OAXACA, MEXICO | The Perfect Oaxaca Travel Itinerary (Coast to the Mountains in 2-3 weeks)

Oaxaca lies in the southwest of Mexico. It’s made up of a vast coastline and rugged mountains, with narrow valleys, canyons and ravines between them. Oaxaca is best known for its unique cuisine as well as its indigenous people and cultures. The largest indigenous groups are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen groups that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in Mexico thanks to the state's isolating terrain and commitment to honoring traditions. In this video, we will show you the perfect Oaxaca itinerary. This itinerary is recommended for at least a 14 day stay in Oaxaca and can be completed by public transportation, rental car, or a mix of both!

Stop 1: Puerto Escondido
How to get here: Direct flights from Mexico City and Guadalajara
Recommended stay: 3-5 days

Stop 2: Mazunte
How to get here: Bus from Puerto Escondido to Pochutla and tell the bus driver that you want to get off at San Antonio. From there, you’ll have to take a taxi or local collectivo.
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 3: Zipolite
How to get here: 20-minute taxi ride from Mazunte
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 4: San José del Pacifico
How to get here: Bus from Lineas Unidas Bus station in Zipolite directly to José del Pacifico
Recommended stay: 2-3 days

Stop 5: Oaxaca City
How to get here: Bus from San José del Pacifico main road to Oaxaca City (bus leaves every hour)
Recommended stay: 7 days including day trips as mentioned below

Stop 6: Mitla
How to get there? Take a bus or rent a car from Oaxaca City, which will take you here in approximately 1 hour.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 7: Hierve el Agua
How to get there? Located 70 kms or 43 miles from Oaxaca City, this is another site you can do as a day trip. You can rent a car or take a tour from Oaxaca. Alternatively, you can come by collectivo from Mitla.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 8: Pueblos Mancomunados
How to get there? There are buses to Cuajimoloyas and Benito Juárez that leave from the “second class” bus station in Oaxaca City a few times a day. The driver will drop you off near the “tourist office” where you can book your activities and accommodation.
Recommended stay: 1-5 days

Where to next?
After exploring the highlights of Oaxaca, you can continue your journey across other states in Mexico. The most common travel route goes to the southeast to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. It’s possible to take the ADO night bus from Oaxaca City, which takes about 12 hours.

Alternatively, you can head to the north towards Puebla and Mexico City. Puebla is another beautiful city and gateway to the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. It takes about 4 hours to get here.

Bascha's Travel Guide for Goddesses: Hotel Los Pillares in Oaxaca, South Mexico

Welcome to my 'Travel Guide for Godesses' -of course, a goddess may take along her beloved man or other goddess ladies for a girly retreat.

Highly recommend any traveller to Oaxaca and environs to stay at Hostal Los Pillares. Have taken a video for you using my I-phone, as that was all I had on me, quality is pretty good.
What is important is to revel in the ambience, the hacienda style hotel with unique central courtyard al fresco dining, cute fully stocked bar, semi outdoor breakfast area upstairs with friendly mexican service, attention to details, masses of fresh (yes, not plastic!) flowers in the foyers, private cosy corners and potted plants amass in the dining area.

The rooms, spacious with traditional decor however still modern facilities, boast beautiful linen, top tiled spacious showers with exquisite shower gel, even complimentary mouthwash, that's a first! Beds firm and comfortable, complimentary Wi fi throughout the hotel. The high quality fluffy LARGE bath towels left me feeling so pampered! Great price per night with all expectations exceeded. Very central walking distance to centre, along historic imbedded stoned streets.
Attentive authentic reception service, secure parking, great value for money all round.
Check it out

NO, I am not working on commission for this hotel, have merely had a small hotel myself in New Zealand so know the industry well, and as an Energy Medium and background in Fashion Design.

I am sensitive to living spaces and this one is certainly a sacred living space for all those who choose to stay at Los Pillares.

