothnia to the blasted boreal tundra of the Arctic Circle, Lapland is every inch the mysterious, unspoiled, untrodden wilderness you'd anticipate.

Number 2. Porvoo.

Porvoo, a city with almost 600 years of history, is one of Finland's few genuine medieval villages. It may be found clinging to the picturesque terrain of the Baltic Coast just east of Helsinki; a patchwork of crooked wood dwellings painted in red and orange and historically-rich town squares paved in cobble, all flanked by the town's onetime Swedish overlords.

Number 1. Tampere.

Tampere, a mash-up of industry and innovation, Finnish hospitality, and dynamic arts, is wedged between the two massive lakes of Pyhajarvi and Nasijarvi, all of which provide unlimited chances for boat cruise, hiking, and cross-country skiing in the winter.
