Latvia - Cēsis, medieval town
Cēsis was first mentioned in documents in 1206, and its castle dates from 1207. It was once a prosperous town of the Hanseatic League, as evidenced in its fine architecture, including the Church of St. John (1283). The old town is now preserved by government decree. After a long period of decline, Cēsis began to grow again in the last century after the construction of the Riga-Valka railway.

Starting that the Aizpute Tourism Information Centre, we will begin our excursion and exploring the town of Priekule and its many historical structures and sights with the many pictures of Priekule.
If you have decided to travel around Latvia, do not forget to visit Priekule and Priekule Region in the very southwest of Latvia where the borderline with the Republic of Lithuania goes. In Priekules Region you will meet many warm-hearted and creative people, who still honor Ikars of Priekule, a manor blacksmith, who by landing from the church tower with his self-made wings proved to the world that a man can fly like birds. The legend about Ikars of Priekule is still alive today, it is reflected in the emblem of the region, and in honor of this legend each year on the second Saturday of August we are celebrating the biggest festival in the region. We suggest you to begin your journey across the Priekule Region from Priekule, the Swedish gate Zviedru vārti a very symbolic place where seven roads have crossed since ancient times. In the renovated Lutheran church you can get to know the history of Priekule, listen to the sounds of the organ and see Priekule's surroundings through the windows of the church tower. In Priekule Parish, we encourage you to commemorate World War II by visiting the Memorial of Warrior's Cemetery and reading the death-rolls of killed soldiers. But from the viewpoints of the nature reserve park in Ruņupe valley you can find similarities with the most beautiful places in Latvia.

Ķūķu klintis ir augstākais devona iežu atsegums Latvijā - 43m. Augšējo daļu - virs smilšakmeņiem - veido māla slāņi, kas satur daudz pārakmeņotu organismu atlieku. Ķūķu klintis strauji maina savu izskatu upes erozijas un daudzo noslīdeņu dēļ. Dažu gadu laikā krasts atkāpies pat par 10m!
Klintis savu nosaukumu ieguvušas no tuvējām Ķūķu mājām. Ķūķu putra jeb ķūķis bija tradicionālais latviešu ēdiens ziemas saulgriežos. Līdzās klintīm ir vairākpakāpju krāces, un to dēļ senatnē plostnieki majestātiskās klintis dēvējuši par Straujajiem iežiem.
Klinšu vidusdaļā ir savdabīga ala - Ķūķu ala, kas izveidojusies smilšakmeņos pie paša ūdens un kura pieejama tikai mazūdens periodā. Ķūķu alas priekšā ziemā veidojas leduskritums.
Ķūķu klintis ir aizsargājams ģeoloģisks dabas piemineklis, atrodas Gaujas Nacionālajā parkā. Alas nav paredzētas apmeklēt.

Скала Тютю является самым высоким выходом на поверхность девонских пород в Латвии – 43 м. Верхнюю часть – над песчанником – образовывают глинистые слои, которые содержат много окаменелых останков организмов. Из-за речной эрозии и многих обвалов Скала Тютю резко меняет свой внешний вид. За несколько лет берег отступил на 10 м!
Своё название скала получила благодаря находившемуся вблизи дому «Тютю». Каша тютю или тютис была национальным латышским блюдом, подаваемым во время зимнего солнцестояния. Около скалы находятся многоступенчатые пороги, поэтому в старину сплавщики величественную скалу называли утёс Страуяйс (быстрый).
В средней части скалы находится необычная пещера – пещера Тютю , которая образовалась в песчаннике около самой воды, поэтому она доступна только во время малой воды. Зимой перед пещерой образовывается ледопад (ледяной водопад).
Скала Тютю находится в Гауйском Национальном парке и является охраняемым геологическим памятником природы,. Пещера не предназначена для посещения, осмотр только снаружи.

Ķuķu Cliff is the highest outcrop of the Devonian period in Latvia at 43 metres in height. The upper part (above the sandstones) is formed from clay layers that contain a lot of fossil remains of long dead organisms. Ķūku Cliff changes its appearance rapidly due to river erosion and many landslides. In recent years the shore has lost 10 metres!
The cliff got its name thanks to the house of Ķuķu situated nearby; Ķūķu porridge or ķūķis was a national Latvian dish during the winter solstice. There are multistage thresholds near to the cliff, so in the olden times raftsmen called this majestic cliff the Straujās Cliff (Fast Cliff).
In the middle part of the cliff is the unusual cave Ķūķu, which was formed in the sandstone just next to the water, so it is reachable only during periods of low water. In the winter the icefall forms in front the cave.
Ķūķu Cliff is a natural geological monument and is located in the Gauja National Park. The cave is not intended for visiting, and therefore can be seen only from the outside.
