A Few, Smaller Dutch Towns

08/04/2021 - Voorburg, Leidschendam, Pijnacker, Delfgauw, and Delft, NL

Exploring five roads in small towns within 15 km of Den Haag, NL. In Voorburg and Leidschendam, we traverse the Old Town city centers. At Pijnacker, we travel down the main street of this busy town. Just outside Delfgauw, perhaps the smallest town, we pass a beautiful meadow. And in Delft, we get outside the tourist center in a residential area. Certainly a lot of character and contrasts in each of these locations!

NETHERLANDS TOP ATTRACTIONS | RPG TRAVELS

The Netherlands, a country in northwestern Europe, is known for a flat landscape of canals, tulip fields, windmills and cycling routes. Amsterdam, the capital, is home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the house where Jewish diarist Anne Frank hid during WWII. Canalside mansions and a trove of works from artists including Rembrandt and Vermeer remain from the city's 17th-century Golden Age.

Dolmen 53 and 54 in Drenthe NL - Hunebed D53 en D54

Dolmen 53 and 54 - in Drenthe NL - hunebed D53 en D54
We went on a road trip up to the northern parts of the low lands, The Netherlands, to check out a few of the ancient rock structures. Very old dolmens! A dolmen in Dutch is called a hunebed. These megalithic structures have always amazed me.

We drove to Hunebed D53, which is located at Havelte on the Havelterberg (hill) in the Dutch province of Drenthe. The hunebed or dolmen is located north of the Hunebeddenweg, on a side road of the Van Helomaweg. On the other side of the road is the smaller D54, which we also check out in this 4K video.

D53 is one of the largest dolmens in the Netherlands! We read,

“D53 is the second largest hunebed in Holland (D27 is 'the first') and one with a remarkable history.
It counts 9 capstones, all of them resting nicely on their foundations, consisting of 23 sidestones and 2 endstones. There is a complete porch with 4 passage sidestones and 1 capstone. Of the big oval wrench, 10 kerbstones are still there. ” Source:

D53 was built between 3400 and 3100 BC. and is attributed to the Funnelbeaker culture. They claim those peoples were in north Central Europe (Holland and Germany) from 4000 BC to 2800 BC! “The Funnelbeaker culture (trechterbekercultuur in Dutch) is named for its characteristic ceramics, beakers and amphorae with funnel-shaped tops, which were found in dolmen burials.” Source:

The dolmen is 18.9 meters long and 4.4 meters wide and has 21 supporting stones, four keystones (on the west side there is one large and two small keystones.) and nine capstones. The gate is also still there, complete with four gate stones and a gate capstone. Ten of the wreath stones are still present. It’s pretty impressive!

#dolmen #hunebed #megalith

Dolmen D54 has 6 capstones and smaller, as such, then D53, but very close, within sight, from D53. There is also a great series of walking paths through the woods and meadows there. A great place to hike and spend a day, dolmen D53 and 54 in The Netherlands!

Amsterdam | Journey to the Netherlands ???????? | Part 1

Ah yes its finally time to actually go somewhere different than beautiful Prague. This time I hopped on a plane to go to the Netherlands. First stop is famous and wonderful Amsterdam.

After a flight of just over an hour I arrived at Schiphol airport, a place that I know very well as long time ago I actually used to work around that area but that's a story for later on in the series.

After checking into my hotel I got on a train (train station is right under the airport) and within just 20 minutes I was in the city center of Amsterdam.

Unfortunately for me I am not very well known in Amsterdam and with only a few short hours to spend I wasn't able to see as much as I wanted to but join me on my small journey in this city and experience a very special day in Amsterdam. Reason for this day being more special than others days you will find out in the video but what a day did I pick to go to Amsterdam...No wonder it was getting so crowded.

Anyway hit the like button if you liked the video. Part 2 (final) will arrive next week before I go to a city that to me is more interesting. So subscribe if you don't want to miss that or if you haven't already.

You can also follow me on Instagram (although I really have to post more) and on Twitter (same story as with Instagram)

Today we hit Pijnacker. Marvelled at the excellent bicycle parking facilities at the station and the usually well-functioning bicycle facilities. One residential street was decorated with some football(?) related stuff.

Ice skating 4K Nieuwkoopse Plassen - The Netherlands ????????

