In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 3 | Exploring Estremoz, Elvas, Mouchão & Marvão | Travel in Portugal
Alentejo in Portugal is a spectacularly vast region that urges anyone with a love for bucolic sceneries and dramatic landscapes to come back over and over again. This time, we headed to Alto Alentejo, this Portuguese hinterland that shares a border with Spain, exploring the deeply historic Estremoz, the garrison town of Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its mighty twin fortresses, and climbed the Serra de São Mamede (on the mountainous district of Portalegre) for the grand finale that is the ancient hilltop town of Marvão.
In between, we encountered two wonderful surprises -- a stay in Monte da Provença, this idyllic and rural farmhouse hotel just outside Elvas, and finally, a visit in Herdade do Mouchão, one of the oldest vineyards in Alentejo, with their heritage Alicante Bouschet wines that have surpassed renown.

Would you live in a castle? Many people dream of living in a medieval castle, with its centuries-old architecture and sweeping views of the countryside. But living in such an ancient structure comes with its own set of challenges.
With its thick stone walls and drafty windows, living in a castle can be quite cold. You may think that it's a dream come true living in a castle, but there are definitely drawbacks.
In our opinion, Marvão Castle is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved castles in all of Portugal. Perched on top of a steep hill, the views from its ramparts are simply stunning.
Despite its age and lack of modern amenities, we believe living in Marvão Castle would be an amazing experience. It has plenty of space for living and working, as well as lots of potential for restoration. Its historic charm is truly unmatched and if only the weather was great all year round we would live here for sure.

Mosteiro Flor da Rosa | Crato | Portalegre
Estamos a 2km a norte da Vila do Crato, junto do Mosteiro da flor da Rosa. Ele fascínina-nos pela sua monumentalidade que resulta da história da sua construção.
Ele compõe-se de 3 edificações distintas que se interpenetraram ao longo do tempo:
1. Paço acastelado gótico com alterações no séc. XVI
2. Igreja-fortaleza gótica, de nave única de grande altura
3. dependências conventuais gótico - mudejares.
De início, segundo os vestígios arqueológicos, a Flor da Rosa parece ter sido, um quadrado defensivo, uma composição de muralhas com uma torre avançada a norte e outra torre, eventualmente, a sul......ou seja....uma fortaleza, provavelmente inspirada na arquitetura militar da Terra Santa, promovida pelos Hospitalários.
Somente a partir de 1341, houve a intenção de atualizar a fortaleza pré-existente com a construção de torres defensivas que servissem, simultaneamente, de paço-forte da ordem, que elegera a Flor da Rosa como sua sede.
Pouco depois, certamente a partir de 1356 quando se oficializa a sede, é decidida a construção de uma igreja de grandes dimensões.
O que me parece curioso são as proporções usadas nesta igreja;
1. O transepto e a Nave parecem ter a mesma dimensão
2. Embora a nave e transepto tenham as mesmas dimensões...o transepto cruza a nave em posição de cruz latina
3. A altura excessiva da igreja (mais de 2x a sua largura) para uma planta de nave única. Dá a impressão que o transepto aproveitou uma das torres sul da fortificação primitiva

Nisa é uma vila raiana portuguesa no distrito de Portalegre, na região do Alentejo. Este município fica sul do rio Tejo e faz fronteira com Espanha.
Neste video vou vos mostrar os principais pontos a visitar no centro histórico da actual vila de Nisa, e outros relacionados com a anterior povoação. O centro histórico fica dentro de uma muralha medieval, que está quase intacta, embora seja apenas visivel do ar. Tem duas das suas portas com torres.
