The Three Top Reasons You Can’t Miss the Piana degli Albanesi Village

Piana degli Albanesi, or simply Piana, is a tiny mountain village that is just a 40-minute ride away from Palermo center. It is really famous for the three major reasons that I’m going to tell you about in this video.

If you don’t know me, my name is Nico. I am a 100% purebred Sicilian and the founder of Wearepalermo.com and The Sicilian Way, the coolest travel guide to Palermo.

Let’s get started!

Piana degli Albanesi, the most important center of the Albanians of Sicily. Arbëreshëvet.

Piana degli Albanesi, in the province of Palermo, is the most important center of the Albanians in Sicily and the most populous Arbëreshë settlement in Italy. In the Albanian language the town is called Arbëreshëvet.
Located on a plateau, the Fusha plain, at the foot of Monte Pizzuta, on which the lake of the same name of Piana degli Albanesi extends, the town offers many points of interest and certainly deserves a careful visit.

The local community has maintained its culture, traditions and language unchanged over the centuries, which is still commonly spoken and taught in schools across the town today. You can get in touch with this reality, visiting the city and getting closer to the locals. The history of the Albanians in Sicily (and in the rest of southern Italy) is very interesting and dates back to the Ottoman invasion.
Furthermore, Piana degli Albanesi offers an interesting urban layout with a clear late-medieval matrix in which Byzantine origins are mixed with the more recent Sicilian Baroque.
The numerous Greek Orthodox churches and monumental fountains scattered all over the irregular plot of the historic center testify to this.
Strolling through the maze of alleys, stairways (shkallet) and neighborhoods (gjitoni), the common spaces between the buildings, discovering sudden passages under barrel vaults and unexpected arches, stopping to observe the votive shrines or the testimonies of the Arbereshe tradition, is a unique and fascinating experience.
And for those looking for nature, the Piana degli Albanesi lake is a protected oasis entrusted to the WWF and included among the hiking trails of the Sentiero Italia that retrace the ancient mountain communication routes. Absolutely not to be missed.
Not to be missed are the cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi, among the best in Sicily. Strictly made with ricotta, freshly prepared by the skilled hands of local pastry chefs, they are a delight for the palate. You can't leave Piana degli Albanesi without trying at least one.

Piana degli Albanesi - Albanian heritage in Sicily and great cannoli!

#sicily #sicilianfood #albany

Hello everyone,
this time we are glad to show you Piana degli Albanesi, another village in the province of Palermo.

The official name of the town was Piana dei Greci until 1941. This village is situated on a mountainous plateau and encircled by high mountains, on the eastern side of the imposing Mount Pizzuta, the city, which is mirrored on a large lake. Piana degli Albanesi is 24 km far from Palermo, the capital of Sicily.

Piana degli Albanesi was founded in the late 15th century by a large group of Albanian refugees coming from the Balkans during the conquest of the latter by the Ottoman Empire. The exodus began after the death of Skanderbeg, who successfully fought Ottoman armies for more than two decades.

The town is the most important center of the Albanians of Sicily, as well as the largest and most populous colony of Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian or Albanians of Italy) and it is the episcopal see of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, constituency of the Italo-Albanian Church whose jurisdiction covers all Albanians of Sicily who practice the Byzantine rite.

The community, after five centuries from its foundation, has maintained many ethnic elements of Albanian culture like language, religious ritual, traditional costumes, music and folklore.

Piana degli Albanesi boasts a great local gastronomy. It offers dishes and desserts typical of the Sicilian-Albanian tradition, in which one can note the presence of elements deriving from the Balkans and the Mediterranean. The delicious bread and cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi are very popular in the entire Sicily!

I Found THE WORLD'S BEST CANNOLI in Palermo, Sicily

I came to Sicily first and foremost for, well, the sun. I can’t lie. Berlin can make a balled-up postcard from 1970s Florida look absolutely euphoric in January. Sicily, I knew, would provide a reprieve from my seasonal depressive dysfunction.

That aside, high up there on the list was to find the world’s best cannoli.

