OAXACA, MEXICO | The Perfect Oaxaca Travel Itinerary (Coast to the Mountains in 2-3 weeks)

Oaxaca lies in the southwest of Mexico. It’s made up of a vast coastline and rugged mountains, with narrow valleys, canyons and ravines between them. Oaxaca is best known for its unique cuisine as well as its indigenous people and cultures. The largest indigenous groups are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen groups that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in Mexico thanks to the state's isolating terrain and commitment to honoring traditions. In this video, we will show you the perfect Oaxaca itinerary. This itinerary is recommended for at least a 14 day stay in Oaxaca and can be completed by public transportation, rental car, or a mix of both!

Stop 1: Puerto Escondido
How to get here: Direct flights from Mexico City and Guadalajara
Recommended stay: 3-5 days

Stop 2: Mazunte
How to get here: Bus from Puerto Escondido to Pochutla and tell the bus driver that you want to get off at San Antonio. From there, you’ll have to take a taxi or local collectivo.
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 3: Zipolite
How to get here: 20-minute taxi ride from Mazunte
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 4: San José del Pacifico
How to get here: Bus from Lineas Unidas Bus station in Zipolite directly to José del Pacifico
Recommended stay: 2-3 days

Stop 5: Oaxaca City
How to get here: Bus from San José del Pacifico main road to Oaxaca City (bus leaves every hour)
Recommended stay: 7 days including day trips as mentioned below

Stop 6: Mitla
How to get there? Take a bus or rent a car from Oaxaca City, which will take you here in approximately 1 hour.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 7: Hierve el Agua
How to get there? Located 70 kms or 43 miles from Oaxaca City, this is another site you can do as a day trip. You can rent a car or take a tour from Oaxaca. Alternatively, you can come by collectivo from Mitla.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 8: Pueblos Mancomunados
How to get there? There are buses to Cuajimoloyas and Benito Juárez that leave from the “second class” bus station in Oaxaca City a few times a day. The driver will drop you off near the “tourist office” where you can book your activities and accommodation.
Recommended stay: 1-5 days

Where to next?
After exploring the highlights of Oaxaca, you can continue your journey across other states in Mexico. The most common travel route goes to the southeast to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. It’s possible to take the ADO night bus from Oaxaca City, which takes about 12 hours.

Alternatively, you can head to the north towards Puebla and Mexico City. Puebla is another beautiful city and gateway to the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. It takes about 4 hours to get here.

From Fame to Farming: My Day with a Mexican Actor

Watch the movie La Negrada:

I spent my day with the famous Mexican actor Felipe Neri. He was the lead actor in the movie La Negrada. I met in while I was in Collantes and he was gracious enough to share his life with me. We visited his coconut farm and cows. We talked about racism in Mexico, Africa, and problems in the community. I got a haircut and we celebrated his 57th birthday. We talked about the word Negro and if it is offensive. Alcohol abuse in the community. I would love to see him in more movies and TV shows.

Pinotepa Nacional - 1996 - Part 1 - 02 1996 00001

My journey to the western part of Oaxaca. It began in Puerto Escondido and then I went north to Pinotepa to participate in the Mardi Gras festivities. A restaurant on the beach called Los Cronos was where one could have grilled fish delivered right off the boat. And the hotel whose German owner was kind of a Mr. Fawlty kind of guy. Puerto is two towns. The main town and then the beach town where pretty much everyone stays as the town town is just a typical Mexican town. People talk about the big waves and the surfing in Puerto Escondido but, it's a beach break and very short and dangerous as it dumps you right into the sand. The big waves come, I believe, in the winter months.

Sony a7iv documentary shot in Puerto Escondido and Pinotepa De Don Luis in Oaxaca, Mexico

Survival of the Tixinda co-operative’s 3000-year-old Mixtec culture faces increasing challenges.

Illegal poaching and environmental challenges threaten an endangered snail which keeps this purple art alive.

For our latest documentary, we visited Pinotepa De Don Luis and learned more about the efforts to save this ancient tradition from disappearing.

Hierve El Agua in Oaxaca Mexico walking around on mountain. Jan 2016.

Drove to Hierve El Agua in Oaxaca Mexico, and you have to pay two different towns to get there. First town wants a fee to go through there town to get there. Once you get there, then you pay admission in the other town where this site is. The fee was like 1.00$ or 10 pesos per person in vehicle.
Video is of us walking down the mountain to the water on top of the mountain and watching people swim, site see and then walk back up.

The Huasteca Lands of Veracruz, Mexico

Films taken around the village of Hníní, in the township of Dãndéhé, Veracruz. The Huasteca is a hilly, subtropical lowland region near the Gulf of Mexico.
At least five different native societies have coexisted in Dãndéhé, but the community of Hníní is largely Otomí. Their shamans were very helpful in teaching me about modern native costumbre rituals, which I connected to ancient Mesoamerican beliefs in my memoir The Shaman's
Cross.

Lunes Santo Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca Vacations Travel

LUNES SANTO, Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca- México.

On Monday during the Holy Week in Easter, the Zapotecs of XiGuie'a (Teotitlan del Valle) make a procession that lasts all day, they take Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary walking around the town on the main streets they stop at every main corner, where the build Sacred Houses made with rugs. Here they stop, pray and give offerings to God. The brass band accompanies during all the procession, candles and flowers decorate the scenes.
I imagine this procession is an evolution of ancient pilgrimages carried out by our ancestors. Exactly during this season people are waiting for the first rain and begin to prepare the land for the up coming farming cycle. I can Imagine the image of the God of the rain being taken out of the temples to the streets where Zapotec offer corn, incense, flowers, etc...
