Görlitz ... in 10min durch eine historische Stadt
Die Stadt Görlitz ist die östlichste Stadt Deutschlands und die Größte in der Oberlausitz.
Görlitz liegt an der Neiße, die seit 1945 die Grenze zu Polen bildet.
Seit 1998 gibt es eine Bindung mit Zgorzelec und damit eine Europastadt.
Görlitz blieb im Zweiten Weltkrieg von Zerstörungen fast völlig verschont. Auch profitierte die Stadt davon, das in der ehemaligen DDR keine Mittel für den Abriss alter Häuser bereit standen.
So konnten nicht nur die historische Altstadt, sondern auch über 4000 Häuser der Stadt Görlitz sehenswert restauriert werden.
Dieses einzigartige Stadtbild machte Görlitz zu einem beliebten Filmdrehstandort, weshalb es auch „Görliwood“ genannt wird.

Visit the Grand Budapest Hotel in Görlitz!
: You can visit the Grand Budapest Hotel in Görliwood, aka Görlitz (well, the film set, anyway) with us now!
Görlitz remained almost undamaged during the Second World War and with its 4000 or so historical buildings spanning 500 years it provides a periodic atmosphere and a lot of inspiration for many filmmakers. We travelled to Görliwood to see what the attraction is, and to check out the locations for the many films shot in the atmospheric town.
You're not guaranteed to meet film stars if you go there, but there's a good chance, as it's been a favourite location for many films. If you'd been there in 2012-3 you might have bumped into Bill Murray buying a bratwurst or Ralph Fiennes and Willem Defoe enjoying a quiet drink, as Wes Anderson was shooting his Oscar-winning Grand Budapest Hotel around the town, but especially in the Art Nouveau Görlitzer Warenhaus Department Store.
The department store is deserted now (although apparently there are plans to reopen it soon) but we managed to get inside and explore. It was quite a trip to wander around the former film set, working out where the various scenes took place!
Well, it may not look like much now, but the 100 year old Görlitzer Warenhaus - that's a department store - was in fact the inside of the Grand Hotel Budapest in the film.
And although it's shut and deserted, we're going inside!
The Warenhaus last operated as a department store in 2009, when its owners went bankrupt. Since then, it's been used a few times in films, most notably as the interior of the Grand Budapest Hotel in the 2013 film.
After that, it's basically been empty, except for the occasional tourist or special interest group that have been shown round.
There are actually plans to open it as a department store once again, quite detailed ones. However, it has been delayed for a few years, now 2017, maybe 2018 - let's hope that they make it!
Now here's a shot of the main staircase from the second level.
Look at that detail on the banisters. Imagine walking down here in the old days. Quite resplendent, really.
Here you see the pillars on the top level. There's quite a lot of detail on there, and look at those three characters up there at the top; I'm not sure who they're supposed to be.
Now let's have a look at the beautiful Art Deco ceiling, which was restored in 1985.
If you look carefully here, you can see the dates and in fact the names, of the people involved in the restoration that have been put into the glass. The special technique which was employed is characterised by the use of enamel colour which is baked into the material at a temperature of 600°C, causing an effect as in a graphic.
Well, here we are on the top level, behind all those pillars.
Look at the detail along this. Quite spectacular, really; crude, but effective in a kind of way.
Anyway, we'll look round here. This is where the offices of the film people involved in the Grand Budapest Hotel were originally.
We'll look over, down into the main area, and that magnificent Art Deco roof. All three levels, and the chandeliers. They're not actually the original chandeliers, they were replaced in mid 1990.
And here's another shot of that magnificent, almost M.C. Escher-type staircase!
Well, here we are on the main staircase. It's a bit dodgy, I'll try and walk down. It's not Steadycam, but there you are, you can't have everything! A bit lumpy, I'll try and do better next time...

Der steinerne Globus wurde 1961 als Symbol für den 15. Meridian (15. Längengrad östl. von Greenwich) im Stadtpark Görlitz errichtet. Die genaue Stelle des 15. Meridians liegt aber 137 Meter weiter östlich kurz vor der Neiße. Der 15. Meridian in Görlitz definiert die Mitteleuropäische Zeit (MEZ), die u.a. in Deutschland gilt.
Educational estate Schmochtitz St. Benno | Schlösserland Sachsen
The history of the Schmochtitz St. Benno educational estate ( near Bautzen in Upper Lusatia dates back to the 12th century - when the Via Regia probably ran through here. Between 1925 and 1945, the Catholic Church established a seminary until Gut Schmochtitz was completely destroyed in the last days of the war. Since the reconstruction of the manor house, it has been an educational and conference center of the diocese of Dresden-Meissen. Gut Schmochtitz has 140 beds in 80 rooms and eleven vacation apartments. With its paradise garden and rococo park, it is part of the Via Sacra, which connects art treasures in the border triangle.

Görlitz ist das grösste zusammen hängende Flächendenkmal Europas.
Von der Fussgängerbrücke nach Polen hat man einen sehr schönen Blick auf die Pfarrkirche St. Peter und das Waidhaus, diese Ansicht sollte man sich bei einem Stadtrundgang nicht entgehen lassen.
Unbedingt besichtigen sollte man den Untermarkt und den Obermarkt von Görlitz.

