Galapagos Land Adventure in Puerto Ayora | ECUADOR

I took a Galapagos cruise and then decided to explore Puerto Ayora by land and stayed in a hotel.

This is the second time I've visited in Galapagos. In 2013 I went on an 8 day Galapagos cruise on a sail boat and then rented my guide's house for 5 weeks in Puerto Ayora.

This time I returned for a Galapagos tour with Metropolitan Touring on the La Pinta cruise ship.

You can find the highlight reel + all five days of my Galapagos cruise here:

Highlights:

Day 2:
Day 3:
Day 4:
Day 5:

And my hotel here:

Always check with your airline for entry requirements for Ecuador and Galapagos. As well, you can get information from the Ecuadorian government, but check for the date it was last updated as the website is not always current:

Here is information about Metropolitan:

Huge thanks to Metropolitan Touring for inviting me on this tour and LATAM Airlines for the flight.

GALAPAGOS: ISLA SANTA CRUZ - Travel Guide to ALL SIGHTS and ISLANDS in 4K

The Galapagos in Ecuador is one big animal paradise. Nowhere in the world can you see wild animals so easily in their natural environment. We start on the island of Baltra and travel to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. There we visit the Charles Darwin Research Center, named after the explorer and naturalist who based the Theory of Evolution on the animals of the Galapagos Islands. We also visit Tortuga Bay and Las Grietas, highlights with many more animals. Throughout the island we see land iguanas, marine iguanas, sea lions, giant tortoises, pelicans, crabs, tropical fish and birds.

This year we travel all over the world and after Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, The Bahamas, USA and Mexico, Galapagos is already our twelfth destination. Follow us on this world tour, first in Ecuador, then Brazil and then to many more beautiful destinations! We also cross to Asia, Oceania and Africa! We travel non-stop all year round and film everything. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or

We picked up our empty cargo van in November 2020 and built her into our tiny home on wheels over the next year. We finally hit the road in January 2022 alongside our sweet pup, Hopps, with a motto to live with less to experience more. After 7 months of life on the road, new adventures were calling and we decided to put our van in storage and head out on a backpacking journey across the world! Our goal is to explore and really experience different countries and cultures and inspire people to step out of their comfort zone and do what makes them happy. Visit the Famous GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, ECUADOR | Galapagos Animals | Galapagos Beaches | Attractions

We could not go to Ecuador and not see the world-famous Galapagos Islands. We stayed in the main town of Puerto Ayora. Even though we were there for a short time we could not believe the diversity in the landscapes as well as the coolest Galapagos animals. To be able to be so close to wildlife and for it to be unbothered by our presence was a fun experience. We saw the giant tortoises at El Chato Ranch and one of the nicest Galapagos beaches at Playa el Garrapatero. We cannot wait to explore more of the Galapagos Islands such as San Cristobal and Isla Isabela.

We spoke about our time in Ecuador on this Ecuador-based podcast:

First Impression of Galapagos... One of the TOP Places On Our Bucket List!

See how to travel from Guayaquil, Ecuador to #PuertoAyora on Isla Santa Cruz, #Galapagos Islands. Take note that most people spend a small fortune to visit Galapagos by taking cruises which cost well into five figures. In this series of #TravelVlogs, we’re going to show you how to do more and spend less. So BE sure to watch our entire vlog series so that you can plan out your travel activities.

Because of how far the islands are from the mainland AND the entire Galapagos cluster of islands is an archipelago of volcanic islands, food & supplies are shipped in, which contributes to higher prices. But you don’t have to spend as much as you think, which allows more travelers to check this destination off their bucket list and experience the Galapagos sooner than people imagine.

Galapagos Islands along with all of Ecuador uses USD as their currency.

Before leaving Guayaquil, we paid for a $20 transit pass at the airport that must be purchased per traveler. Upon arriving to the Seymour Airport on Isla Baltra, we had to pay the $100 Galapagos Island Fee which goes towards maintenance of the islands, conservation, protection of the animals, infrastructure and the employees doing all the work (we found this out from one of the island’s National Park Rangers.)

After going through the airport, there’s a $5 bus fee to go to the Baltra Ferry which is $1 fee to cross the Itabaca Channel. Once you cross the channel, there’s two options to head 40ish km to Puerto Ayora:
Option 1: Take the $25 Taxi which is the island’s “transport” service and is 4-door pick-up truck
Option 2: Take the bus for $5

We ended up splitting the $25 taxi fee with a couple from the Netherlands, as it’s a directional fee, not a per-person fee! SCORE!

Stay tuned for more Galapagos travel vlog vids!

Galapagos: Watch Before Going! We Spent a Month in the Galapagos, Was it Worth the Time and Expense?

The Galapagos Islands are filled with amazing life both on land and in the sea. There are so many things to do here from snorkeling with sea turtles, sharks, rays, and tropical fish to hiking up to view points and through lava fields. But the Galapagos are also very expensive, have lots of regulations, and take a long time to get to. So was all the wildlife and scenery worth the time and expense?

