The Ilocos Region is the first region located in northwestern Luzon. It is comprised of two major provinces: Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. There’s no right answer on which one to visit first, the goal is to visit both! You’ll enjoy Laoag in the north, famously dubbed as the Sunshine City, or to the south in Vigan where you will be taken back to the Spanish colonization era in the Philippines. Whether you want to go on a history or nature trip, Ilocos will leave you craving for more every time you visit.

See and Do
In Ilocos Norte, we have Laoag, the capital of Ilocos Norte. One of the most notable destinations here is the two-story mansion that was the former holiday home of late President Marcos and his family. It is now a museum, where visitors are free to explore and check out almost every nook and cranny of the house. When you’re done, you can head for Paoay and find tranquility by the lake, go to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Paoay Church, or ride a 4x4 and slide down the sand dunes. If you have more time, you can take a visit to the Batac museum and view the memorabilia of the late President Marcos.

In Ilocos Sur, you’ll be delighted to step into the picturesque Vigan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It feels like time traveling to the past, as the Spanish-era houses have been well-preserved over the years. While walking in the streets, don’t forget to grab delicacies that are unique to the town such as Vigan longganisa and Ilocos empanada.

Where to Stay
Ilocos is a popular tourist spot and therefore has a lot of establishments for visitors. Whether you pick north or south, you’ll be able to see hotel options that will suit your budget and taste.

Ilocos Norte (Ilocano: Amianan nga Ilocos; Probinsia ti Ilocos Norte) is a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region. Its capital is Laoag City, located in the northwest corner of Luzón Island, bordering Cagayan and Apayao to the east, and Abra to the southeast, and Ilocos Sur to the southwest. Ilocos Norte faces the West Philippine Sea to the west and the Luzon Strait to the north. Ilocos Norte is noted for being the birthplace of the former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

The world is so vast and I like to see some of the places if seeing all is impossible. I always see to it that my camera is ready to document each place and share them to my family and friends through the social media. I love the different scenery, different people, different culture and all the other differences that makes the world diverse. It is in those differences that my perspective in life is broadened,

PAGUDPUD ILOCOS NORTE | Exploring 5 TOURIST SPOTS | Patapat Bridge, Blue Lagoon & More | Philippines

PAGUDPUD ILOCOS NORTE | Travel Philippines
Exploring 5 TOURIST SPOTS of Pagudpud | Patapat Bridge, Blue Lagoon, Timmangtang Rock, Bantay Abot Cave & Kaibigan Falls

We explored Pagudpud through the tricycle tour package which is being offered by most tricycle drivers of Pagudpud. The tour package costs 800 Pesos (regular rate) with up to 3 persons capacity.

Fist attraction we visited is one of the most famous destinations in Ilocos - the Patapat Bridge/Patapat Viaduct. This 1.3 km long coastal bridge is also one of the longest bridges in the country.
All the other 4 tourist spots are situated in the same barangay (Balaoi) so they are not too far from each other. Upon entry to Timmangtang, Bantay Abot Cave and Blue Lagoon, there will be a 20 Pesos per person entrance fee to be paid at the Banrangay Police Office.

Timmangtang Rock & Bantay Abot Cave are two gorgeous rock formations that offer a beautiful view of the ocean. Both are perfect spots for capturing instagrammable photos.

Blue Lagoon Beach on the other hand is also very impressive. This is probably the beach with the bluest water we’ve seen in Ilocos. It’s equally as attractive as the other famous Saud Beach of Pagudpud and it also has several cottages for rent, hotels and transient houses.

Last tourist spot we explored is the Kaibigan Falls. There will be a registration fee/entry fee of 200 pesos (for 4 persons and below) which already includes the guide fee. While 40 Pesos per person for groups who are more than 5. It only takes around 10 to 15 minutes hike to get to the waterfall.

ILOCOS NORTE

St. Augustine Church, Paoay

It is one of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines that represent a fusion of European church design and well known for its distinct architecture emphasized by the iconic buttresses to withstand the constant earthquakes in the region. Paoay Church, a 336 years old church is also an exceptional example of earthquake baroque in Philippines. Declared as National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines in 1973 and Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the collective group of Baroque Churches of the Philippines in 1993.

Bayogan, Bayog Beach

The beautiful contrast of the turquiose water and the dark stones on the beach is easily accessible to tourists. Located along the national highway in the town of Burgos, Ilocos Norte.

Bangui Viewdeck

Overlooking Bangui valley and some of the first generation wind turbines. It is open for locals and tourists to take great pictures.

Bangui Windmills

The first wind farm in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia is situated in the windswept town of Bangui, Ilocos Norte, on the northern end of Luzon Island, a project of Filipino-Danish consortium Northwind Power Development Corporation spearheaded the development and construction while Vestas Wind Systems supplied the wind turbine-generator units (WTGs) for the site.
similar to those already found in Denmark.

These on-shore turbines are spaced 326 meters apart, each 70 meters high; 41 meters long blades; a rotor diameter of 82 meters and a wind swept area of 5,281 square meters, each with a maximum production capacity of 1.65 Megawatts of electric power line up across 9km of the black sand beach in the Bangui Bay Shoreline, facing the West Philippine Sea - a major turning point in tapping the massive potential of renewable power sources in the region.

Saud Beach in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Saud Beach, popularly known as “Pagudpud Beach” made it to the top of United States Travel + Leisure magazine's list of the 25 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World in 2021. WOW!

Dubbed as “Boracay of the North”, a stunning 2-kilometer white sand beach is known for its pristine waters, coast lined with coconut palms and popular surfing spot for tourists who want to avoid huge crowds as the destination is not as highly commercialized as other famous beach destinations in the Philippines. The breathtaking beauty of Saud Beach is often featured in travel photos of Ilocos Norte, so taking a swim or catching waves in Pagudpud should definitely be part of your itinerary.

Patapat Viaduct

Patapat Viaduct also known as Patapat Bridge, is the 4th longest bridges in the country with a length of 1,300 km; width of 9.42 m and a coastal road elevated for about 31 meters above sea level that connects the Maharlika Highway in Laoag, Ilocos Norte to its neighboring province, Cagayan Valley.

The Patapat Viaduct in Pagudpud was constructed by Hanil Development Co. Ltd. under the overall management of DPWH-PMO-PJHK and was completed and opened to the public on October 1986.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, also known as Burgos Lighthouse, is a cultural heritage structure in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, established and operated in 1892. The 66-foot-tall (20 m) octagonal stone tower and the highest-elevated that is still original and active Spanish era lighthouse in the country was designed by engineer Magin Pers y Pers in 1887 then finished by the Lighthouse Service under engineer Guillermo Brockman.

Set high in the country’s northwesternmost point, the lighthouse is located on Vigia de Nagpartian Hill overlooking Cape Bojeador in the West Philippine Sea, where ships of the galleon trade sailed by.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse was declared a National Historical Landmark on August 13, 2004 and a National Cultural Treasure on June 20, 2005 by the Philippine government.

Laoag Sand Dunes

The La Paz Sand Dunes is a unique tourist spot covers 85 square kilometers of sandy coastal desert and beach in Laoag City, the provincial capital of Ilocos Norte. The coastal desert stretches from the towns of Currimao north of Laoag to Pasuquin south of Laoag. Dubbed as the Desert of the North because of its popularity when it comes to shooting sites for some local films such as Panday and Himala and international films including Mad Max and Born of the Fourth of July.

The Ilocos Norte Sand Dunes was identified as one of the National Geological Monuments or significant geological formations in the Philippines by the National Committee on Geological Sciences (NCGS) on November 26, 1993.