Park Hotel Görlitz - kurzer Blick in die Zimmer
Park Hotel Görlitz - Ein kleiner Hoteltipp. Ich war beruflich während der Corona Zeit im Park Hotel in Görlitz.
Das Hotel liegt sehr schön zentral an der Neiße. In zehn Minuten ist man zu Fuß an der Friedensbrücke und im Zentrum der Stadt.
Ein sehr empfehlenswertes Hotel. Die Sauna war zwar für dieses Mal nicht in Betrieb, aus gegebenen Anlass - ist jedoch vorhanden!

Görlitz, Deutschlands östlichste Stadt, ist ein richtiges Schmuckstück. In der Altstadt steht zum Beispiel das älteste Renaissance-Haus in Deutschland. Ein so genanntes Hallenhaus. Warum der Wohnsitzs eines wohlhabenden Kaufmanns immer zwei Hallen hatte und warum auf der Kirchturmuhr ein Gesicht prangt, das zu jeder vollen Minute gähnt, verrate ich im Video.
Wer den Film „Grand Budapest Hotel“ kennt, dem wird das ehemalige Warenhaus von Görlitz bekannt vorkommen. Es wurde für den Film zur Hotel-Kulisse umgewidmet. Görlitz gilt immer wieder als beliebter Drehort für Filme.

Germany
The Federal Republic of Germany is situated in the heart of Europe. It has nine neighbors: Denmark in the north, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the west, Switzerland and Austria in the south, and the Czech Republic as well as Poland in the east. This central location has been more pronounced since 3rd October 1990, when Germany was reunited. The Federal Republic is more than ever a link between East and West, but also between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. As an integral part of the European Union and NATO, Germany is a bridge to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
The Federal Republic of Germany covers an area of about 357,000 square kilometers. The longest distance from north to south as the crow flies is 876 kilometers, from west to east 640 kilometers. Its extremities are List on the island of Sylt in the north, Deschka, Saxony, in the east, Oberstdorf, Bavaria, in the south, and Selfkant, North Rhine-Westphalia, in the west. The total length of the country's borders is 3,758 kilometers.
Germany has a population of about 82.0 million, the largest in Europe after the Russian Federation, followed by the United Kingdom (58.9 million), France (58.5 million) and Italy (57.5 million). In size, however, Germany is smaller than France (544,000 square kilometers) and Spain (506,000 square kilometers).
Germany has an extraordinary variety of charming landscapes. Low and high mountain ranges intermingle with upland plains, terrace country, hilly regions and lakelands as well as wide, open lowlands. From north to south Germany is divided into five regions with different topographical features: the North German Plain, the Central Upland Range, the terrace panorama of the southwest, the Alpine foothills in the south and the Bavarian Alps.
In the north are dry, sandy lowlands with many lakes as well as heaths and moors. There is also the fertile land stretching southward to the Central Upland Range. These lowland penetrations include the Lower Rhenish Bight, the Westphalian Bight and the SaxonThuringian Bight. The marshes along the North Sea coast extend as far as the geest. Characteristic features of the Baltic Sea coastline are in Schleswig-Holstein the fjords, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the lakes and the counterbalancing coastline. The main islands in the North Sea are the East Frisian Islands, among them Borkum and Norderney, the North Frisian Islands of Amrum, Fohr and Sylt (and the Halligen), as well as Helgoland in the Helgoland Bight. Situated in the Baltic Sea are the islands of Rugen, Hiddensee and Fehmarn. Some parts of the Baltic coast have flat, sandy shores; others have steep cliffs. Between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea lies the low-hill country called Holsteinische Schweiz (Holstein Switzerland).
The Central Upland Range divides northern Germany from the south. The central Rhine valley and the Hessian depressions serve as the natural north-south traffic arteries. The Central Uplands include the Rhenish Schist Massif (Hunsruck, Eifel, Taunus, Westerwald, Bergisches Land and Sauerland), the Hessian Mountains, and the Weser and Leine Mountains in western and central Germany. Right in the heart of Germany are the Harz Mountains. Toward the east are the Rhon Mountains, the Bavarian Forest, the Upper Palatinate Forest, the Fichtel Hills, the Franconian Forest, the Thuringian Forest and the Ore Mountains.
The terrace landscape of the Central Uplands in the southwest embraces the upper Rhine valley with the adjacent mountain ranges of the Black Forest, the Oden Forest and Spessart, the Palatinate Forest with the Haardt, and the Swabian-Franconian terrace country with the Alb.
In a narrow valley between Bingen and Bonn the river Rhine, the main north-south axis, slices through the Rhenish Schist Massif, whose highland areas are less densely populated than the sheltered wine-growing areas on both sides of the Rhine valley which are very popular with tourists.
The Alpine foothills embrace the Swabian-Bavarian highlands with their hills and large lakes in the south, broad gravel plains, the hilly landscape of Lower Bavaria, and the Danube valley. Characteristic features of this region are the moors, dome-shaped hill ranges and lakes (Chiemsee, Starnberger See) as well as small villages.
The German part of the Alps between Lake Constance and Berchtesgaden is limited to the Allgau, the Bavarian Alps and the Berchtesgaden Alps. In this Alpine world lie picturesque lakes such as the Konigssee near Berchtesgaden and popular tourist resorts such as Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Mittenwald.
