Dublin to Cork | Irish Rail's flagship service in 1st Class | It's blue, but is it any good?

I've been to Ireland, riding their trains before, but I've never had the chance to ride on the flagship hourly service that runs between Dublin and Cork.

Facts
Ireland is known for its wide expanses of lush, green fields. In fact, its nickname is the Emerald Isle.
But there are also large areas of rugged, rocky landscape. About 15,000 years ago,
Ireland was completely covered by thick glaciers.
The movement of these giant sheets of ice stripped the soil,
leaving huge tracts of flat, limestone pavement.

PEOPLE & CULTURE
Ireland is a nation of storytellers.
The tradition dates back to Celtic bards,
who would record and recite the country's history.
Many famed writers come from Ireland, including four winners of the Nobel Prize for literature.
The Irish also excel in music and sports.

NATURE
The Irish have a great affection for nature and rural life.
The country's first coins even featured pictures of animals.
Low levels of development and pollution in Ireland have left most of the nation's open spaces relatively undisturbed.
Did you know that there are no wild snakes in Ireland?
The sea has stopped many animals common on mainland Europe from reaching the island.
There are also only two wild mouse species, one type of lizard, and just three kinds of amphibians.
Irish wildlife is protected by government conservation programs.
To preserve natural habitat,
the government has established six national parks and hundreds of national heritage areas throughout the country.

DINGLE: OUR FAVOURITE TOWN SO FAR - IRELAND ROAD TRIP

Next on our Ireland road trip, we visit the Dingle Peninsula and take you with us on a drive along the beautiful Slea Head loop. The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the most stunning coasts we've ever seen during our travels! We had some great weather and were able to see as far as the Skellig and Blasket islands which we couldn't see on our first drive because of the fog. We didn't cover all of the Dingle Peninsula but the town is so cute and we enjoyed a beer at Dick Mack's pub before making our way to make new friends in Limerick.

There Are Two Ways To Get To Limerick - Episode 10, 2nd April - Dublin to Limerick

In an unusual start to the day, Geoff and Vicki visit the Irish Railway Record Society in the morning, before hopping on their first train in the afternoon. Then it's off up to Ballybrophy and on to Limerick, chatting with the people along the way.

Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: (other stores are available...)

Vicki and Geoff are travelling to 198 railway stations in Ireland and Northern Ireland!

All The Stations - Ireland sees the duo exploring the length and breadth of the Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways networks. Along the way, they'll meet the communities connected to the lines, interview local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.

To The Book! The Railway Adventures is published by September Publishing and was released in October 2018. It accompanies the 2017 'All The Stations' adventure, when we travelled to all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain. Available here:

You can see a progress map and station count on the website:

Irish Rail InterCity from Dublin to Galway - from East to West Ireland by train

I know little of the country of Ireland or their train services, so I thought I would remedy that as best as I could in just three days!

After arriving at lunchtime into Dublin from Holyhead on the ferry, my first journey inside Ireland was a quick hop from East to West on Irish Rail's InterCity service from Dublin to Galway. What is Heuston station like in Dublin? Are the Korean DMUs they use in Ireland any good? What's the countryside like between Dublin and Galway? I didn't know, but I was keen to find out.

Departure: Dublin Heuston, Ireland
Destination: Galway Ceannt, Ireland
Distance: 203 km / 126 miles
Duration: 2 hrs 24 mins
Cost: Advance adult flexi single €15,99 / £13.40
Date of Travel: September 2022
Operator: Irish Rail / Iarnród Éireann
Motive power: Class 22000 diesel multiple unit. (Hyundai Rotem, S Korea 2007-2012)
