Discover Peja! Kosovo's Mountain City (Cultural Travel Guide)

Discover the history of this fascinating town at the foot of the Accursed Mountains along with the sites that make it a must visit' destination in Kosovo. This film features interviews with a number of community leaders working to transform Peja and the surrounding region into a premium cultural centre and tourist destination. Visit the famous Bazaar, the Peć Patriarchate, the Museum and the Art School, alongside a walk around time and an obligatory cafe stop. There is plenty of accommodation in Peja for all budgets. I stayed at the friendly and central Stone Bridge Guest House.
A big thank you to everyone who made my short visit to Peja so memorable.

PEJA - Tourist Capital of KOSOVO? (Western Balkans by Motorhome)

We wake up in Peja, the 'tourist city' of Kosovo. We spend the day exploring this compact city on foot. Peja is also known by its Albanian name Pejë or Serbian name ‘Peć,’ which means ‘cave,’ presumably after the nearby canyon or caves, which you can still visit today. Peja was ruled by the Serbs for 300 after a Serbian Grand Prince liberated the city from the Byzantine Empire in the late 12th century. Serbian archbishops then built homes and churches in the city, which later became a major religious center. The city was conquered by Montenegro, beginning a rapid succession of changing hands from Montenegro to Austria-Hungary to Serbia before becoming part of Yugoslavia until its dissolution in 1992. It remained a part of Serbia until 2008, when Kosovo declared its independence.

The Old Long Bazaar Street is an interesting bazaar with a typical oriental architecture where you can still find some original artisan shops such as the Albanian plis (cap-makers), gown-makers, sixhade (carpet) makers, shoemakers, watchmakers, and goldsmiths. The most preserved part of the “Çarshia e Gjate” is the part called “Rrethishtja” (circle) in the middle where there is an old fountain. Patriarchate of Pec The church consists of three domes and comprises three separate churches, with a fourth adjoining on the south side. All were built between the 13th and 14th centuries. The compound also includes modern living quarters for the nuns, ruins of an old monastery and a cemetery.

What’s it like in KOSOVO? Exploring PEJA | Gateway to the Accursed Mountains

Exploring the city of Peja in Kosovo + a tour of my room at the Benelux Hotel. The city has a Grand Bazaar & historic mosque and is considered Kosovo’s gateway to the Accursed Mountains.
???????? See all of my Road Trip in Kosovo here →

Peja is one of Kosovo’s largest cities and lies on the edge of the Rugova Canyon and accursed mountains. The city has a long history and is a former seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It was sadly hit hard during the Kosovo war where most of its architecture and historical buildings were damaged or destroyed, and lots of people suffered greatly in the fighting. It was a devastating time but Peja rebounded from adversity and has become an intriguing and interesting place to visit.

After a delayed flight I arrived in Peja later than planned – after parking and checking into my room it was 10pm so not enough time to properly explore the city. I decided to do a room tour at the Benelux hotel and then head out into the city centre to see the nightlife. My expectations were low on a Monday night but I quickly realised that Peja comes alive in the evenings and is awash with locals out enjoying themselves.

The next day I headed back into the city centre for a self guided tour of the many historical buildings and popular places. I walked along the Bazaar of Peja and made it partially inside the Çarshi Xhamija Mosque. Right in the centre is a public square on the banks of the Lumbardhi i Pejës River with a busy shopping zone and lots of memorials and flags. I walked a little further out to see the Haxhi Zeka Mill.

Whilst in the mood for walking I headed about 30 minutes to the east where I found a spectacular Serbian monastery called the Patriarchate of Peć (pećka patrijaršija), inside I discovered its history and admired the wonderful frescos painted on the walls. On such a lovely day it was good to see the old church and nunnery buildings with the lush green hills of the national park in the background.