Pinotepa Nacional - 1996 - Part 1 - 02 1996 00001

My journey to the western part of Oaxaca. It began in Puerto Escondido and then I went north to Pinotepa to participate in the Mardi Gras festivities. A restaurant on the beach called Los Cronos was where one could have grilled fish delivered right off the boat. And the hotel whose German owner was kind of a Mr. Fawlty kind of guy. Puerto is two towns. The main town and then the beach town where pretty much everyone stays as the town town is just a typical Mexican town. People talk about the big waves and the surfing in Puerto Escondido but, it's a beach break and very short and dangerous as it dumps you right into the sand. The big waves come, I believe, in the winter months.

map of Oaxaca [ State of Oaxaca ]

Oaxaca (English: /wəˈhækə/ wə-HA-kə, also US: /wɑːˈhɑːkɑː/ wah-HAH-kah, Spanish: [waˈxaka] (audio speaker iconlisten), from Classical Nahuatl: Huāxyacac [waːʃˈjakak] (audio speaker iconlisten)), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Oaxaca (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Oaxaca), is one of the 32 states that compose the Federative Entities of Mexico. It is divided into 570 municipalities, of which 418 (almost three quarters) are governed by the system of usos y costumbres (customs and traditions) with recognized local forms of self-governance. Its capital city is Oaxaca de Juárez.

Oaxaca is in southwestern Mexico.] It is bordered by the states of Guerrero to the west, Puebla to the northwest, Veracruz to the north, and Chiapas to the east. To the south, Oaxaca has a significant coastline on the Pacific Ocean.

The state is best known for its indigenous peoples and cultures. The most numerous and best known are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in México due to the state's rugged and isolating terrain. Most live in the Central Valleys region, which is also an economically important area for tourism, with people attracted for its archeological sites such as Monte Albán, and Mitla,[11] and its various native cultures and crafts. Another important tourist area is the coast, which has the major resort of Huatulco and sandy beaches of Puerto Escondido, Puerto Ángel, Zipolite, Bahia de Tembo, and Mazunte. Oaxaca is also one of the most biologically diverse states in Mexico, ranking in the top three, along with Chiapas and Veracruz, for numbers of reptiles, amphibians, mammals and plants. The mountains are mostly formed by the convergence of the Sierra Madre del Sur, the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca and the Sierra Atravesada into what is called the Oaxaca Complex (Complejo Oaxaqueño). The Sierra Madre del Sur runs along the coast with an average width of 150 km (93 mi) and a minimum height of 2,000 meters (6,562 ft) asl with peaks over 2,500 m (8,202 ft) asl. In various regions the chain is locally known by other names, such as the Sierra de Miahuatlán and the Sierra de la Garza. The Sierra Madre de Oaxaca enters the state from the Puebla and Veracruz borders in the Tuxtepec region, running northwest to southeast towards the Central Valleys region, then onto the Tehuantepec area. Local names for parts of this range include Sierra de Tamazulapan, Sierra de Nochixtlan, Sierra de Huautla, Sierra de Juárez, Sierra de Ixtlan and others. Average altitude is 2,500 m (8,202 ft) asl with peaks over 3,000 m (9,843 ft) asl and width averages at about 75 km (47 mi). The Sierra Atravesada is a prolongation of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. This range is not as high as the other two with an average elevation of just over 600 meters (1,969 ft). Most of it is located in the Juchitán district running east–west.[31]

The only valleys of any real size are the Central Valleys between Etla and Miahuatlán, which contains the city of Oaxaca. Smaller populated valleys include Nochixtlan, Nejapa, Cuicatlan and Tuxtepec. Small mesas contain population centers such as Putla, Juxtlahuaca, Tamazulapan, Zacatepec, Tlaxiaco and Huajuapan. The largest canyons in the state are those in the Cuicatlán area and include the Cortés, Galicia and María in the municipality of Tlaxiaco. There are a very large number of small canyons as well as ravines and arroyos of all sizes.

The mountainous terrain allows for no navigable rivers; instead, there are a large number of smaller ones, which often change name from area to area. The continental divide passes through the state, meaning that there is drainage towards both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. Most of the drainage towards the Gulf is represented by the Papaloapan and Coatzacoalcos Rivers and their tributaries such as the Grande and Salado Rivers. Three rivers account for most of the water headed for the Pacific: the Mixteco, Atoyac and Tehuantepec Rivers with their tributaries.] Other important rivers and streams include the Tequisistlán, Santo Domingo, Putla, Minas, Puxmetacán-Trinidad, La Arena, Cajonos, Tenango, Tonto, Huamelula, San Antonio, Ayutla, Joquila, Copalita, Calapa, Colotepec, Aguacatenango-Jaltepec, Los Perros, El Corte, Espíritu Santo, Sarabia, Ostuta, Petapa and Petlapa.

'Twas the perfect day of gluttony in Oaxaca, Mexico, featuring: one of the best espressos we've had anywhere in the world, a guava tart, the best tlayuda of our lives, our first tejate, three different types of tamales (one of them served inside flaky bread), and to top it all off, a horchata and an incredibly culinarily interesting vegan mole tasting. Hope it all looks as good as it tasted!
