The travel guide to the MASCARENE ISLANDS!
Our destination is the island of Rodrigues, in the Mascarene archipelago, a volcanic folly that is only 109 square kilometres surrounded by an uncontaminated coral reef. We visit the island and discover its’ beauty on land, underground and also underwater. In the Francois Leguat protected reserve we are privileged to see hundreds of Tortoises, a varying ages and sizes, as they mate undisturbed by our presence and our cameras.
A local guide takes us to discover a system of caves that develops 18 metres below sea level. But it is the population of Rodrigues that surprises us the most: a people who have not adopted different ways or customs, but that live their lives proudly with the knowledge that they are fortunate to have been born in such an island paradise both on land and sea.

The MAURITIUS food you have to try | Delicious street food
Let's discover some of the Mauritius food you have to try when visiting the island. A convenient way to sample many of the popular street foods of Mauritius (and learn about its history) is through a food tour of Port Louis. We had a great experince with Taste Buddies, a local company that runs 3 -hour food tours both in Port Louis and in the South of the island. Of course, you can also have a DIY Mauritius street food tour, using the shops we visited as guidance. Everything we tried was delicious, the dholl puri being our favorite!

Rodrigues island, Mauritius: The Top Adventures on Rodrigues Island Mauritius
Rodrigues Island, a small island in the Indian Ocean, may be off the beaten track, but there are plenty of things to keep the adrenaline junky happy. Hop on a motorcycle and take a tour out of Port Mathurin after exploring the local markets, and drive around the island to experience the sights and sounds! Take kitesurfing lessons where Lesson 1 is how to control the kite, and lesson 2 is to see how much salt water you can drink. Walk with the giant tortoises at Francois Leguat Tortoise Reserve. Try the zip line or bungy jump at the Tyrolieene Suspension bridge. Or just sit back and watch the kite surfers , eat some scrumptious creole dishes, and watch a traditional dance performance complete with traditional Rodrigues accordion music at the Morouk Ebony Hotel or Cotton Bay Hotel. There are hiking trails all over the island and caves to explore too! This island has something for everyone, and it was one of our most favorite stops in the entire Indian Ocean aboard our sailboat Brick House

The Mourouk Ebony Hotel must have the best place on the planet to learn kitesurfing, and some of the best creole food we had on Rodrigues Island. The buffet dinner and traditional music and dancing performance only happens a few times a week so be sure to ask. This is also the location of the International Kitesurfing Festival each year. The Francois Leguat Tortoise Reserve and surrounding caves were on the pricey side, but a must see to visit while you are there. You hike through trails accompanied with a guide who shows you all of the plants and animals of Rodrigues. For a few dollars extra you can visit some cave systems. Lunch is additional but quite tasty here. The website is here:

Rodrigues, Mauritius Tours
Rodrigues, Mauritius Tours - Rodrigues, sometimes spelled Rodriguez but named after the Portuguese explorer Diogo Rodrigues, is the smallest of the Mascarene Islands and a dependency of Mauritius. With a peak elevation of approximately 355 meters (1165 ft), it is located 560 km (348 mi) east of Mauritius island, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It is 109 km² (43 sq mi) in size, and surrounded by a coral reef. The capital of the island is Port Mathurin.
As of 2006, the islands population was about 40,000. The main language is Rodriguan Creole, while French and English are spoken or understood by some of the inhabitants. The main religion is Roman Catholicism with a small minorities of other religions. Most of the inhabitants are of mixed African and French descent. On y trouve les légumes, les brèdes, les grains secs , les zourires séchés, les fruits mais aussi tous les produits de l'artisanat local tels les vanneries,le miel rodriguais, les confitures et confits divers.
On peut boire un lemon ou une bonne eau bien fraîche de coco
ou manger une dohl pury. Comme tous les marchés l'ambiance est bruyante , animée et trés colorée
