Piva lake offers everything you can expect from a cruise, and even more than that, its emerald – blue waters full of fish (trout and chub), a paradise for fishing enthusiasts. Sometimes there’s fish in such numbers that it seems like it can be caught by hand and that you don’t even need the equipment.Like several other areas in Montenegro, including the Durmitor National Park, Piva is characterized by it’s extreme, untouched natural beauty.According opinion of many tourists, northern region is the most attractive part of Montenegro. Exciting landscapes, beautiful lakes, spectacular view points, interesting history of this part of Montenegro will not leave you indifferent. Furthermore…just the drive itself is breathtaking.
Pluzine, small town situated on the shore of Piva lake situated in beautiful surroundings, with peaks of Durmitor, Volujak and Ledenica in the distance, carries the title of the youngest town in the region. Beautiful nature and builders gave the town something special which remains in the memory of those who visit this town.
After the building Mratinje Dam which was formed by construction of the Piva hydro-electric plant in 1975 (240 m high), the town was transferred uphill, while the previous location was flooded by newly created Piva Lake.
Region of Piva lies to the northwest of Montenegro near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Piva is first regional nature park in Montenegro, was declared on 22 April 2015, on the Earth Day. Nature park has international importance because it connects the National Park Sutjeska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the National Park Durmitor. It occupies an area of almost 32,500 hectares.
Like several other areas in Montenegro, including the Durmitor National Park, Piva is characterized by it’s extreme, untouched natural beauty. The landscape near Piva is marked by dense stands of trees, and limestone plateaus cut by canyons formed by the Tara, Piva, Komarnica and Susica rivers, forming a system of rivers and deep canyons unlike any other in the world.
Many people say that Piva Canyon was even more beautiful, more attractive and more mysterious then the Tara canyon. The lowest point of the regional park Piva is at an altitude of 433 meters at Scepan polje (polje – field), at the confluence of the rivers Piva and Tara, which together on the border between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, create river Drina. This area is best known for the rafting on the river Tara.

Durmitor: road from Plužine to Žabljak (Montenegro)
Durmitor is a massif located in northwestern Montenegro. It is part of the Dinaric Alps. Its highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, reaches a height of 2,523 meters (8,278 ft).
The massif is limited by the Tara River Canyon on the north, the Piva River Canyon on the west, and by the Komarnica River Canyon on the south. To the east, the Durmitor opens to a 1,500 m (4,921 ft) high plateau, called Jezerska površ (Plateau of Lakes). The Sinjavina mountain is located to the east of the Jezerska površ plateau. The Durmitor is for the most part located in the Žabljak municipality.
The massif gives its name to the national park that comprises it. Durmitor National Park was founded in 1952, and designated as a World Heritage Site in 1980.
Lake Piva is a reservoir in Montenegro. It is located in the northwest part of the country, in Plužine Municipality. The surface of the lake is 12.5 km², the length is 45 km, and the maximum depth is 188 m.[citation needed] The elevation is 675 m above sea level.[citation needed]
The artificial lake is the result of the construction of Mratinje Dam on the Piva river.[1] On the bottom of the lake there is the old town Plužine; Piva Monastery was also there, but it has been relocated. The new location of the monastery is 8 km from Plužine, and 3.5 km away from the original location of the monastery. The relocation has started in 1969 and finished in 1982.[2]

