Khibiny for 4 days (July 2017)
Short trekking in the vicinities of Kirovsk. Radial hiking from the MSU research station to Aiquaivenchorr and Pachvumchorr. The year 2017 was extremely snowy, so we were not able to reach more remote parts of the mountains.
Khibiny are low (max.1201m) peneplenized mountains with distinctive glacial landforms. The hiking is wild, no prepared routes, so you will definitely feel the taste of discovery there. The main hub for travellers is a nearby city Apatity with its airport (connections to Moscow and St.Petersburg) and a railway station. Kirovsk was built in 1920s when precious apatite and nepheline were found in the Khibiny massif and experienced a fast growth. After the fall of the USSR the city lost almost a half of its population. However, now Kirovsk is reviving due to the influence of Phosagro company and the development of tourism, especially skiing resort.
Main tourist attractions: Apatit exhibition centre (history of mining in the area with a fine collection of minerals and rocks), the northenmost botanical garden in Russia, museum of Venedikt Erofeev (author of Moscow - Petushki), Snow village, ski resort Big Wood.

Hammer and sickle COMMUNIST monument in Shusha, Nagorno Karabakh SOVIET
Shusha (Azerbaijani: Şuşa; Armenian: Շուշի, romanized: Shushi) is a city and the centre of the Shusha District of Azerbaijan. Situated at an altitude of 1,400–1,800 metres (4,600–5,900 ft) in the Karabakh mountains, Shusha was a mountain recreation resort in the Soviet era.
According to some sources the town of Shusha was founded in 1752 by Panah Ali Khan. From the mid-18th century to 1822 Shusha was the capital of the Karabakh Khanate. The town became one of the cultural centers of the South Caucasus after the Russian conquest of the Caucasus region in the first half of the 19th century over Qajar Iran. Over time, it became a city and a home to many Azerbaijani intellectuals, poets, writers and especially, musicians.
Other sources suggest that Shusha served as a town and an ancient fortress in the Armenian principality of Varanda during the Middle Ages and through the 18th century. It was one of the two main Armenian cities of the Transcaucasus and the center of a self-governing Armenian principality from medieval times through the 1750s. It also had religious and strategic importance to the Armenians, housing the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, the church of Kanach Zham, two other churches, a monastic convent, and serving (along with Lachin district to the west) as a land link to Armenia.
Throughout modern history, Shusha mainly fostered a mixed Armenian Azerbaijani population. Following the Shusha massacre in 1920 by Azerbaijani forces, the Armenian half of the population of Shusha was mostly killed or expelled, and Shusha reduced to a town with a dominant Azerbaijani population. After the capture of Shusha in 1992 by Armenian forces during First Nagorno Karabakh War, its population diminished dramatically again and became exclusively Armenian.
Between May 1992 and November 2020, Shusha was under the de facto control of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh and administered as part of its Shushi Province. On 8 November 2020, Azerbaijani forces retook the city during the 2020 Nagorno Karabakh War following a three-day long battle.
Shusha literally means glass, and derives from Persian Shīsha. According to the Oxford Concise Dictionary of World Place-Names, when Iranian ruler Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar approached the town with his army, he reportedly told to Ibrahim Khalil Khan:
God is pouring stones on thy head. Sit ye not then in thy fortress of glass.
Panahabad (City of Panah), Shusha's previous name, was a tribute to Panah Ali Khan, the first ruler of the Karabakh Khanate.
According to Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary the town's name comes from a nearby village Shushikent, which literally means Shusha village in Azerbaijani language.
The hammer and sickle (Unicode: ☭) (Russian Серп и молот Sickle and Hammer) is a symbol represent proletarian solidarity – a union between the peasantry and working-class. It was first adapted during the Russian Revolution, the hammer representing the workers and the sickle representing the peasants.
After World War I (which Russia withdrew from in 1917) and the Russian Civil War, the hammer and sickle became more widely used as a symbol for labor within the Soviet Union and for international proletarian unity. Hammer and sickle taken up by many communist movements around the world, some with local variations. Today, even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the hammer and sickle remains commonplace in Russia and other former union republics, but its display is prohibited in some other former communist countries as well as in countries where communism is banned by law. The hammer and sickle also remains commonplace in countries like Vietnam and China.
An alternative example is the combination of a hammer and a plough, with the same meaning. In Ireland, the symbol of the plough remains in use. The Starry Plough banner was originally used by the Irish Citizen Army, a socialist republican workers' militia. James Connolly, co-founder of the Irish Citizen Army with Jack White, said the significance of the banner was that a free Ireland would control its own destiny from the plough to the stars. A sword is forged into the plough to symbolise end of war with the establishment of a Socialist International. This was unveiled in 1914 and flown by the Irish Citizen Army during the 1916 Easter Rising
In 1917, Vladimir Lenin and Anatoly Lunacharsky held a competition to create a Soviet emblem. The winning was a hammer and sickle on top of a globe in rays of the sun, surrounded by a wreath of grain and under a five-pointed star, with the inscription proletarians of the world, unite! in 6 languages (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani)

Дорогие друзья, я продолжаю свой рассказ о Путешествии выходного дня в Покровский край, который стал для нас настоящим открытием 2021 туристического года! И не только для нас: Покровский край стал победителем конкурса “ТОП-1000 культурных и туристических брендов России” в категории Арт-кластер!
Наша 10-ая, заключительная остановка - Свято-Введенский Островной женский монастырь.

Покровская Свято-Введенская Островная пустынь — православный женский (в прошлом мужской) монастырь. Подворье Александровской епархии Русской православной церкви.
Расположен на острове посреди Вятского (ныне — Введенского) озера, в 4 км от города Покрова Владимирской области.
Монастырь основан в самом конце XVII в. иноками Антониевой пустыни Сергием и Тимофеем, удалившимся на остров Вятского озера и поставившими там деревянную часовню и деревянную же келью. Уединение, по преданию, длилось недолго — о «старцах» пошёл слух по округе и начали приходить желающие стать насельниками новой пустыни. Иноки принимали всех.
К началу нового, XVIII в., островная братия настолько умножилась, что было принято решение просить о благословении на постройку собственного островного храма. Что и было сделано.
В XIX столетии монастырь прирастал имуществом и богател.
Павел I пожаловал пустыни сенные покосы и мельницу на реке Мележе при деревне Новой (ныне — деревня Глазуны Фряновского городского поселения). Мельница сдавалась монахами в аренду и приносила доходу 200 руб. в год. В 1831 г. княгиня Татьяна Михайловна Прозоровская, владевшая селом Ивановским в 7-и км от обители, передала монастырю 20 десятин земли на ближайшем берегу озера...
В 1918 году Свято-Введенский монастырь был закрыт — имущество национализировали. Островные здания и сама территория острова использовались сначала под дом престарелых и инвалидов, затем — под детский дом. В 1932 году в бывшем монастыре обосновалась женская подростковая колония, с 1935 года переданная в ведение МВД и поменявшая в связи с этим название на «трудовую воспитательную колонию». В 1940 году всю оставшуюся монастырскую собственность перевезли в Покров и начали перестраивать здания. Срубили купола и подкупольные барабаны, во Введенском храме устроили школу для заключённых девиц, а в Никольской церкви — клуб и кинозал...
16 сентября 1991 года исполком Владимирского областного совета народных депутатов принял решение «О передаче в ведение Владимирской епархии зданий храмов и монастырей, расположенных на территории области».
На Рождество Христово 1995 года в Никольской церкви прошла Первая служба…
