CAYO SANTA MARIA is a small key, 16 km (10 mi) long by 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, located in the Bahia de Buena Vista, off the northern coast of the main island of Cuba, in the province of Villa Clara. With its two neighbors, Cayo Las Brujas and Cayo Ensenachos, they together form a quiet resort destination with stunning beaches, called Los Cayos de Villa Clara. These cayos (keys) are connected to the main island of Cuba by a 48-km (30-mi) causeway (called Pedraplen in Spanish), from the coastal town of Caibarien.
These Cayos are part of a larger archipelago called Jardines del Rey (King's Garden), which is currently the most active area in Cuba for tourism development. Once completed, the archipelago should reach a capacity of about 32,000 rooms distributed in the following islands (from west to east): Cayo Las Brujas, Cayo Ensenachos, Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Coco, Cayo Paredon Grande and Cayo Cruz. This Cuban archipelago may then become the largest beach resort destination in Cuba with almost twice as many rooms as currently found in Varadero.
Cayo Santa Maria is part of the Villa Clara province but is located only about 30 km (18.6 mi) as-the-crow-flies west from Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco, two other popular beach destinations in the nearby province of Ciego de Avila. Learn more about the other islands of: Jardines del Rey.
We learned there’s also a project to build a water park (either near the dolphinarium or at the east end of Cayo Santa Maria), and a golf course in Dolores, a village located a few kilometers from the town of Caibarien (where starts the causeway to reach the cayos). In a short period of time Cayo Santa Maria became the second largest beach resort in Cuba, after Varadero, but despite this fast development, it remains a nice, safe and quiet little island.
Cayo Santa Maria BeachCayo Santa Maria's main attraction is without a doubt its 13 km (8 mi) of magnificent fine sand beaches, divided in three sections. The beaches and hotels are all located along the northern coast of the island, while the south coast is mainly dominated by forests, salt marshes and mangroves.

CAYO SANTA MARIA es un cayo pequeño, de 16 km (10 millas) de largo por 2 km (1.2 millas) de ancho, ubicado en la Bahía de Buena Vista, frente a la costa norte de la isla principal de Cuba, en la provincia de Villa Clara. Con sus dos vecinos, Cayo Las Brujas y Cayo Ensenachos, juntos forman un tranquilo destino turístico con impresionantes playas, llamadas Los Cayos de Villa Clara. Estos cayos (llaves) están conectados a la isla principal de Cuba por una calzada de 48 km (llamada Pedraplen en español), desde la ciudad costera de Caibarien.
Estos Cayos son parte de un archipiélago más grande llamado Jardines del Rey, que actualmente es el área más activa en Cuba para el desarrollo turístico. Una vez completado, el archipiélago debería alcanzar una capacidad de aproximadamente 32,000 habitaciones distribuidas en las siguientes islas (de oeste a este): Cayo Las Brujas, Cayo Ensenachos, Cayo Santa María, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Coco, Cayo Paredón Grande y Cayo Cruz. Este archipiélago cubano puede convertirse en el destino turístico de playa más grande de Cuba con casi el doble de habitaciones que actualmente se encuentran en Varadero.

PUERTO LOPEZ + The Most Beautiful Beach in Ecuador?
Puerto Lopez has changed from a small fishermens town to a popular tourist spot.
We ate some pan de yuca, pan de maiz and empanada de pina in the street, had beer on the beach in Puerto Lopez and then dinner at Noche de Parrilla which has a #3.25 merienda.
Breakfast was at Comedor Michita across the highway where the Puerto Lopez market is on the weekend. Fantastic tortilla de camaron and bolon de chicharron.
Although we wanted to hike at Machalilla National Park and then head to swim at Los Frailes beach the hiking trails were closed. But Los Frailes is known as one of the best beaches in Ecuador and I can see why

Bike Ride to Cantel and Boca de Camarioca, Varadero, Cuba
Most tourists will not venture outside the Varadero peninsula as it has many things to do - 20 km of white sand beach, caves to explore, dozens of hotels from 1-5 star, tonnes of restaurants & bars, the dolphin park, and more. However, if you head across the bridge at the western end of the peninsula, and pass through the less touristy town of Santa Marta you can immediately begin exploring rural Cuba.
This video is a short one of the road from Santa Marta to Cantel a sleepy town of a few hundred people. Then on to Camarioca, and Boca de Camarioca which is a small fishing village on the highway between the airport and Varadero.
