Devetashka Cave - Bulgaria (Full guide and drone footage)
Devetashka Cave - Bulgaria (Full guide and drone footage)

The Devetashka cave is one of the most beautiful and well-known caves in Bulgaria and is on the list of the most visited objectives by Romanians who choose to explore the north or center of this country.
It can also be on your list if you are going to Greece and just passing through Bulgaria, with a short detour before reaching Plevna.
The average height of the central hall of the cave is 60 meters, but in some places it even reaches 100 meters, which will make you feel in a completely different dimension, because the holes in the ceiling have a special visual effect .
The length of the cave is 2442 meters, which makes it one of the longest caves in the whole country. Besides the central hall, Devetashka has two more sections.
The section on the right is located in a drier and warmer area and has an entrance of 2.5 meters, forming a rectangular room of approximately 50 meters in length. At the end of this section, you will also find a small round room, locally called the Altar of the Devetashka cave.
The section on the left stretches for 2 kilometers, and here you will be able to see a small river that runs along the length of this part of the cave.
The Devetashka cave hosts specimens of 15 species of bats, and during the breeding season (in June and July), it is closed, precisely to protect the bat colonies and their reproduction process.

To be visited near Devetashka Cave

If you have decided to explore the surroundings of the Devetashka Cave, there are a number of attractions that you can consider.

The Krushuna waterfalls are at a distance of 16 kilometers from the Devetashka cave and are among the main tourist attractions of the area. You can find parking nearby, but also terraces and other facilities, and to reach the beautiful waterfalls, you have to follow the red route.

The Stalbitsata Cave can be visited after a 35-minute drive from Devetashka. It can be accessed by only one way, namely a rather generous row of steps that go down into its only gallery. The cave is very beautiful and has a rock at its end where you can see really special formations, but you have to be lucky with the sun, because the cave is not artificially lit, and the only source of light is the access point.

The town of Lovech is about 20 kilometers from Devetashka and also one of the places where you could spend a night before heading to other attractions in this area of Bulgaria.
You can visit the Lovech Fortress, but also the Covered Bridge or the Zoo here., but also the Covered Bridge or the Zoo here.

National Geographic Explore Bulgaria:

Prohodna cave - The eyes of God - Bulgaria

Hello! In this video, we will show you our walk to a natural wonder filled with good energy that one must visit. This is Pestera Prohodna or known as the eyes of God or god's eyes. It is located near Karlukovo and near the town of Lukovit, about 110 km from Sofia. There is free parking next to the cave, and the entrance to it is free.
From the very first moment, when we saw the cave with its enormous dimensions against which the human height seems insignificant, we understood what a great thing nature has created. When we entered the cave we immediately felt a lot of good energy, and the view was amazing. Due to its huge size, it is difficult to cover it all with the camera, even at low resolution, but we managed to capture as much as we could to show you and share with you this natural beauty. But one is on video, the other is live, the most important thing is the feeling, it cannot be conveyed with the camera, so we recommend that you definitely visit it if possible.

Bulgaria 1000 | Ep 3: Munții Rodopi - Din Cauza Zăpezii, Aproape am Renunțat! (Smolyan-Peshtera)

#bulgaria1000 #cicloturism #bicicleta

Enjoy!

Devetashka cave, top attraction in Bulgaria

Devetàshka cave (Bulgarian: Деветашката пещера) is a large karst cave around 7 km (4.3 mi) east of Letnitsa and 15 km (9.3 mi) northeast of Lovech, near the village of Devetaki on the east bank of the river Osam, in Bulgaria . The site has been continuously occupied by Paleo humans for tens of thousands of years, served as a shelter for various faunal species during extensive periods and is now home to nearly 30,000 bats.[1]

FROM KUKERI TRADITIONAL BULGARIAN RITUAL -PHOTOS FROM PESHTERA VILLAGE AND CITY OF ZEMEN

Kukeri (Bulgarian: кукери; singular: kuker, кукер) is a traditional Bulgarian ritual to scare away evil spirits, with costumed men performing the ritual. Closely related traditions are found throughout the Balkans and Greece (including Romania and the Pontus). The costumes cover most of the body and include decorated wooden masks of animals (sometimes double-faced) and large bells attached to the belt. Around New Year and before Lent, the kukeri walk and dance through the village to scare evil spirits away with the costumes and the sound of the bells, as well as to provide a good harvest, health, and happiness to the village during the year.

The kukeri traditionally visit the peoples' houses at night so that the sun would not catch them on the road. After going around the village they gather at the square to dance wildly and amuse the people. The ritual varies by region but its essence remains largely the same.
The custom is generally thought to be related to the Thracian Dionysos cult in the wider area of Thracia. Similar rituals can be also found in much of the Balkans.[1] The name kuker has been derived from Latin cuculla hood, cowl or cucurum quiver (shortened from a koukouros geros).[2] The corresponding figure in Greek-speaking Thrace is known as Kalogeros rod-carrier, also shortened to cuci, in former Yugoslavia known as didi, didici, in Bulgaria as kuker or babushar, as momogeros in Pontic Anatolia. In Romania, this figure mostly appears together with a goat, known as capra, turca or brezaia
Kuker is a divinity personifying fecundity, sometimes in Bulgaria and Serbia it is a plural divinity. In Bulgaria, a ritual spectacle of spring (a sort of carnival) takes place after a scenario of folk theatre, in which Kuker's role is interpreted by a man attired in a sheep- or goat-pelt, wearing a horned mask and girded with a large wooden phallus. During the ritual, various physiological acts are interpreted, including the sexual act, as a symbol of the god's sacred marriage, while the symbolical wife, appearing pregnant, mimes the pains of giving birth. This ritual inaugurates the labours of the fields (ploughing, sowing) and is carried out with the participation of numerous allegorical personages, among which is the Emperor and his entourage
Capra (goat) is a Romanian New Year dance that dates back to 1,600 BC. In Greek mythology, bacchantes would don the skins of sacrificed goat. For Romanians, the death and resurrection of the Capra reflects the death and rebirth of vegetation. Capra's chiseled wooden mask has a movable 'clamping' lower jaw and its horns are either of wood or from a goat, ram, or stag. The horns are adorned with girls' beads and kerchiefs, ribbons, multi-colored tassels, mirrors, ivy (plant considered sacred to Dionysus, used in thyrsus staves), basil (a symbol of love in Italy and Romania), natural or artificial flowers etc. Depending on the local tradition, Capra's body may be made of either carpet or red cloth with various adornments sewn on: traditional colorful cloth, embroidered handkerchiefs in Suceava, beaded ornate women's textile girdles in Bacău, reed seed heads in Botoşani and Iaşi, goat pelts in Vrancea and in Mehedinţi, fabric ribbons or colored paper in Neamţ and in Giurgiu etc.
