Chicken Bus Antigua Guatemala to Panajachel Lake Atitlan
The Chicken Bus from Antigua Guatemala to Panajachel Lake Atitlan is the cheapest (36 quetzals vs 80 for a shuttle) and most exotic way of traveling between Antigua Guatemala and Panajachel on the shores of Lago de Atitlan. There is only one direct bus (Rebuli is the company) between Antigua and Panajachel, leaving at 7 AM from Antigua (be at Panaderia Colombia at 6:40) and returning from Panajachel at 10:45 (from the bus station on Calle Principal). It takes ~3 hours and the bus makes multiple stops along the way.
The views are interesting and quite nice after you pass Solola and go down to Panajachel with Lago de Atitlan on your right. Try to not have a bulky backpack so you can put it in the overhead space. Otherwise, it will go behind the last row of chairs where it`s less safe. As always in chicken buses, sitting towards the front is safer but in the back is less crowded.
The bus goes to Jocatenango, Parramos, Chimaltenango and then via Interamerican Highway to Tecpan, Los Encuentros, and Solola before arriving at Panajachel. To visit other villages on the lake (San Pedro, San Marcos, Santiago Atitlan, Santa Cruz) you can take a lancha from Panajachel.

Chicken Busses of Guatemala
The chaos of using chicken busses, the local transportation in Guatemala includes a lot of transfers and helpful locals. The busses are old U.S. school busses brought to Guatemala and repainted with bright colors. Mostly they are used by locals but they can offer a nice adventure also for travelers while at the same time also saving some money.
This time I took chicken bus from Lake Atitlán to Antigua. It included four busses from Panajachel to Sololá, Los Encuentros, Chimaltenango and finally to Antigua. After exploration of Antigua, I took one final bus to the town, where my Couchsurfing host lived, Parramos.

Hiking Active Volcano in Guatemala
Fuego, the active volcano in Guatemala erupts approximately every half an hour. It's located close to Antigua. I joined the overnight hike to the mountain next to it, Acatenango to see this incredible natural wonder.

Hiking in Antigua : Half Moon Bay
This is a great area for hiking in Antigua and this is just a starting point. It's not overly hilly and is close to the resorts of Long bay beach such as the pineapple grand and the verandah. Half moon bay is the beach where there is still a ruined resort that you can explore (if you want). This was due to hurricane damage and the lack of will to restore. I think this will be changed before the decade is out.
