Siena, in the heart of Tuscany, is one of Italy's most popular destinations, a great medieval landmark to explore.
It's both a historic site and a vibrant modern city with excellent shopping, many fine restaurants, and beautiful pedestrian lanes throughout town.
We'll show you the busy main streets, always active with lots of people, and take you to those out-of-the-way little lanes, into the quiet residential neighborhoods.
The main piazza, called il Campo, and the Cathedral, called the Duomo, are two of the most important attractions that we will explore in detail.
Siena is so well-preserved that UNESCO has designated the entire old town as a World Heritage Site, not just one building or neighborhood, but all of the old town.
UNESCO describes Siena as an outstanding medieval city that has preserved its character and quality to a remarkable degree. It's a rare example of a medieval historic town of this size. The original urban form of the city, with its 15th century street plan, has been retained along with the Gothic design of its public buildings, palaces and tower houses, which remain unchanged.
Siena is a very livable city. It's built to a human scale, covering about a square kilometer, which makes it small enough that you can easily walk from one end of town to the other in a single day and see almost all of the sites in between. There's an endless variety of interesting things to see along your way.
Siena is a small city, but crisscrossed by dozens of little lanes that provide many miles of picturesque strolling opportunities for the ambitious trekker.
Siena is divided in three districts corresponding to the three ridges it sits on, North, West and East, with the Campo in the middle, the main piazza.
3:01 Main Lane
At the north end of the main shopping lane, via Banchi di Sopra, there is a pretty little square, Piazza Salimbeni, with Europe's oldest bank founded in 1472. This main shopping street is worth walking from one end to the other, perhaps stopping for a bite at one of the attractive little restaurants along the way. And narrow side alleys will attract you with their charms.
Escape the crowds by ducking into the side alleys, as we will be showing you here.
5:32
In the middle of it all is the Campo, the great piazza of Siena. Nearly 500 feet wide and surrounded by shops, restaurants, and the towering Palazzo Publico, this is the very heart of town. It's a great place to have an outdoor meal at one of the many sidewalk restaurants that are around it. You will find the experience of eating an evening meal at twilight, sunset on the Campo, is going to be one of the highlights of your trip,
12:30
Now let's take a walk in all those little back streets of town that are so wonderful, starting on the lower west side.
You'll find that when you get off the beaten track, these little lanes are a lot more interesting. Get away from other tourists and you'll start to feel like a local.
We're going to take you walking off the grid, further away from the tourist areas, further away from views and landmarks and famous churches, and just into this lovely, peaceful, residential neighborhood. There are a few shops, there are certainly always restaurants and cafés, mostly catering to the locals who live nearby.
17:02
We continue through the little side lanes and down to the Piazza Mercato. This place was the ancient market square which still today has an outdoor produce market several times a week. This Mercato is a lovely nook of the city, just two blocks south of the Campo, the main busy square, and yet 95% of the visitors never get here.
20:47
We continue walking on other nearby lanes, especially Gilio and Rossi, and various alleys that will lead us there and take us around.
For those travelers who love to get away from the shops and stroll through quiet residential alleys, Siena offers many more possibilities.
These little byways are your gateway to enter the authentic side of Siena.
22:48 The Duomo Cathedral
The great cathedral of Siena is the Duomo, just a few minutes’ walk from the Campo. It is one of the world's most beautiful and intriguing churches. It's a must-see on your visit, loaded with astonishing architecture, sculpture and paintings. More than just a religious structure of the Duomo is the economic symbol of wealth, international trade and cultural influences.
27:47 How to reach Siena
Getting from Florence to Siena is very convenient by taking the SITA bus. Their bus station is right in the heart of Florence, across the street from the main Florence train station.

Top 10 Restaurants to Visit in Pontassieve, Province of Florence | Tuscany - English

Pontassieve is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Florence in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 14 kilometres (9 mi) east of Florence, nearby Fiesole, at the confluence of the Arno and Sieve rivers.

== History ==
The first rulers of the area were the Quona nobles, whose Lordship is documented from the 11th century. These, a branch of whom at a later date also appeared under the name of Filicaia, settled in Florence at the end of the 12th century and in 1207 sold a large part of its territory of jurisdiction to the Bishopric of Florence.
In 1375 Florence had a castle erected here for an essentially strategic use on the land of Pontassieve. First the town took the name of Castel Sant’Angelo (Saint Angel Castle), later obtaining the current referring to the import

INSIDE THE TUSCAN HILLS - Episode 5 - Rufina & Pontassieve

I created this series with Camille Rustige Abbe, who hosted and co-produced it with me.
It aired on PBS in 2004 and also aired on the Italian TV station Mediaset (that's called selling coal to Newcastle!)
It was my first job in TV - I shot, directed and edited the whole kit and caboodle. I actually haven't re-watched it in years and I am sure I would cringe at a lot of it...but that's ok, you gotta start somewhere!
Particularly cringey is the boom-pole in the upper left of the show's stand-up opening. It wasn't in the TV broadcast, but somehow made it onto the DVD version.