I buonissimi cannoli di Piana degli Albanesi

Il buonissimo cannolo di Piana degli Albanesi

The Belice Nature Reserve, Sicily

Rising near Piana degli Albanesi in the mountains above Palermo, the Belice River flows for nearly 80km, wending its way southwards across western Sicily, until, eventually, its waters mingle with the salty depths of the Mediterranean. To the west lies the archaeological site of Selinunte, to the east, the seaside resort of Porto Palo. In between is a 3km stretch of sandy beach, dunes, and coastal flora: the Riserva Naturale del Foce del Belice.

Instituted in 1984, the Belice reserve is a wonderful place to visit in all seasons. Beach lovers will always find space on its generous sands during the spring, summer, and autumn, and swimmers will appreciate the cleanliness of its waters. In the cooler months, it’s a great spot for a brisk walk, following the disused Castelvetrano-Sciacca railway line while working up an appetite for a long lunch at La Pineta, a traditional seafood restaurant at the western extremity of the beach.

For nature lovers there’s also plenty to see. The dunes alternate with depressions, which form saltwater pools when the tide comes in. A vibrant, hardy range of flora thrives on the sandy, saline terrain, including sea daffodils, sea rocket, wild asparagus, lentisk, and tamarisk. On the fertile banks of the river delta grow towering reeds and bullrushes, while carob trees, dwarf palms, and the occasional pine rise discreetly above the dunes.

A section of the beach is given over to lidos, providing sunshades and loungers, but most is left to its own natural devices, an aspect appreciated by its most illustrious, if occasional, visitors, loggerhead sea turtles, who find the reserve an ideal spot in which to lay their eggs.

5 Crucial Things to Know Before Going Sightseeing in Palermo

Hi Nico here!

Palermo, like a beautiful rose, has some stinging characteristics that you need to know so you can come back from your trip with stories to share instead of a collection of swear words.

Let’s see these 5 thorns you should be aware of:

1. Our cultural heritage is overwhelming
2. Information panels are non-existent
3. Websites like Wikipedia don’t help
4. The staff is never helpful
5. Don’t completely trust an attraction’s opening hours

Places to see in ( Palermo - Italy ) Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio - La Martorana

Places to see in ( Palermo - Italy ) Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio - La Martorana

The Martorana Also Co-Cathedral of St. Mary of the Admiral is the seat of the parish of San Nicolò dei Greci, a Co-cathedral overlooking the Piazza Bellini in Palermo, Sicily, southern Italy. The church belongs to the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi of the Italo-Albanian Catholic Church, a diocese which includes the Albanian communities in Sicily who officiate the liturgy according to the Byzantine Rite in the ancient Greek language. The church is characterized by the multiplicity of styles that meet, because, with the succession of centuries, it was enriched by various other tastes in art, architecture and culture. Today, it is, in fact, as a church-historical monument, the result of multiple transformations, also subject to protection.

The name Ammiraglio (admiral) derives from the founder of the church, the Greek admiral and principal minister of King Roger II of Sicily, George of Antioch. The foundation charter of the church (which was initially Eastern Orthodox), in Greek and Arabic, is preserved and dates to 1143; construction may already have begun at this point. The church had certainly been completed by the death of George in 1151, and he and his wife were interred in the narthex. In 1184 the Arab traveller Ibn Jubayr visited the church, and later devoted a significant portion of his description of Palermo to its praise, describing it as the most beautiful monument in the world. After the Sicilian Vespers of 1282 the island's nobility gathered in the church for a meeting that resulted in the Sicilian crown being offered to Peter III of Aragon.

In 1193-94, a convent of Benedictine nuns was founded on adjacent property by Eloisa Martorana. In 1433-34, under the rule of King Alfonso of Aragon, this convent absorbed the church, which has since then been commonly known as La Martorana. The nuns extensively modified the church between the 16th century and the 18th century, making major changes to the structure and the interior decoration.

The nuns of the Martorana were famous for their moulded marzipan, which they made in the form of various fruits. Although the convent no longer exists, frutta di Martorana are still one of Palermo's most famous and distinctive foodstuffs. In 1935 Benito Mussolini returned the church to the control of Palermo's Greek Orthodox community. Today, it is used by the Italo-Greek Catholic Church for their services and shares cathedral status with the church of San Demetrio in Piana degli Albanesi.

( Palermo - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Palermo . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Palermo - Italy