Ice skating on the Nieuwkoopse Plassen filmed in 4K

For the first time in 10 years we could skate again on the frozen lakes of the Nieuwkoopse Plassen! Skating on natural ice is really a special experience

The Nieuwkoopse Plassen is a typical Dutch landscape. It is not surprising that painters of the Hague School such as Roelofs and Weissenbruch found their inspiration here around 1885. But there is much more. This beautiful swamp has a hidden beauty.

The large lakes are in the summer busy with 'pleasure craft' (cabin boats). The ditches and smaller lakes are ideal for a trip with a rowboat or canoe. There are several marinas and boat rental companies on the Zuideinde. How unique it is that we were able to skate on the frozen water this winter!

Pilgrim Fathers departed Delfshaven, Holland 400 years ago this year

The Pilgrim Fathers departed The Netherlands, aka, Holland, 400 years ago to the year! As such, we cruised over to what is today a beautiful neighbourhood in Rotterdam, Delfshaven. This is where the Pilgrims, whom had been living in Leiden, The Netherlands for 11 years, planned and started their journey to the New World, to become the Founding Fathers, under God, of America. Naturally the founding fathers are later seen as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and such. However, the Pilgrims are seen as the true start of America and ultimately the United States.

Delfshaven used to be unincorporated 400 years ago. It was, however, under the control of Delft. The English shipping and trading company, the Merchant Adventurers, come into the picture here. The have a very interesting history, which we can go into later, but effectively they had a monopoly on wool trading in Holland and in many parts of the world. They struck a deal with the Pilgrim leaders to take them to the new world, Virginia to be exact. (The Pilgrims ended up landing much further north, near present day Boston in Plymouth, Massachusetts. I’ve been to that rock where it is says they landed - so fitting that I get to now be at the place where they departed!) Part of the deal was to help them (The Merchant Adventurers) with their trade from America back to England and Europe.

Here is the video on the Mayflower almost sinking and saved by a printers screw:

By the way, come into the live stream, cyber Monday on the Markzware channel:

Central to this story of departure, as there is not much written about it, accept their visit and the prayer at the Pilgrims Father Church (Pelgrimvaderskerk). This was called originally in 1417 St Anthony (Catholic) and in 1512 during the Reformation it fell into Protestant hands and was re-named Saint-Antonius Chapel.

After living in Leiden for eleven years, they decided to become Pilgrims and cross to America, where they might worship God in their own way and still be Englishmen. The Speedwell left Delfshaven, on 21 July 1620, bound for America. According to the chronicles the Pilgrim Fathers knelt down in prayer on the quay near the church. Much later, American visitors gave the church its third name, Pilgrim Fathers' Church.” Source:

Very interesting. The Dutch years for the Pilgrims also helped shape America, well as we know it. Relatively tolerant. As we read:

“The Netherlands’ atmosphere of religious freedom tended to have a liberalizing effect on the Pilgrims. John Robinson, for example, was invited to debate at Leyden University. Although he never changed his Separatist views, he did learn that men of different faiths could live together without killing one another. Later, in the New World, Plymouth Colony would prove to be a handy buffer zone between the Puritans’ Massachusetts Bay Colony and the more radical colonists in Rhode Island. When Harvard’s first president, Henry Dunster, for example, resigned because he came to reject the Puritan doctrine of infant baptism, he set-fled in Plymouth. The Pilgrims also believed in infant baptism, but they had become tolerant enough to “agree to disagree” with other Christians like Dunster.” Source:

It’s also clear that the Pilgrim Fathers, were very thankful for their time in Holland, The Netherlands:

“The Pilgrims left Leyden in 1620; William Bradford described their departure in a now-famous passage which later gave the Pilgrims their name: “So they left that goodly and pleasant city which had been their resting place near twelve years; but they knew they were pilgrims, and looked not much on those things, but lift up their eyes to the heavens, their dearest country, and quieted their spirits.”[” Source:

How did they become know as Pilgrim Fathers, saints even?
“These first settlers, initially referred to as the Old Comers and later as the Forefathers, did not become known as the Pilgrim Fathers until two centuries after their arrival. A responsive chord was struck with the discovery of a manuscript of Gov. William Bradford referring to the “saints” who had left Holland as “pilgrimes.” At a commemorative bicentennial celebration in 1820, orator Daniel Webster used the phrase Pilgrim Fathers, and the term became common usage thereafter.” Source:

Interesting that the Pilgrims never would have been able to get to America without about 70 investors via the Merchant Adventurers wool business!