Numerous houses were built around the fortress, surrounded and protected by mighty walls.
Due to its strategic importance, as a railway and road junction, Pontassieve suffered heavy bombing during the Second World War.

San Gimignano Italy - City of Beautiful Towers

San Gimignano, a small walled village about halfway between Florence and Siena, is famous for its fascinating medieval architecture and towers that rise above of all the other buildings offering an impressive view of the city from the surrounding valley.

At the height of its glory, San Gimignano's patrician families had built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990, San Gimignano offers visitors the chance to step back in time while enjoying its local products including saffron and its white wine, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

#sangimignano #sangimignanoitaly #italy

Duomo of San Gimignano
No matter how short your visit in San Gimignano might be, you must visit the cathedral to admire the marvelous cycle of frescoes that recount stories from the New and Old Testaments painted by illustrious artists of the 14th-century Sienese school and the extraordinary Renaissance jewel, the Chapel of Santa Fina. Then head to the Museum of Sacred Art next door to admire the exquisite Madonna of the Rose.

Civic Museums in San Gimignano
Must-sees during your visit to San Gimignano are the Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca and Torre Grossa, the tallest tower in the city from which you can enjoy a unique 360° view over all of San Gimignano. If you have time, also visit the Archeological Museum where the second floor houses the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery, a mix of the ancient past and more relatively recent past.

San Gimignano, known as the city of beautiful towers, had 72 towers in its heyday. Now 14 remain, and, rising above Tuscany's Elsa Valley, they make the town look like a medieval dreamscape. Take in the fresco-covered Collegiate Church, the Civic Museum and the views from atop 177-foot Torre Grossa. Daytrippers from Florence tend to fill up the streets during the day, so for a more up-close-and-personal look at the town, spend the night.

Visitors are universally spellbound when they discover San Gimignano. The reason for this lays in the well-preserved feudal atmosphere and appearance from the Middle Ages with its architectural integrity and original intact urban layout . The towers capture the way wealth and power were displayed through dramatic public and private monuments.

The towers of San Gimignano were not just displays of wealth, they also represented the power of the families who built them. The taller the tower, the more important the owners appeared to be. This would lead to conflicts and often families would feud for decades and split the loyalties of the citizens. Legends tell stories of young lovers from quarrelling families who would meet in secret, in the shadows of the towers, like real-life Romeos and Juliets.

San Gimignano is easy to spot from a distance, and simply breathtaking once you enter the walls. Medieval ramparts rise from the surrounding green Tuscan farmland and provide first-time visitors with unforgettable views. Once inside, the town is easy to navigate with narrow streets leading to large squares with grand churches and palaces, and, of course, the towers—of which, 13 remain. After walking around the hamlet and climbing tower stairs, the museum explains the history and local shops offer guests local products like saffron and the region's famed white wine: the Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

San Gimignano's international reputation it not just about its architectural uniqueness. The richness and beauty of the countryside, and its precious products, are unsurpassed. The celebrated Vernaccia white wine, for instance, is produced exclusively in the area.

At the end of the 13th century, this marvellous white wine appeared throughout Europe on the tables of kings, popes, and wealthy merchants. Writers like Dante Alighieri and Boccaccio mentioned Vernaccia wine in their poems. In 1993, Vernaccia was the first white wine in Tuscany to receive DOCG certification.

ABOUT:

Hi! I’m Valeria and I’m an expat in Italy. I’ve moved here (almost) on a whim when my plans in Paris got ruined - without speaking the language and totally unprepared, but pretty sure this is gonna be an adventure of a lifetime! Moving to Italy has definitely had its ups and downs, but I love discovering Italian culture, Italian people and, of course, Italian food. Here I post regular travel vlogs, tips on expat life, moving to Italy, personal growth and self-esteem as an expat woman living abroad.

If you enjoyed this video, please don't forget to like and subscribe for more! Also, let's get to know each other: tell me in the comments where in the world are you at the moment!

Thank you for being here and may you have a wonderful day!
