Paysandú es una de las ciudades más importantes del Uruguay. Es la capital del departamento homónimo. Esta ubicada sobre la margen este del río Uruguay, dista 378 km de la capital del país, Montevideo, y es fronteriza con la ciudad argentina de Colón de la provincia de Entre Ríos, con la cual se conecta directamente a través del puente internacional «General Artigas».
Paysandú tiene una importante riqueza cultural, arquitectónica y turística.
Posee una rica historia ya que el poblado que le da origen data de los inicios de la colonización española.
Su etimología es incierta, algunas fuentes argumentan que es de origen guaraní, se ha propuesto la existencia de un sacerdote (pa’i) de apellido similar, o la frase pa’i sandu (el sacerdote escucha). Según muy antiguos documentos se designaba a los indios guaraníes con el nombre de Chanduls o Chandus, y de ahí podría derivar en Paso de Chandú o Sandú, Paso Sandú a Pa- i- sandú. También han aparecido varias leyendas como la existencia de un Padre Sandú del que no existe ningún rastro de su existencia. Tanto estas como las restantes carecen de evidencia histórica.4
Diversas fuentes atribuyen la fundación de Paysandú a un religioso jesuita llamado Policarpo Sandú, de origen vasco, supuestamente nacido en Idiazabal.5 Este religioso habría fundado una reducción con doce familias aborígenes procedentes de las Misiones jesuíticas en el año 1772, prácticamente en el lugar en que desarrolló la actual ciudad.6
Pero esta tradición ha sido cuestionada: en 1919, P. Baldomero Vidal inició una investigación en los diversos archivos eclesiásticos que no encontró rastros de la existencia, que había sido siempre presumida y no probada, del P. Sandú. En los años siguientes, en cambio, encontró menciones del nombre de Paysandú en documentos más antiguos que 1772:
Un trabajo del P. Carlos Leonhardt S.J. en 1927 que reproducía palabras del P. Bernardo Nusdorffer S.J. (sacerdote de las misiones orientales, nacido el 17 de agosto de 1686 en la ciudad de Platting, Baviera), donde se da cuenta de haberse reunido los españoles “en el paraje de una isla del Uruguay, llamada Y Paúçandó”. Descomponiendo la palabra Y (río); paú (isla); çandó (no continuado, interpolado), Leonhardt la tradujo por isla interpolada en el río.7
Un mapa dibujado en 1749 por el sacerdote jesuita misionero José Quiroga Méndez, que actualmente se conserva en el Museo del Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, en el que el nombre Paisandú aparece en el mismo lugar que ocupa hoy la ciudad, próximo al grado 32 de latitud.
Una representación hecha por las Compañías de Corrientes al Maestre de Campo José de Andonaegui, en agosto de 1754, donde es mencionado el Paso de Paisandú.
El poblado se transformó en un asentamiento con puerto y saladero para fabricar tasajo y acopiar cueros. En 1805 se crea la Parroquia de Paysandú, lo que significa de hecho el conocimiento de la villa. En 1810 se le encarga a Benito Chain la planificación y el delineamiento del Pueblo de Paysandú.
Fue sitiada por los portugueses y brasileños en tres oportunidades y es famosa por la heroica defensa que hicieron sus habitantes en 1864, bajo el mando del general nacional Leandro Gómez, al hacer frente al sitio de las tropas del general colorado Venancio Flores y sus aliados brasileños.
TORRE DE LA DEFENSA
La Torre de la Defensa llegó a su último piso ubicándose a unos 88 metros de altura, de los 105 metros totales que medirá al culminarse el majestuoso edificio, lo que inicialmente estába previsto para fines del corriente año o comienzos de 2023.
El “remate final” de la obra, es “un coronamiento, con el techito y el mástil de unos 17 metros más”.
Al culminar, el edificio alcanzará “unos 105 metros medidos desde la vereda”, puntualizó. Este se convertirá en el edificio de viviendas más alto del país junto con el Look Brava de Punta del Este. El edificio tendrá 2 niveles de garajes, planta baja, 25 habitables, más los de servicios, totalizando 30 pisos en total. De acuerdo a lo planificado, la obra quedaría terminada a fines de año, pero debido a inclemencias de tiempo podría extenderse hasta principios del 2023. Los trabajos comenzaron en noviembre de 2020, contabilizándose a la fecha unos “18 meses de obra”, confirmó. Al momento se llevan comercializados más del 90% de las unidades y, en este sentido, vale recordar que el edificio comprende 35 apartamentos, 3 oficinas, local comercial en planta baja hacia calle Florida, gimnasio, barbacoa, solarium, sala de lavado y secado y unos 70 estacionamientos.

Fue tres semanas despues que el rio presentara por 2do años consecutivo, una coloracion extraña. Este fenomeno se enmarca en un panorama preocupante de los cursos de agua en el Uruguay, desde que -a pesar de las advertencias de organizaciones ambientales, -se volvieran intensivos los plantios de eucaliptus y en particular de soja, con el paquete incluido de agrotoxicos. Recordamos y esta registrado (2004), el abrupto cambio que significo el cultivo de soja en las riberas del rio, a lo largo de todo su recorrido. El Uruguay entero, presenta hoy, un marco preocupante de fuentes de agua contaminadas, muchas de ellas fuentes de consumo de agua para las poblaciones.

