Ambato, también conocida como San Juan Bautista de Ambato es una ciudad ecuatoriana; cabecera cantonal del Cantón Ambato y capital de la Provincia de Tungurahua, así como la urbe más grande y poblada de la misma. Se localiza al centro de la Región interandina del Ecuador, en la hoya del río Patate, atravesada por el río Ambato, a una altitud de 2580 m s. n. m. y con un clima templado andino de 15,7 °C en promedio.
Es llamada «Ciudad de las Flores y las Frutas», o también «Cuna de los tres Juanes». En el censo de 2022 tenía una población de 177.316 habitantes, lo que la convierte en la undécima ciudad más poblada del país. La ciudad es el núcleo del área metropolitana de Ambato, la cual está constituida además por ciudades y parroquias rurales cercanas. El conglomerado alberga a 551.698 habitantes, y ocupa la quinta posición entre las conurbaciones del Ecuador.
La ciudad fue destruida varias veces por terremotos y erupciones volcánicas. El último de estos terremotos se dio el 5 de agosto de 1949, un terremoto con epicentro en la ciudad de Pelileo, en el sector conocido como Chacauco; afectó a Ambato en casi su totalidad, pero gracias a la tenacidad de sus habitantes, logró levantarse nuevamente en menos de dos años. Es uno de los más importantes centros administrativos, económicos, financieros y comerciales del Ecuador. Las actividades principales de la ciudad son el comercio, la industria y la agricultura.

Janis and I spent some time exploring Pelileo today. We did some walking around the markets and local shops as well as visited the famous jeans section of town. If you want cheap, good quality and even custom made JEANS, you must come to Pelileo.
Pelileo (full form, San Pedro de Pelileo) is a city located at the center of the Andean region of Ecuador called La Sierra (the highlands). It is the seat of Pelileo Canton (48,988 inhabitants, 2001 Census), and forms part of Tungurahua Province.
Pelileo is the second largest city in Tungurahua Province behind neighboring Ambato and is famous for the production and sale of blue jeans. Many travelers pass through Pelileo on their way from Ambato to Baños.
Pelileo is also known as the Blue City, because of its booming jean industry, mainly located in the El Tambo parish. Another of the parishes of Pelileo is the world-famous Salasaca, home to a Native American tribe originally from Bolivia that came to the Ecuadorian Andes as mitimaes. The Huambalo parish is well known as the home of artisans of fine furniture.
Pelileo is also known for the distillation of a local liquor called aguardiente. A hard, clear sugarcane-based alcohol, it is one of Pelileo's main products outside of blue jeans.
The main market days in Pelileo are Saturday and Tuesday.
Pelileo was founded by Antonio Clavijo in 1570 and was elevated to the status of county on July 22, 1860.
On August 5, 1949, Pelileo was totally destroyed by an earthquake. Some 5,000 people died within the limits of the county. The only remaining structure still visible from the old city is a broken stone pillar, once part of Pelileo's magnificent main church.
A new city was rebuilt in a nearby location. Currently it is therefore possible to visit both the Great Pelileo (Pelileo Grande), and the New Pelileo (Pelileo Nuevo). Wikipedia