The Best of Peja (4K) - Old Bazaar Peja, Patriarchate of Peć and Kosovo Pizza

This is the Peja segment of DIY Travel featuring Kosovo and the host Charles Huang will visit some of the cities most iconic and must visit attractions on foot. First being one of the oldest Bazaar in the country, the Old Bazaar Peja, established during Ottoman rule and is located near the Pećka Bistrica river, between parallel residence zones. The market place was completely destroyed at least twice, once during the Italian occupation in 1943, and once during the Kosovo War of 1998–99. The market was fully rebuilt after the Kosovo War, according to the historical Ottoman architecture, and serves as the main market in the city. We'll pass by the Peja Bistrica on the way to the main attraction in the town, Serbian Orthodox Church of Peja or commonly referred to as Patriarchate of Peć. This is a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery. Built in the 13th century, it became the residence of Serbian Archbishops. It was expanded during the 14th century, and in 1346, when the Serbian Patriarchate of Peć was created, the Monastery became the seat of Serbian Patriarchs. Monastery complex consists of several churches, and during medieval and early modern times it was also used as mausoleum of Serbian archbishops and patriarchs. Since 2006, it is part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo

We'll also showcase the a local favourite food with Turkish origin Dyner Me Muke sandwich and Kosovo Pizza

Chasing Kosovo WATERFALLS!! Kosova Raki for BREAKFAST at White Drin Waterfall | Peja, Kosovo

???? HOTEL DUKAGJINI:
???? RESORT UJEVARA E DRINIT:
???? TRAVEL MEDIA EU:

The sixth day of my epic road trip through Albania and Kosovo kicked off in the gorgeous city of Peja, Kosovo! Come join me as I drink some raki for breakfast and then explore the White Drin River and waterfall in Peja, Kosovo!

???????? DAVID’S BEEN HERE KOSOVO & ALBANIA SHIRTS:
???? RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

My day began about 30 minutes outside of Kosovo at the beautiful White Drin River. There’s a hotel right next to the river. I couldn’t wiat to have some breakfast, hike the area, and do some exploring!

We had a 30-minute hike around the river ahead of us. The rushing river goes through Albania and Kosovo. We approached the waterfall and got hit with the mist! It drenched us! The water comes from the mountains, so it’s super cold!

As we continued on, we reached a water fountain, where I took a drink. There’s nothing like drinking fresh mountain water!

Then, we continued to climb up some steps along the mountain. Re reached a bridge that crosses the White Drin right above a set of rushing falls. I had never been to a place like this before!

The path was super narrow and really intense, as it’s right above the falls!

Then, we continued along the path to the entrance of the second-largest cave in Kosovo. It’s called Sleeping Beauty Cave and is full of tunnels. Unfortunately, it was closed, but it’s open between April and October.

We began the hike back, and Erjan found a wild fire salamander. It’s a super beautiful creature! I had never seen one out in the wild!

We made it back to the hotel, Resort Ujevara e Drinit. The hotel’s restaurant, Moncafe, looks right over the river. It was so beautiful and peaceful, and the sound of the river is so soothing!

Erjan and I started with some espresso and paired it with raki, the way true Albanians and Kosovar people start their day! I loved the aroma. Most tourists probably won’t do this, but it’s the best way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

From there, we hopped in the car to head to Rugova Valley to do some ziplining! There are mountains, waterfalls, and canyons there. The area reminded me of Valbona and Montenegro!

Our first stop was a waterfall along the highway, which goes through the mountains. It was beautiful! There’s a restaurant right on the river with a sort of picnic area right on the river banks. It’s beautiful and relaxing, but it’s also cold! The Peja area is stunningly beautiful!

I crossed some of the rocks in the river and then we headed back up to the car. We reached another waterfall, and nearby we found a vendor selling honey, drinks, and raki bottles made from tree branches!

Unfortunately, the ziplining was closed, so we headed back to Peja to find more adventures! The drive to and from the city was absolutely gorgeous. The mountain scenery was unreal! You can hike and go rock climbing here!

We made it back to Hotel Dukagjini, our accommodations, and walked around the center of town. We saw the main square and pedestrian street and the I Love Peja sign.

What an eventful morning in and around Peja!

The capital of Kosovo
Pristina or Priština is the capital and largest city of Kosovo. It is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality and district. The city has a majority Albanian population, alongside other smaller communities.

Geographically, it is located in the north-eastern part of Kosovo close to the Goljak mountains. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by the ancient city of Ulpiana, that was considered one of the most important Roman cities in the Balkan peninsula.
