Mauritius Travel Guide - Paradise on Earth

Mauritius Travel Guide - Paradise on Earth

Mauritius is a small, multi-cultural island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, NorthEast of Reunion and southeast of the Seychelles. Mauritius is rightly famed for its sapphire waters, powder-white beaches and luxury resorts. But there’s so much more attraction to Mauritius than the beach, and it's the kind of place that rewards even the smallest attempts at exploration. There’s hiking in the forested and mountainous interior and world-class diving and snorkelling offshore.

The island of Mauritius was first discovered by Arab sailors, at some time in the 9th century, the exact date is unknown. At that time the island was uninhabited and covered in a dense forest. The Arab sailors were not interested in settling on the island which they named Dina Arobi or Dinarobin. Diogo Fernandes Pereira, a Portuguese sailor found the island in 1505 and decided to give it the name of Cerne. However, the Portuguese did not settle permanently on the island either.

The first to colonise the island were the Dutch. They took possession of the island in 1598. The Dutch settlers landed on a bay in the south-eastern part of the island which was named Warwyck Haven after the commander VanWarwyck, the bay is now known as Grand Port. Although Mauritius doesn't have a huge Chinese population, the Chinese Lunar New Year is still celebrated as an official public holiday with red colours and firecrackers predominating.

Mauritius does not have an official language, but the main language of government is English. As such, all government administrative documents are in the Commonwealth variety of English, which is also used as the prime medium of instruction in public schools. Mauritius has only two seasons, winter and summer. There is not much temperature difference between the two seasons of the year. The climate on the central plateau is cooler than on the coastal areas.

Must-do day trip in Mauritius - Bois Cheri, Ganga Talao, Black river gorges, waterfalls

We do a great trip to the South of Mauritius. A must-do trip and best if you can do it on your last day as a trip to the airport. Starting with tea at Bois Cheri, a visit to Grand Bassin or Ganga Talao temple, then off to natural stuff with waterfalls and views and end up eating traditional Mauritian food at Palais de Barbizon. Add this one to your bucket list for sure.

Best Hikes in Mauritius

Mauritius is more than just captivating beaches, turquoise lagoons and brilliant cultures colliding together. The island’s nature is incredible, so come and explore soaring peaks covered with forest, National Parks and astounding landscapes.

We caught up with vlogger Will Tevs to reveal the top 5 best hikes in Mauritius for adventure, waterfalls and, of course, amazing views.

Petite Riviere Loop Travel Guide | LUNENBURG NOVA SCOTIA | Dashboard Living

We LOVE planning our road trips out before we arrive. Yes, it's fun to leave some time for spontaneous exploring but we've found we see a LOT more if we plan out an itinerary before we go.

Hiking Vlog to Black River Peak in Mauritius

Awesome hiking day to Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire/Black River Peak, the highest in Mauritius at 828m high. Ever wondered how the full hike looks like? Have a peek at the trail, the scenery and of course the amazing view here.
Led by Marsloin Team, we started this moderate level hike at Black River Nature Reserve and finished at Chamarel in around 8 hours.
The trail begins on flat ground with rivulets on the sides and gradually go steeper, with places requiring ropes. Most of the trail is shaded with trees which also offer branches to grab onto. Plenty of red goyaves de Chine (strawberry guava) to munch on the way.
Walking 10km and climbing 828m later, we are a bunch of weary, sweaty, hungry hikers with a healthier heart and a happier soul.
Mauritius is a wonderful island full of beauty, charm and fun adventures just waiting to be explored.
May our future trails be crooked, muddy, steep, and lead us to more awesome views and hidden treasures in Mauritius!

Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (Little Black River Peak)

#mauritius #mauritiusisland #travel #seetheworld #pitondelapetiterivierenoire #wheretonext

Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (Little Black River Peak) is the highest mountain on the island of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean.

Now, let's chat about the big deal in Mauritius - the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, which translates to the Little Black River Peak. It's the granddaddy of all the mountains on this Indian Ocean island. Rising up in the Rivière Noire District, it reaches a jaw-dropping 828 meters (that's 2,717 feet) above sea level. You'll find it hanging out in the Black River mountain range.

Oh, and there are a couple of other mountain ranges in this paradise. The Moka-Port Louis range boasts the Pieter Both (at 820 meters) and Le Pouce (standing tall at 811 meters) mountains, which are the second and third-highest peaks, respectively. They might have more street cred, but let's not forget our star of the show in the southwest - the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire.

If you're up for an adventure, there are a bunch of paths leading to the summit. The most common one starts from Plaine Champagne, but you can also take routes from Chamarel or the Black River Gorges Visitors Centre. Once you're up there, you can kick back on a bench fittingly named Bench 828. Because who doesn't want to enjoy that epic view in style, right?

Sparkling like a gem in the southern Indian Ocean, Mauritius is an island nation, having a land area of 2,040 kilometers and is officially known as the Republic of Mauritius. Think Mauritius and your mind instantly conjures up images of powder white beaches and tropical palm trees. However, the country isn't just about beaches. If you can tear yourself away from the exotic sands for just sometime; Mauritius has a ton of activities, historical sights, and lush forests to offer to its visitors.

Leading the tourist attractions, Port Louis- the bustling capital of Mauritius, boasts of French colonial architecture and offers exciting shopping and entertainment venues. Grand Baie is also the amongst the main tourist attractions. Not to miss the Black River Gorges National Park, which is spread across an area of 16,244 hectares and is the best place to watch rare bird species and fauna. Another interesting spot is Chamarel- a village located in the district of Black River where people can see a dune with seven different colors. The dunes are also acknowledged as the 'Seven Colored Earth'. It's this uniqueness of the spot that makes it rather popular among tourists.

Home to some of the most luxurious hotels and resorts in the world, one of the most sought after in the country is The Residence Mauritius- an elegant resort with colonial-style architecture and a rich cultural landscape that will surprise you with its charm.

The cuisine of Mauritius is a blend of European, Chinese, and Indian food. Dishes from French cuisine have grown very popular in recent times. Another gastronomical delight is the street food in the area. You can find everything from fresh coconut water, chopped fruit covered in chili and tamarind marmalade, pickles wrapped in buttery bread, and Chinese fried noodles. As you walk around the labyrinth streets of the country, a nagging smell of the food coming from all corners will trigger your taste buds and inspire you to explore the best food options available.

A one shop stop for any vacation, Mauritius will entice the historian in you, excite the nature lover in you, and enthrall you with its streak of adventure!
