The CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, commonly known as the Parkes Observatory, is a large radio telescope located near the town of Parkes in New South Wales, Australia.
The telescope was constructed in the early 1960s and was officially commissioned in 1961. It has since become one of the most iconic radio telescopes in the world.
The Parkes Radio Telescope has a parabolic reflector dish that is 64 meters (210 feet) in diameter. This large dish allows the telescope to observe radio waves from celestial objects in the sky.
The telescope has been instrumental in a variety of astronomical observations and discoveries. It played a significant role in the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon by tracking the spacecraft and broadcasting the first moonwalk to the world.
The Parkes Radio Telescope gained additional recognition through the Australian film The Dish (2000), which dramatizes the role of the telescope in the Apollo 11 mission. The film highlights the efforts of the Parkes Observatory team during the historic moon landing.

Dubbo, Parkes, Forbes, Deniliquin (NSW country towns)
Our original plans were to visit some of the towns down the middle of New South Wales and see what we find. Nature defied us and sent one of the worst rain systems in 100 years so we were limited on where we could go and how far we could venture off the main roads, you will see that we had to turn back a couple of times.
We had wonderful stays in the bigger country towns along the Newell Highway right down the middle of NSW. Checked out the plane museums, car museums and Elvis museum.
