Back in 2013, my wife Ana and I spent 22 days driving around the beautiful Balkan country of Bulgaria. These are the 15 places you have to visit in Bulgaria!
1. Sofia
Bulgaria’s capital and largest city is the ancient city of Sofia. It’s the perfect city to begin your Bulgarian vacation. Check out Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the National Archaeological Museum, and the ruins of the Fortress of Serdika.
2. Rila Monastery
About 73 miles south of Sofia is Rila Monastery, the largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It’s famous for its beautiful frescoes!
3. Plovdiv
Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Check out the 2nd century Stadium, the Ancient Forum, the Old Town, and the pedestrian-friendly city center!
4. Hisarya
From Plovdiv, take a day trip to the ancient Roman town of Hisarya, which is home to some of the best-preserved Roman gates and walls in Bulgaria, as well as ancient streets, Roman baths, and an amphitheater!
5. Stara Zagora
In Stara Zagora, visit the Neolithic Dwellings Museum, the Regional History Museum, and the Roman Forum of Augusta Trayana!
6. Burgas
In the coastal city of Burgas, check out the Sea Garden and Sculpture Garden, the Archaeological Museum of Burgas, and the annual Sand Festival. Grab a bite at either Ethnos Restaurant or Vodenitsata Restaurant.
7. Sozopol
Sozopol is a seaside town that dates back to the 7th century BC. You can find the remains of Apollonia on St. Kirik Island, and remains of the old city walls around town. Don’t forget the annual Apollonia Art Festival!
8. Pomorie
In the seaside resort town of Pomorie, check out its beach as well as the town’s wine production, salt production, and mineral water. You also can’t miss the unique Beehive Tomb, the only tomb of its kind in Bulgaria!
9. Varna
In the ancient city of Varna, visit Dormition of Mother of God Cathedral, the 2nd century Varna Roman Baths, and the Varna Necropolis. Don’t miss the oldest gold treasure known to man, the Gold of Varna, at the Varna Archaeological Museum!
10. Balchik Palace
Balchik Palace stands between the cliffs and the sea two kilometers south of Balchik. It’s made up of several buildings, a monastery, chapel, and more, and offers stunning views of the Black Sea!
11. Pliska
While in Varna, take a day trip to Pliska, a small town that served as the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 681 to 893 AD. The Byzantines burned Pliska to the ground, leaving only remains of the royal palace, the basilica, and walls.
12. Ruse
In Ruse, check out the historical architecture, the Pantheon of National Revival Heroes and the Regional Museum of History, and then have a traditional meal at Mehana Chiflika. Take a day trip from Ruse to the Rock Churches of Ivanovo!
13. Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo is a beautiful, 5,000-year-old city along the Yantra River. Notable sites include Tsaravets Fortress, the Old Town, and the Archaeological Museum. Don’t forget the Assens Monument!
14. Nicopolis ad Istrum
A great day trip from Veliko Tarnovo is the early Byzantine city of Nikopolis ad Istrum, founded in 106 AD by Emperor Trajan. The city’s remains include ancient streets, a forum, public baths, an odeon, public buildings, and an agora.
15. Maryan Winery
To get a taste of some of Bulgaria’s best wine, visit Maryan Winery in the village of Elena. They produce an award-winning rosé as well as limited amounts of Savignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and other blends.

Visiting Plovdiv? The amazing Bulgarian city of Plovdiv is a must-visit tourist destination. One of the most historically important cities in all of Europe, Plovdiv combines that amazing past with a vibrant present-day sophistication and charm.
Built on a number of hills the Old Town of Plovdiv should be right on the top of your list of things to do in Plovdiv. The historic house museums and their wonderful architectural features are a major highlight of any trip here while some of the ruins you'll see on top of Nebet Tepe and Shata Tepe date back into the heart of neolithic times - they also provide wonderful views over the city itself.
The remnants of Roman occupation in Plovdiv provides history lovers with some great sights - namely the theatre of Philippopolis and the Roman Stadium - both of these are rated highly out of the places to go in Plovdiv. The great news is that Plovdiv is going a very good job of celebrating this past with restoration work of historical importance continuing to be championed by city authorities.
For those looking for day trips away from the city itself then excursions to Bachkovo Monastery and Asen's Fortress will provide plenty of breathtaking sights. Both of these places will fill up your camera with some great images and memories!
Shopping and night life can be enjoyed in the Kapana District which has undergone a transformation over the last decades and is now the place to be seen around the city.
The Hillock of Fraternity and the Alyosha Monument are additional places you may want to visit in Plovdiv with Soviet occupation and sacrifices remembered in concrete creations.

Plovdiv is the second-largest city of Bulgaria, a country in Southeastern Europe. The city is a European Capital of Culture 2019. There is evidence of habitation in Plovdiv dating back to the 6th millennium BCE. It has been considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world. Plovdiv is situated on the two banks of the Maritsa River. The city has historically developed on seven syenite hills, some of which are 250 metres (820 feet) high. Because of these hills, Plovdiv is often referred to in Bulgaria as The City of the Seven Hills. Plovdiv is host to a huge variety of cultural events.

Top best places to visit in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest cities in the world.
Plovdiv has evidence of habitation since the 6th millennium BC. It has historically developed on seven hills and that’s why it is often referred to as the City of the Seven Hills.
The main city plaza is the Central Square. It used to be a Forum Romanum, the center of ancient public life.
Adjacent to the square is the Garden of Tsar Simeon, a beautiful park with gorgeous singing fountains.
The square is connected to the main walking street, known as Glavnata. The pedestrian zone full of shops, galleries, and cafes.
Along this street is the starting point of many guided tours, located just in front of the Municipality Building.
The street leads to two interesting districts. A bohemian quarter full of artists and pubs, the Kapana.
And to the very enjoyable Old Town, which is free of cars in this area with many cobblestone streets and historic houses turned into museums.
Almost every house in the Old Town has its characteristic exterior and interior decoration.
Plovdiv was selected as the European Capital of Culture thanks to its numerous museums, galleries and cultural events.
Plovdiv has been a gathering center for the Orthodox Christians for centuries, so there are several churches worth a visit, such as:
The Virgin Mary Church,
The very impressive St Marina Church with a unique pillar arcade.
And the Church of St Constantine and Helena which is considered to be among the oldest churches in Bulgaria.
Two mosques have remained in the city since the Ottoman era.
The Imarethane Mosque with different, interesting minaret.
And, in the center, the Dzhumaya Mosque.
Next to it, at the end of Glavnata, is the Ancient Stadium from the Roman times.
Plovdiv was known for most of its history by the name Philippopolis. There are many remains from those times, like:
The Roman Odeon.
The Roman Amphitheater, probably the most famous tourist attraction in the city.
The Small Basilica, the ruins of the early Christian church in recently restored building.
The Eastern Gate, one of the three entrances of the ancient city.
The Roman Fortress, with parts of defensive walls, towers and ancient buildings.
From the fort there is a great view of Plovdiv.