Most Beautiful Places in Montenegro - PIVA LAKE, Pluzine
Protected nature park with stunning Piva canyon where 45 kilometers (around 28 mi) long artificial Piva Lake is tucked, winding road with 56 hand-made tunnels, a 220 meters (721 feet) high dam “Mratinje” are only few things here that will leave you breathless!
Piva Lake was formed after Piva River was dammed in 1979, making it the most elevated artificial water reservoir in the world (675m – 2214 feet).
Its turquoise color changes with light and the weather, perfectly matching the surrounding mountains.
Piva is among best places to visit in Montenegro, ideal for relaxing holiday away from the crowds, and besides enjoying its magnificent views, you can do many outdoor activities like boat cruising, fishing, zip-lining, and hiking.
Recommended places to stay and base up here are beautiful ethno village Izlazak, or the new town of Pluzine, as the old one was submerged when the lake was formed and now it’s laying under the water.
Similar thing would have happened to the Piva Monastery, but knowing the cultural and religious value of it, government of Yugoslavia decided to relocate the monastery before the dam was finished, rock by rock and save it from destruction. Now, if you visit this sacred place, you may see the numbers written on individual stones so it could be put back together in the original form. Impressive.
To get to Pluzine and Piva, you can use public transportation, but managing around is possible with a taxi or a car, since this here is rural area of Montenegro. Zipline Plužine (Montenegro)
The Zipline, which is located in Plužine, starts from the Guesthouse “Eko-Piva”, continues over well-known Piva Lake and after that you use another zip cable to get to your final destination in front of the bridge on Piva Lake.
The total length of the Zipline is 1400 meters, which makes it the longest Zipline in Montenegro.
The duration of the flight is about 2 minutes. The maximum speed of the flight is 65 km/h.

Коли я побачила це місце, то просто затамувала подих. Неймовірна краса Півського озера вражає і душу і серце. Хочеться піти по тій романтичній доріжці. Вода - справжнє скло , відзеркалює навколишній світ. Це озеро - Півське водосховище. Коли почали будувати дамби для отримання електроенергії в Чорногорії, то утворилися неймовірної краси озера. Але знову ж таки .... як і в Україні...для цього прийшлося затопити ціле місто Plužine. Найглибше місце має 188 метрів.
When I saw this place, I just held my breath. The incredible beauty of Lake Piva impresses both soul and heart. I want to follow that romantic path. Water - real glass, reflects the world around. This lake is Pivske Reservoir. When they started building dams to generate electricity in Montenegro, the incredible beauty of the lake was formed. But again .... as in Ukraine ... for this they had to flood the whole city of Plužine. The deepest place is 188 meters.
Piva Monastery Montenegro
The monastery Piva is located in Pluzine and is considered to be one of the most important Orthodox monasteries in Montenegro.
Long time ago it was located at the spring of the River Piva, in order for it to be moved later to another location because of the construction of a dam and accumulation lake for the needs of hydro – electrical power station. The movement of the church lasted for about 12 years and what is characteristic for this monastery is that the old church has been transferred stone by stone (the old church was un-built, and from that same stone a new church in another place was built), two kilometers away from Pluzine. Work on relocating the church lasted from 1970 to 1982. From the church walls 1,260 square metres of frescoes were removed and then relocated.
The monastery Church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God was built between 1573 and 1586 through the efforts of Herzeg Metropolitan Savatija, who later on became the Serbian patriarch. During Turkish occupation, construction became possible due to Savatij’s uncle Mehmed-Pasha Sokolovic, one of the Constantinopolitan viziers.
The church is a three-nave construction with a taller middle nave, without a cupola. In addition to the architecture, its value is represented in the fresco paintings. The main part of the church was decorated by anonymous Greek painters between 1604 and 1605. The upper parts of the porch were painted by a local painter – the priest Strahinja from Budimlje, who painted Akatist to the Mother of God, on the most prominent part of the church. On the lower parts there are works by the refined painter Kozma, dating from 1626. He also painted most of the icons on the gilded, richly carved iconostasis. The throne icons of the Mother of God, Christ and Assumption of the Mother of God were painted by the artist Longin.
The monastery owns a great treasury: Psalter of Djuradj Crnojevic from 1495, “omofor” of Savtije Sokolovic from 1568, personal belongings of Bajo Pivljanin - national hero, and many other things. The Monastery's Treasury is well known for the abundance of ritual objects and liturgical books, part of which has been exhibited in Monastery's Museum.
