Laos is a Southeast Asian country traversed by the Mekong River and known for mountainous terrain, French colonial architecture, hill tribe settlements and Buddhist monasteries. Vientiane, the capital, is the site of the That Luang monument, where a reliquary reportedly houses the Buddha’s breastbone, plus the Patuxai war memorial and Talat Sao (Morning Market), a complex jammed with food, clothes and craft stalls.

10 Best Experiences in Laos according to Rough Guides

10 Best Experiences in Laos according to Rough Guides

10. Vieng Xai
Vieng Xai is a district and town in Hua Phan Province. The biggest attraction of the town is the caves. The former Pathet Lao Revolutionary headquarters of Vieng Xai sit in a striking valley of fertile hills and limestone cliffs riddled with caves, several of which were used to shelter PL officers during the second Indochina War.

9. Nam Ou
The Nam Ou is one of the most important rivers of Laos. It runs 448 km from Phongsaly Province to Luang Prabang Province. Along with the Mekong, the Nam Ou is the only natural channel suitable for large-draft boat transportation. Near its confluence with the Mekong are the Pak Ou Caves, famous for their Buddha statues.

8. Trekking
Rugged mountain forests set the scene for hikers seeking to explore the remote hill villages of the north.

7. Vang Vieng
Once little more than a bus stop on the long haul between Vientiane at the Thai border and the World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng has managed to become a destination in its own right and a popular stop on the unofficial Banana Pancake Trail. Still not much more than three streets and a bus station, the main attractions are the river, laid back countryside, and cave-filled rock formations.

6. Lao food
Lao cuisine is the cuisine of Laos, which is distinct from other Southeast Asian cuisines. The staple food of the Lao is steamed sticky rice, which is eaten by hand. In fact, the Lao eat more sticky rice than any other people in the world. Galangal, lemongrass and padaek (Lao fish sauce) are important ingredients.

5. Luang Prabang
Set at the confluence of two rivers that almost surround the town, and beneath a temple-topped hill, Luang Prabang is a wonderful patchwork of traditional Lao wooden houses and hints of European architecture, reminders of when Laos was part of the French colony of Indochine.

4. Waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau
The Bolaven Plateau is an elevated region in southern Laos. The plateau is crossed by several rivers and has many scenic waterfalls. The name Bolaven makes reference to the Laven ethnic group which has historically dominated the region. The most popular places visited by tourists are the waterfalls in the region, the villages of the ethnic minorities, and other geopolitical areas of interest.

3. Plain of Jars
The Plain of Jars is a megalithic archaeological landscape in Laos. These stone jars appear in clusters, ranging from a single or a few to several hundred jars at lower foothills surrounding the central plain and upland valleys. The Plain of Jars is dated to the Iron Age (500 BC to AD 500) and is one of the most important sites for studying Southeast Asian prehistory.

2. Phongsali
It is the northernmost among provincial capitals in Laos opposite Attapeu in the south. In the centre of the town are houses built in Yunnanese style with ornate wooden fronts. A 400-year-old tea plantation is located about 18 kilometers away in the village of Ban Koma, which according to some tea experts has some of the oldest tea trees in the world.

1. A slow boat down the Mekong
The lifeline of this landlocked nation, the Mekong figures in every visit to Laos, supplying the fish for dinner, a stunning array of sunsets and a route to travel along.

Trekking in Laos - 3 Day Hilltribes Trek near Phongsali, Laos.

Trekking in Laos - 3 Day Ethnic Hilltribe Trek near Phongsali, Laos.
This trek is one of my favorites. We were only a small group of 3 which turned out to be an ideal number. It was obvious that the locals had not seen too many white faces before. The first night was spent in a family home in an Akha Eupa village. The second night was spent in the headmans home in an Akha Loma village. The girls dressed up in the first few photos are Akha Mochi.
.The music is by Khan Khan with a song called DiDa made famous by the tv show Beijing Love Story.

