Visiting Naples - Italy: from Attractions to Foodies, a Tour in the City (10 Best Trip Tips - 4K)

If you are planning to visit Naples, in Campania region - Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, looking at the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Naples!
Three enormous castles, a royal palace, cathedrals, a city center which is a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to 470 BC, and incredible food!

In this video I’ll show you the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including: Piazza del plebiscite, Royal palace, Umberto I Gallery, San Carlo Theatre, the Promenade, Castel dell’Ovo, Naples underground, Maschio Angioino, the Cloister of Santa Chiara, Castel Sant’Elmo, San Martino Terrace, Posillipo.

So, what are ten possible attractions that I would suggest to a foreign friend who wants to visit Naples?

Piazza del Plebiscito and Palazzo Reale
Piazza del Plebiscito has always been the symbol of Naples. Opposite you will find the Royal Palace. That’s why the square is one of the most elegant spots in Naples.

Galleria Umberto I and Teatro San Carlo
Nearby you will find the Umberto I Gallery. Stendhal said There is nothing in all of Europe, that comes close to this theatre. In addition, the San Carlo theatre is the oldest still active theater in Europe. A sacred place of Italian opera!

Lungomare and Castel dell’Ovo
The seafront of Naples is one of the most fascinating landscapes of the city, overlooking all the Gulf. The walk passes through Castel dell'Ovo, the oldest castle in Naples.

Napoli Sotterranea
In “Napoli sotterranea”, or Naples underground, you will discover the Greek and Roman influences, and you will be able to relive the tragic days of the Second World War.

Maschio Angioino
The Maschio Angioino castle is the icon of historic Naples, and one of the main attractions of the city. It is an ancient castle built in medieval style and renovated in Renaissance style.

Chiostro di Santa Chiara
A gem to visit is the cloister of Santa Chiara: two paths with pillars covered with majolica representing scenes taken from the daily life of the time. A place that gives you so much serenity!

Castel Sant’Elmo e il Belvedere di San Martino
The highest point of Naples’ hills is Castel Sant'Elmo, from where you can see almost every point in the city. Once here, go to the Belvedere of San Martino, the most romantic terrace in Naples.

Spaccanapoli
Spaccanapoli is the heart of the old city. Translated literally, Spaccanapoli means Naples splitter, as the long, straight thoroughfare seems to divide the historic centre of the city in two: the walk starts from the Spanish Quarters and ends in Forcella.

Cappella Sansevero e Cristo Velato
The “Cristo Velato”, Veiled Christ, by Giuseppe Sammartino, according to many art critics is the most beautiful sculpture ever made, located inside the Sansevero Chapel, behind Piazza San Domenico Maggiore.

Duomo
Naples Cathedral is the fusion of different architectural styles - from Gothic to Baroque to Neo-Gothic, an enormous amount of frescoes, sculptures and much more to see here, and entrance is free!

Lungomare e Posillipo
Along the seafront to the west, you will arrive in Posillipo, a haven of tranquility and excellent restaurants where you can eat fish.

Let's Visit Pozzuoli, Italy

Pozzuoli is a charming town on The Bay of Naples. It was founded by the Greeks, and has remained an important fishing center for centuries. There are many Roman ruins located here with a colossal arena.

Pozzuoli, Italy Walking Tour

This walking tour of Pozzuoli, Italy was filmed on September 30th, 2017. Pozzuoli is a modern city with an ancient past. It was founded by the Greeks in 529 BC and then taken over by the Romans in 194 BC who renamed it Puteoli (Pozzuoli). Pozzuoli is full of ancient ruins, fish markets and cafes although it probably most well known for having given the world the Italian diva, Sophia Loren. If you enjoyed this video and would like to support my channel, please consider making a financial donation using the given link. Thank you!

In this walk you will see:
- the port with local fisherman selling their daily catch right off their boats to customers on the pier.
- the most ancient part of Pozzuoli called Rione Terra, a hill top district that has been continuously inhabited for the last 2,500 years.
- the Pozzuoli waterfront boardwalk
*CORRECTION: at 23:00 I make a reference to Monte Nuovo but unfortunately I put the call-out title on the wrong mountain. Monte Nuovo is the much smaller mountain to the left covered in vegetation.

Places to see in ( Pozzuoli - Italy ) Flavian Amphitheater

Places to see in ( Pozzuoli - Italy ) Flavian Amphitheater

The Flavian Amphitheater, located in Pozzuoli, is the third largest Roman amphitheater in Italy. Only the Roman Colosseum and the Capuan Amphitheater are larger. It was likely built by the same architects who previously constructed the Roman Colosseum. The name Flavian Amphitheater is primarily associated with the Roman Colosseum.

