On the final night we’ll be sleeping under the stars, in a big clear bubble, among a community of beautiful rescue elephants—at one of the top eco resorts on the planet.
The entire experience is another illustration of augmenting our kids’ online schooling with real-world interactions, but it’s particularly special because elephants have always been Brooklyn’s favorite animal. Like, since she was a baby. So we’re excited to see how her first actual encounter affects her appreciation for these incredible creatures.

Snow Monkey Park is a park located in Nagano, Japan for observing wild Japanese monkeys. It is a tourist spot, known for its wild monkeys soaking in hot springs in winter????♨️
We stayed at a hot spring inn called Jigokudani Korakukan, which is the closest to Snow Monkey Park. The ryokan has open-air baths, and wild monkeys also come, so if you're lucky, you can bathe together! It is a very nice ryokan with a long history and a family atmosphere. I was very moved when I took a bath with a monkey. I have never seen monkeys so close!
Snow monkeys are famous, but not many people know that there are hot springs where you can bathe with wild monkeys. At Korakukan, you can enjoy the hot springs without staying overnight until 3:00 pm, so be sure to check it out. Don't forget your swimsuit!

Cultural Refresher: Books & Movies to Rouse Your Thailand Mojo [S5.E20]
On a suggestion from listener Emily, Greg and Ed go back to basics with book and movie recommendations for people new to Thailand and Southeast Asia, or old-timers looking to refresh their knowledge after being disconnected during all this covid hullabaloo. Ed begins with three foundational books: the all-time classic ‘Lonely Planet Thailand,’ written by friend of the podcast Joe Cummings, the insightful (if a bit outdated) ‘Culture Shock: Thailand,’ and the super creative ‘Very Thai,’ by Phillip Cornwall-Smith (not to mention his followup ‘Very Bangkok’). Greg follows with his own key recommendations, including ‘The Thai Book’ by Ron Morris and ‘A History of Thailand’ by Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit. Ed concurs and also puts a word in for ‘Thailand: A Short History,’ by David K. Wyatt.
Turning to movies, Ed notes that all foreigners interested in Thai culture should see the ghost film ‘Nang Nak,’ which relates possibly the most popular story in all of Thai pop culture. For some history perspective, Francis Ford Coppola’s cut of ‘Suriyothai’ is a good place to start, but seeing some version of the famous (partly fictional) story ‘The King and I’ is probably a good idea. To appreciate the Thai fascination with animism and experience Thailand’s most accredited filmmaker, check out ‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall HIs Past Lives’, by the filmmaker whose name only Greg can pronounce (that’d be Apichatpong Weerasethakul).
In closing, the guys make a few final suggestions. To learn about the man who has shaped modern Thai politics (for better or worse), read ‘Thaksin’ by Chris Baker, or grab ‘Anand Panyarachun and the Making of Modern Thailand’ by Dominic Faulder for a look at another legendary figure. Greg concludes by suggesting the under-appreciated film ‘City of Ghosts’ with Matt Dillon, a crime thriller set in Cambodia and Thailand.
These recommendations likely won’t shock anyone, but you gotta start somewhere, and this is it.

Best Hot Springs Swimming in North Thailand | Thailand Vlogs
Tha Pai Hot Spring or Pong Nam Ron Thapai is a part of Huai Nam Dang National Park, in Mae Hong Son province in North Thailand. Tha Pai hot spring is found close to Pai district town, 8 kilometers south of Pai. At Tha Pai hot springs, the water has an average temperature of 80 degrees Celsius, and offers an excellent view especially in the morning, when the mellow sun creates a rich tapestry of shadows as it shines through the steams issuing from the hot spring. There are several pools of different heat levels, being each one less hot than the previous one.
This place has pools that are a foot and a half deep, and you can easily immerse yourself and relax in the pools after a cold journey through the mountain roads. The serene jungles, with their birds in colorful plumage, offer you an ideal backdrop for a day’s relaxation under the sun. The stones inside the hot springs are quite slippery, so it is really good to wear shoes in the water.
Nice dip in the hot springs, would recommend to go higher up, water is warmer and also there are fewer people which feels a bit cleaner as not as many people dipping their feet in the water.
Visitors enjoy making boiled eggs with hot spring. Please read the signs, if you are boiling eggs; one of the pools feeds the houses of local villagers.
There is a toillet, shower and restaurant inside the complex, so you don’t need to worry about hygiene, drinks or food.
Tha Pai hot spring is also rich in teak wood and is suitable for overnight camping.

Visit North Thailand: Pong Duat/Dueat Hot Springs & Geyser.mov
The Pong Duat or Dueat or Duad Hot Springs (all the different spelling drove me crazy), located 37 kilometers/20 miles off the highway, is one of the scenic high points on the Mae Hong Son loop and was packed with tourists; either returning to Chiang Mai or heading to Pai, a popular destination for Thais. Entrance fee is 200 Bahts.
Accessed by a boardwalk with many steps up and down, it leads through the area's hot springs and geysers. Pong Duat has scattered hot springs in a heavily forested area which create small brooks with hot water and steam. We walked 550 meters to the geyser, and than another 560 meters to hot spring pools where visitors can soak.
Geysers are a rare phenomenon, and only about 1,000 known geysers exist on Earth, making Pong Duat truly unique. The amazing geyser area had water temperatures which range upwards from 90 degrees Celsius/190 degrees Fahrenheit but the spring brook, where I soaked my feet, wasn't hot at all. Hiking trails also began in this area for those interested in a 2 day/1 night trek, sleeping in a local village. There's lots of activities in Thailand for everyone...

Three days and two nights on top of the mountain in Mae Taeng. Eating local food and enjoying the mountain top and cold weather . Just a short drive out of Chiang Mai . The food was great and the weather produced some beautiful clouds that rolled in during the morning hours . You must book far in advance or get on a waiting list as we did . The trip as you ll see was worth it !

Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten in Nordthailand gehört das kleine Städchen Pai. Allerdings trumpft Pai nicht mit besonderen Gebäuden auf - sondern mit einer wunderschönen Natur. Ein tolles Ausflugsziel sind die heißen Quellen Pong Nam Ron Thapai.
Wer gerne in warmen Thermalwasser bei 30 bis 35 Grad ein Bad nehmen würde, sollte unbedingt Badesachen mitnehmen. Mitten im Dschungel unter freiem Himmel kann man in den natürlichen Wasserbecken bei angenehmer Badewannen-Temperatur so richtig entspannen.
Für Wanderfreunde gibt es dort auch Naturpfade, die zu den wirklich heißen Quellen führen. Bei guten 90 Grad kann sich der/die ausgehungerte Wandersmann /-frau auch noch frische Eier für ein Picknick kochen. Es ist schon alles vorbereitet.