We travel the world full-time and we spent a month living in Puerto Ayora, on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. We learned so much while we were here and these are our thoughts on visiting the islands.

Galapagos Islands: Puerto Ayora

Galapagos Islands - Summer 2018 - Episode #11

Between tours and adventures, the Town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island deserves a it’s own video. Here are some sights and sounds from the most populated town in the Galapagos!
Thanks for watching! For those interested in the logistics and cost of this trip. Check out the information below.

Logistics for Santa Cruz Island stay (4 nights/5 Days)
• Hostel North Seymour, Lobo Marino y Duncan N. 258, Puerto Ayora. 4 night stay for 2 people ($221.76 total, or $110.88 each). Complimentary breakfast and water bottle re-fills included. I booked through Expedia.com. in January (5 months before my stay). Hotel North Seymour is a cash only location, so you pay when you arrive.
• Taxi from docks to hotel (10 min trip) = $2 (you can walk… I had broken luggage)
• Highlands Tour: we used a taxi which cost $45 for two people on a half day trip. This included stops at El Chato Tortoise Reserve, Los Gemelos (collapsed craters), and the Lava tunnels. The El Chato Tortoise ranch also cost $5 to enter.
• North Seymour Dive Trip with Eagle Ray Tours $230 each with Eagleray Tours ( Due to boat repairs, Eagle Ray Tours could not run the trip. They worked with Albatros Tours ( to make sure we got on another boat for the same tour.
• Bartolome Island Tour with Eagle Ray Tours ($235 each). Full day with land and snorkeling excursions.
• Food Expenses can obviously very. We had 3 breakfasts and 2 lunches included between the hotel and tours. I purchased 4 dinners, and 1 lunches for $55 combined (no Alcoholic drinks or sodas)…and maybe another $10 of other stuff like ice cream cones and the like.
• Gratuities: I spent roughly $45 tipping on tours and restaurants.
• Ferries between Islands cost $30 one way. We booked our ferry from Santa Cruz to Isabella, and from Isabella back to Santa Cruz with Eagle Ray Tours. I recommend booking your ferry passage as soon as you can as they do fill up.

Total Cost for the Santa Cruz leg of the trip:
• $737,88 (without ferries to and from the island)

GALAPAGOS! Lots of Tortoises and Puerto Ayora | Ecuador

Puerto Ayora definitely had its highs and lows for us. We were excited to get to see who actually lived in the Galapagos (something you don't hear about from people who go on cruises) however, not all of our interactions were as positive as we hoped they would be. From restaurant staff who ignored us (which we don't blame them we'd probably be annoyed by tourists too and prefer locals) to tour agencies who lied to us and said if we had asked the day before that they could figure something out (which we did and they said no and kept almost $300 telling us it was too bad and if we really wanted to we could have just used the free puke bags and bathroom on the boat), it's not all been positive. And we prefer showing the more positive side of humanity here.

But there were definitely positive experiences with locals. Like the $1 ice cream woman who whenever we could we visited, the owners and cleaners of all of the places we stayed who were fantastic, and our favorite restaurant owner of our favorite pizza place. He even got a photo of us because he saw us taking so many photos of our delicious pizza ????. We went back again to get pizza and a selfie with him but he sadly wasn't there haha.

To have your place overrun by tourists who show up expecting more than you want to give is an awful reality a lot of people face here. But to everyone on the Galapagos Islands who have been great - thank you for having us.

What to see on Santa Cruz Island in Galápagos & Galápagos Island hopping tours

If you're considering booking a boat cruise in the Galápagos Islands, you will start & end your trip on the island of Santa Cruz. We recommend planning to stay on Santa Cruz Island for at least a few days, so you can relax after your action packed boat cruise adventure, and explore & enjoy the island before you have to get on a plane to travel home. Or if you have dreamed of visiting Galápagos, but you're not sure if a liveaboard boat cruise is right for you, you can consider Galápagos land based tours, or island hopping tours, where you can visit one island, or several islands to experience the people, culture & wildlife while supporting the local economy.

On Santa Cruz Island for example, you can;
*Visit the world famous Darwin Research Station to learn about this history of the islands, and see giant tortoises (including many baby tortoises!)
*Visit the many beautiful beaches where you can walk, swim, snorkel or kayak to see the incredible wildlife - including the world famous Tortuga Bay Beach
*Go on hikes or ride bicycles to explore the island & its wildlife (some hiking sites require guides)
*Visit local farms & learn about local ecosystems
*Explore the charming town & waterfront harbour - where you can see sea lions, a variety of birds, sharks & golden rays
*See the local fisherman's market, & eat delicious fresh seafood at local restaurants
*Talk to locals to learn more about the people who support the cruise industry, and what it's like to live in the islands

You can also visit San Cristobal, Isabela & Floreana Islands. There is so much to see and do!