It was begun under the reign of the emperor Vespasian and probably finished under the reign of his son Titus. The arena can hold up to 50,000 spectators. The interior is mostly intact and one can still see parts of gears which were used to lift cages up to the arena floor. In 305, the arena was the setting for the persecutions of the patron of Pozzuoli, Saint Proculus, and the patron saint of Naples, Saint Januarius. After surviving being thrown to the wild beasts in the arena, the two were beheaded at the nearby Solfatara.

The elliptical structure measures 147 x 117 meters (482 x 384 feet), with the arena floor measuring 72.22 x 42.33 meters (237 x 139 feet). The Flavian Amphitheater is the second of two Roman amphitheaters built in Pozzuoli. The smaller and older amphitheater (Anfiteatro minore) has been almost totally destroyed by the construction of the Rome to Naples railway line. Only a dozen arches of this earlier work still exist. This lesser amphitheater measured 130 x 95 meters (427 x 312 feet).

The site of the structure was chosen at the nearby crossing of roads from Naples, Capua and Cumae. It was abandoned when it was partially buried by eruptions from the Solfatara volcano. During the Middle Ages, the marble used on the exterior was stripped, but the interior was left alone and is perfectly preserved. Excavations of the site were performed 1839 to 1845, 1880 to 1882, and finally in 1947.

Places to see in ( Pozzuoli - Italy ) Lago d'Averno

Lake Avernus is a volcanic crater lake located in the Avernus crater in the Campania region of southern Italy, around 4 km west of Pozzuoli. It is near the volcanic field known as the Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei) and comprises part of the wider Campanian volcanic arc. The lake is roughly circular, measuring 2 km (1.2 mi) in circumference and 60 m (213 ft) deep.

Avernus was of major importance to the Romans, who considered it to be the entrance to Hades. Roman writers often used the name as a synonym for the underworld. In Virgil's Aeneid, Aeneas descends to the underworld through a cave near the lake. In Hyginus' Fabulae, Odysseus also goes to the lower world from this spot, where he meets Elpenor, his comrade who went missing at Circe's place.

Despite the alleged dangers of the lake, the Romans were happy to settle its shores, on which villas and vineyards were established. The lake's personification, the deus Avernus, was worshiped in lakeside temples. A large bathhouse was built on the eastern shore of the lake.

In 37 BC, the Roman general Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa converted the lake into a naval base named the Portus Julius after Julius Caesar. It was linked by a canal to a nearby lake (Lucrinus Lacus) and, from there, to the sea. The lake shore was also connected to the Greek colony of Cumae by an underground passage known as Cocceio's Cave (Grotta di Cocceio), which was 1 km (0.62 mi) long and wide enough to be used by chariots. This was the world's first major road tunnel; it remained usable until as recently as the 1940s.

The Borboni, the Naples-ruling members of the House of Bourbon, owned the lake until 1750 when they ceded it to another aristocratic family, who in turn sold it, in 1991, to the Cardillo family. In 2010, a 55-hectare (0.55 km2) tract of land – including the lake, a lakefront restaurant, B&B and disco – was seized by the police after the owner was accused of being a mafia frontman (for the Casalesi). In the pre-modern era, Italian geographers also called Lago Averno, the: Lago di Tripergola. It was named after the nearby village of Tripergola, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1538.

City in Italy

Pozzuoli is a city and comune of the Metropolitan City of Naples, in the Italian region of Campania. It is the main city of the Phlegrean Peninsula.

The Macellum of Pozzuoli, also known as the Temple of Serapis or serapeum, is considered the city's symbol. The temple was actually a marketplace. Its name derives from the misinterpretation of its function after a statue of the god Serapis was found in 1750 at this location. The Macellum includes three majestic columns in Cipollino marble, which show erosion from marine Lithophaga molluscs when, at an earlier time, the ground level was much lower due to Bradyseism, and sea-water could flow in.

Roman Amphitheater in Pozzuoli, Italy - Walking Tour - 4K

Take a walk through the underground passageways and over the arena floor of the Flavian Amphitheater in Pozzuoli, Italy. It is the third largest amphitheater in Italy, behind the Roman Colosseum and the Amphitheater in Capua. When it was excavated in the 19th century, archaeologists discovered that much of the Flavian Amphitheater's structure was still intact and it's underground extremely well preserved. This is due to being partially buried by ash and rubble from the eruption of the nearby Solfatara volcano. Pozzuoli is a small town west of Naples. It was once the main port for the Roman Empire. The apostle Paul landed there on his way up to Rome which is about 150 miles away. It is now famous for being the home town of Sophia Loren who's childhood home is right next to the Amphitheater.