Hmong Village, Laos, people & Children in Hmong

Hmong villages in Laos are one of the best cultural treasures protected that appeal to the international guests who want to learn the culture of the ethnic minority group in an authentic way. “Land of a Million Elephants” has three main groups of ethnic minority namely the Hmong, the Khmu, and the Lao Lum. In particular, this post can ignite your spark of interest in the traditional way of life in the so-called Hmong village.

Most of the Hmong people are in the north of Laos

It’s uneasy to trace the history of the Hmong people, but scientists believe that this group used to migrate from the Mongolia Steppes to Southeast Asia. Around half a million of the Hmong live in the mountainous areas in the north of the country. Particularly in Luang Prabang, there are various little Hmong villages to get around. One of the most notable sites is Long Lao Mai Village, which takes a 30-minute drive from the UNESCO City.

The Hmong people follow animism and shamanism

You will not see the pagodas or any Buddhist sites when visiting a Laos Hmong Village because they practice animism and shamanism. In that sense, Long Lao Mai Village in Luang Prabang has a spirit area for practicing magic, and the tourists are not allowed to enter that area. As usual, these villages will be led by the old villagers (the headmen) who master their traditions, rituals, and principles.

The Hmong houses are open for homestay

Lots of foreigners have experienced the homestay in Laos by staying overnight at the remote Hmong houses. The trip also covers some interesting and different things like taking shower in public, having meals with the local hosts, and sleeping in the minority houses. Some of the Khmer food will be served during the family mealtime, and you will get chances to get to know the family you stay with. The discovery of culture, history, and Hmong food makes your journey full of stories to write down. The homestay with Hmong ethnic minority group in Laos lets you meet some of the most amiable people on this earth. This is time to build friendship and exchange culture.

The Hmong celebrate their New Year on December 13

It is lucky that you can attend the Hmong New Year Festival on December 13 upon your arrival. On the festive days, people will wear their colorful Hmong traditional dresses and cook their traditional food for the celebrations. To celebrate the beginning of the New Year, the entire village will together kill kitchen and cook it to serve everybody at night. The dinner also has eggs, as a tradition. The festival might last up to 10 days when the locals are all happy, which inspires and cheer up the visitors.

Trek to the Hmong Villages and See Pristine Tourist Attractions in Laos

Often, the trek to the off-the-beaten-track Hmong villages includes time for discovering the nearby tourist spots. Namely, trekking to Long Lao Mai Hmong Village in Luang Prabang has the highlight of the enthralling Kuang Si Waterfall in which picnic, nature sightseeing, and Nature Photography are all amazing. Even the birds’ songs or the sounds of the waterfall can make you feel like entering the paradisiac land, without the city madness.

So if you want a different way to travel to Laos, think of trekking to the hidden Hmong Village, and Long Lao Mai in Luang Prabang is a great recommendation. The ecotourism, cultural discovery, and homestay experiences in the ethnic minority houses will turn to be the distinctive stories for you to tell others and save for yourself until old age.

The HIGHEST City In Laos | PHONGSALY ????????

The Final video of our Phongsaly series here in Laos started with eating some delicious Yunnanese Chinese style noodles which were so strange but quite tasty for 20,000 laos kip.

We took a little walk through the Chinese Old quarter again to show how beautiful this place is, it's like going back in time. When we reached the upper lake here in Phongsaly I was just taken back by how stunning this place really is.

The sun started to set so we decided to climb the highest hill in Phongsaly, Mount Phoufa at a height of 1600 metres high. The walk up through the jungle was a little difficult in the heat but boy was it worth it.

At the top we reached a small temple and a Viewpoint over the entire city of Phongsaly and surrounding mountains. It was seriously one of the most incredible views I have seen in Southeast Asia.

While at the top we tried some of the green lao whiskey that is famous here in Phongsaly, this stuff was so so strong and knocked my socks off.

Phongsaly is the most beautiful place in all Laos, and being so hard to reach its no wonder tourists do not visit. This is the final frontier of Laos for sure ????????

Walking around Phongsali city, Northern Laos

The road to Phongsali

The road to Phongsali really is a tough one. From Oudomxai to Phongsali by motorbike it takes about 11 hours because of the condition of the road. Over the coming years, it may well improve as they start to seal it. But as of now it's bad. This is our experience.