El grupo se formó en 1958 en Paysandú, Uruguay, y contaba con seis miembros. Inicialmente se autodenominaron los Blue Kings ya que en esa época estaban de moda los nombres en inglés; pero un profesor de música del colegio donde ellos asistían les dijo que optaran por un nombre en español, luego adoptaron el nombre de Los Iracundos, debido al ingreso a la poderosa disquera RCA VICTOR.1
Eduardo Franco, 'Franco' (vocalista, compositor, arreglista), su hermano Leonardo Franco, 'Leoni' (primera guitarra), Juan Carlos Velázquez, 'Juano' (batería), Juan Bosco Zabalo, 'Bosco' (segunda guitarra), Hugo Burgueño, 'Burgues' (bajo electrónico, compositor y coros) y Jesús María Febrero, 'Febro' (teclados) fueron los seis integrantes originales del grupo.
Los Iracundos alcanzaron fama internacional a mediados de la década de 1960 con temas románticos juveniles como Calla (grabado el 31 de marzo de 1965), Y la Ciudad Duerme (lanzado el 25 de julio de 1965) Todo terminó, la Juventud, El desengaño (del disco La Juventud), La lluvia terminó, Felicidad, felicidad,Tú ya no estarás, El triunfador y Es la lluvia que cae, tema incluido en el álbum Iracundos en Roma -el más exitoso de esta década- éxitos que los llevan a incursionar, incluso, en el cine, en varias oportunidades como invitados y en una de ellas como protagonistas, en la película Este loco verano donde además interpretaban las canciones de su repertorio.

Cuando se habla de Uruguay en el extranjero suele asociárselo a su costa oceánica y al este en general, con lugares destacados a nivel internacional como
Punta del Este, José Ignacio, Piriápolis, como así también toda la costa de oro. Sin embargo la costa de Uruguay es mucho más que eso, ya que el país cuenta hacia el oeste con un litoral con el río de la Plata y Río Uruguay que no tiene nada que envidiar a otros lugares.
Lugares como Carmelo, Fray Bentos, Mercedes, Paysandú y Salto pueden llegar a ser destinos excepcionales tanto para un viaje en soledad como una estadía en familia.

Uruguay Travel
Uruguay , officially the Eastern Republic of Uruguay (Spanish: República Oriental del Uruguay), is a country in the southeastern region of South America. It is bordered by Argentina to its west and Brazil to its north and east, with the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southeast. Uruguay is home to 3.3 million people,[1] of whom 1.8 million live in the metropolitan area of its capital and largest city, Montevideo. With an area of approximately 176,000 square kilometres (68,000 sq mi), Uruguay is geographically the second-smallest nation in South America after Suriname.
Uruguay was inhabited by the Charrúa people for approximately 4000 years before the Portuguese invaded. Portugal established Colonia del Sacramento, one of the oldest European settlements in the country, in 1680. Montevideo was founded as a military stronghold by the Spanish in the early 18th century, signifying the competing claims over the region. Uruguay won its independence between 1811 and 1828, following a four-way struggle between Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil. It remained subject to foreign influence and intervention throughout the 19th century, with the military playing a recurring role in domestic politics until the late 20th century. Modern Uruguay is a democratic constitutional republic, with a president who serves as both head of state and head of government.
Uruguay is ranked first in Latin America in democracy, peace, lack of corruption, quality of living,[7] e-Government,[8] and equally first in South America when it comes to press freedom, size of the middle class, prosperity and security.[7] On a per capita basis, Uruguay contributes more troops to United Nations peacekeeping missions than any other country.[7] It ranks second in the region on economic freedom, income equality, per capita income and inflows of FDI.[7] Uruguay is the third best country on the continent in terms of HDI, GDP growth,[9] innovation and infrastructure.[7] It is regarded as a high income country (top group) by the UN, the only one in Latin America.[8] Uruguay is also the 3rd best ranked in the world in e-Participation.[8] Uruguay is an important global exporter of combed wool, rice, soybeans, frozen beef, malt and milk.[7]
The Economist named Uruguay country of the year in 2013[10] acknowledging the innovative policy of legalizing the production, sale and consumption of cannabis. Same-sex marriage and abortion are also legal, leading Uruguay to be regarded as one of the most liberal nations in the world, and one of the most socially developed, outstanding regionally[11] and performing well globally on personal rights, tolerance and inclusion issues.[12]

A quick video of our whirlwind tour of Uruguay. We started in Trinidad and made our way through Montevideo and Sacramento before jumping on the ferry to Argentina.

Esta ruta se puede hacer en auto, las rutas están en buen estado. Es más segura en este momento de pandemia para evitar ciudades grandes y más corta que ir por Montevideo si venís de Punta del Este y vas a Entre Ríos, Argentina o a Paysandú, Uruguay o a la inversa, si venís desde Argentina y quieres ir a Punta del Este.
