Places to see in ( Poggibonsi - Italy )

Places to see in ( Poggibonsi - Italy )

Poggibonsi is a town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, central Italy. It is located on the Elsa River and is the main centre of the Valdelsa Valley. The area around Poggibonsi was already settled in the Neolithic age, although the first traces of civilisation dates from Etruscan-Roman age, attested by a series of necropolises and by placenames such as Talciona or Marturi (from the Etruscan name of Mars).

The importance of the area dates from the 10th century, thanks to its position across the Via Francigena, the main road from Rome to France. At that time, the development of Borgo di Marte (later Marturi, Borgo Vecchio and then Poggibonsi) was started, a settlement whose origins are debated. Around 1010, Borgo di Camaldo appeared. In 1155 or 1156, the inhabitants of these and other nearby towns were moved by Guido Guerra, of the Guidi Counts, to a hill where a new settlement, Poggiobonizio, was established. In the 12th century, the Cathars had a major theological school in Poggibonsi.

The Palazzo Pretorio (late 13th century), with the annexed Torre del Podestà was the seat of the local government until the construction of the Palazzo Comunale in the 19th century. The lower floor, with the loggia, is travertine, while the upper section is brick and travertine. Since 1997, it has housed a palaeontological museum. The Church of San Lorenzo, built by the Augustinian order in Gothic-Romanesque style. In 1495, it was the seat of the meeting between Charles VIII of France and Girolamo Savonarola.

Santuario del Romituzzo: 15th-century oratory-sanctuary with campanile and portico housing a venerated image of the Madonna della Neve (Madonna of the Snows). Basilica of San Luccese Large Gothic church, built around 1252 over a pre-existing church of San Camaldo, traces of which can be seen in the façade and left wall.

The Fonte delle Fate (Fairies' Spring) is one of the few remains of the destroyed Poggiobonizio, from the early 13th century. It was discovered in 1803. Castello della Magione, once home of the Knights Templars, and then given to the Knights Hospitallers after the Templars were abolished in 1312, is on the Via Francigena.

In the frazione of Staggia Senese is a notable castle (Rocca), probably dating from Lombard times, which belonged to the Florentine family of the Franzesi from the 13th century. Castello di Strozzavolpe (Castle of the Fox-Strangler) is an ancient fortress of the Guidi family. According to legend, it was connected to Poggibonizio by a tunnel. San Martino a Luco romanesque Pieve church.

The Church of Sant'Andrea a Palapiano, one of the most notable Romanesque edifices in the area. Santa Maria a Talciona: 12th-13th century church with bas-relief (1234) in portal portraying the Adoration of the Magi. San Lorenzo in Pian de' Campi: church houses a 15th-century fresco by Pier Francesco Fiorentino.

Ride in Tuscany: Home Tour H - Fortezza Poggio Imperiale Poggibonsi

This clip is part of the Home Tour H that you can find on strava:

The first part of the tour is nice, especially the Fortezza and the archeological park over Poggibonsi.

The second part, from Poggibonsi to Certaldo is a paved dangerous road that I do not suggest anyone to bike. I had to bike there today because it was almost sunset and I still had 20 kms to ride, therefore I took the shortest road.

The fortezza is a majestic building, worth to visit. It was one of the most important military defense base during the XVth century when Lorenzo il Magnifico saw on top of that hill the opportunity to build the military base, able to protect against the Aragonesi.

[4K 50 fps] Walk around the Badia Castle | Poggibonsi (SI) Tuscany, Italy | Slow TV

In this video we explored the area of the Castello di Badia, a castle located in the city of Poggibonsi in the province of Siena. Nowadays the Castello di Badia is an Agriturismo where it is possible to spend a relaxing vacation among culture and good wine.
It is located on a hill about 500 meters from the town of Poggibonsi, from here it is possible to see the beautiful vineyards of Chianti and it is also possible to reach, in about 30 minutes by car, Florence and Volterra, in 20 minutes Siena and in just 10 minutes San Gimignano.
The first certain traces of this place with its long history date back to July 25, 998, when Marquis Ugo of Tuscany donated it to the church with the hope of saving his soul from the feared end of the world which was expected in the year 1000. Later it became a very important Benedictine monastery, located on the ancient route of the Via Francigena, so as to become a must for pilgrimages to Rome.
In the 16th century, during the war between Florence and Siena, it was destroyed and then rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in 1886. After the reconstruction of the ancient structure only the 11th century cloister remained, but the walls, the walkways, the belvedere and the crenellated towers still maintain the atmosphere and charm of the Middle Ages.

In this channel we film from the point of view of the observer what surrounds us while we walk or ride scooter or bicycle.
The kind of film we make can be defined as Slow TV, i.e. filming ordinary events (such as a walk) for their entire duration, with original audio and without editing (except for unforeseen circumstances or technical reasons).
We decided to use this mode of shooting because we believe that in this way we can show (in addition to the places) a small slice of reality.

You can actively watch our videos, look at the details, read the names of the streets we pass through, and make comments about the places we visit (we'll be happy to reply).

Scopriamolo insieme…

San Gimignano, Italy: Make a Day Trip from Florence

San Gimignano is known for its medieval towers, cobblestone streets, and views of the Tuscan countryside.
It's a perfect day trip from Florence. For a complete guide, check:

You can rent a car and drive through the vineyards and rolling hills from Florence in a little over an hour.
Alternatively, you can take the train and bus. Trenitalia (the train line) won't bring you the entire way to San Gimignano.

From Florence, you’ll need a ticket to Poggibonsi. It’ll be about $10 for the 90-minute ride.
From the station, you can hire a taxi driver if you find one outside, or take the bus up the hill 25 minutes to San Gimignano.

00:45 Walking in San Gimignano
00:58 Shopping in San Gimignano

01:44 The best time to visit San Gimignano

Walking through the medieval walls into town will take you back a thousand years to when San Gimignano started to take shape as a stop on the trade route between Florence and Rome.

Today, San Gimignano draws tourists to its streets, lined with shops and restaurants.
You’ll find all kinds of Italian foods Tuscany is known for: meats, cheese, wines, and more

Around a dozen of the original towers in town are still standing, and you can climb a few of them for a view of the countryside.

San Gimignano gets crowded during peak tourist season in Italy, but for good reason! It's a beautiful spot with great shopping and delicious food ... a short ride from Florence.

The Archeological parc is located on the Poggio Imperiale above Poggibonsi, and surrounded by the medieval city walls of the Fortezza.
The ruins are from the 5th century AD up to the 15th century when the Fortezza was built.
It is the only open-air museum in Italy where some of the medieval buildings have been reconstructed. Surely worth a visit, on foot would be better.
I am not sure if it is allowed to bike there (I did not see any sign - nowhere), but I suggest you arrive there by bike and then continue on foot to fully enjoy the parc.
