Verlassene Orte: Sanatorium Wienerwald Feichtenbach (Lebensborn) // Abandoned Places Austria
Das Sanatorium Wienerwald war eine Anfang des 20. Jhdts. errichtete
Lungenheilstätte nahe Pernitz im Piestingtal (Feichtenbach). Diese war bis zum Anschluss
Österreichs an NS-Deutschland 1938 sehr beliebt und zählte viele prominente
Patienten. Im Zuge der „Arisierung“ wurden die beiden jüdischen Gründer
des Sanatoriums, Hugo Kraus und Arthur Baer, enteignet.
Kraus unternahm daraufhin im Sanatorium einen Suizidversuch und verstarb
wenig später. Baer flüchtete nach Böhmen, wo er 1941 ums Leben kam.
Im Dritten Reich wurde das Gebäude als Mütterheim für den Verein Lebensborn
genutzt. Ein Ziel war, bei schwangeren, aber unverheirateten Frauen, die
Abtreibung zu verhindern um die Geburtenziffer „arischer“ Kinder zu erhöhen.
(Mütterheim „Heim Ostmark“, „Heim Wienerwald“ )
Nach dem Krieg diente es als Erholungsheim für tausende unterernährte Kinder
aus Wien. 1950 erwarb der Österreichische Gewerkschaftsbund das Gebäude,
welches daraufhin massiv umgebaut wurde. Bis 2002 diente das ehemalige
Sanatorium als Urlaubsheim bzw. später als Erholungs- und
Rehabilitationszentrum. Danach stand das Gebäude ohne Nutzung leer.
2007 wurden von einer Frau im Gebäude ohne Genehmigung dutzende Hunde
und Katzen untergebracht, welche bis zur Auflösung des illegalen „Tierheims“
unter katastrophalen hygienischen Bedingungen gehalten wurden. Zunehmend
interessierten sich auch „Urbexer“ und „Geisterjäger“ für das verlassene Areal.
Im letzten Jahrzehnt wurden große Teile des Gebäudes von ungebetenen
Besuchern zerstört; auch entstanden Gerüchte über Geistererscheinungen
und okkulte Rituale mit Tierschlachtungen. Das Gelände wird mittlerweile
überwacht, ein Betreten des Gebäudes ist verboten.

The Sanatorium Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) was a pulmonary sanatorium built
at the beginning of the 20th century near Pernitz in the Piesting Valley.
It was very popular until Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and attracted
many prominent patients. In the course of the Aryanization the two Jewish founders
of the sanatorium, Hugo Kraus and Arthur Baer, were expropriated.
Kraus then attempted suicide in the sanatorium and died a short time later.
Baer fled to Bohemia, where he died in 1941. In the Third Reich, the building was used
as a maternity home for the Lebensborn organization. One goal was to prevent
abortion among pregnant but unmarried women in order to increase the birth rate
of Aryan children.
After the war, it served as a recovery home for thousands of malnourished children
from Vienna. In 1950, the Austrian Trade Union Federation acquired the building,
which was then massively rebuilt. Until 2002, the former sanatorium served as a
vacation home and later as a recreation and rehabilitation center. After that, the building
remained empty without any use.
In 2007, a woman housed dozens of dogs and cats in the building without permission,
which were kept in disastrous hygienic conditions until the illegal animal shelter
was dissolved. More and more also Urbexers and Ghost hunters were interested
in the abandoned area.
In the last decade large parts of the building were destroyed by uninvited visitors;
Rumors also arose about occult rituals with animal slaughters and ghost sightings.
The area is now under surveillance, and it is forbidden to enter the building.
