BE HONEST... could you tell me anything about TAJIKISTAN?

I couldn’t tell you much either, before arriving here yesterday... My first day wandering around Tajikistan's capital city of Dushanbe was off-beat and eye opening. I was stopped by the police TWICE for taking photos & videos (I don't know why).. so it was a challenge to make this video! Dushanbe is a very different place than anywhere I’ve ever been (in a cool & unique way), and I’m excited to see more of the country over the coming days.

BEST MOUNTAIN VIEWS EVER?!? Hiking in Fann Mountains, Tajikistan

During my most recent trip to Central Asia, I had the chance to hike the absolutely stunning Lakes Loop Trek in the Fann Mountains of Tajikistan. This spectacular 3-day trek takes you to a number of mind-blowing lakes, over huge mountain passes, and alongside nomadic shepherds whose families have lived here for centuries.

Hiking in Tajikistan should be at the top of any adventurous traveller's bucket list, but surprisingly few people ever make it here. What that means is you get to enjoy these fantastic views without any of the crowds. Move over Patagonia and Nepal - Tajikistan is the new trekking hotspot!

We started our hike at Artuch Alplarger Camp and usually finished back at the same camp but we finished up at Vertical Alauddin Camp. We camped next to the Kulikalon lakes and Alauddin lake along the way, and you can do this hike either fully independent by bringing all your own food and sleeping gear or opt to do it supported by joining a tour. I did the latter with a couple of other blogger and photographer friends. We had a lot of fun, and even though the hike was challenging for me, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

If you're looking for a unique experience, make sure you add the Lakes Loop Trek in Tajikistan to your travel plans!

Check out my ultimate guide to the Lakes Loop Trek in the Fann Mountains in Tajikistan:

This video was made possible thanks to my partnership with USAID and Travel Tajikistan, who are working hard to develop new tourism products in the region. Thank you to Pamir Travel for organising the logistics of the hike for us.

The Treasure of Penjikent. Tajikistan

Penjikent it is a city in the Sughd province of Tajikistan on the river Zeravshan. It is one of the ancient towns of Sogdiana. The ruins of ancient Penjikent are on the outskirts of the modern city. Near by the ancient Penjikent located the archaeological site Sarazm.

Sarazm is an ancient town and it dates back to the 4th millennium BC. Sarazm today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located 15 kilometers west of the city of Panjakent. The area has a length about 1.5 km and a width from 400 to 900 m. The area has a great archaeological interest as it constitutes the first proto-historical agricultural society in this region of Central Asia.

Haftkul or Marguzor lakes or also known as Seven beauties of Shing it is a unique complex of seven lakes (haft - is seven and kul is lake) with the crystal clear turquoise water in the valley of Zarafshan on the north of Tajikistan. The lakes are located on the foothills of Fann mountains. They cascade along the Shing River Valley. The lower lake is located at an altitude of 1598 meters above sea level, and the highest one is at an altitude of 2400 meters. Formed as a result of the movement of a glacier, lakes from a geological point of view are a vivid example of a moraine relief, and from an aesthetic point of view they are a beautiful, amazing, spectacular landscape. The water in Haftkul has a bright turquoise colour due to the mineral salts dissolved in it.

Haft kul - The seven lakes of Tajikistan

The seven lakes of Tajikistan were formed in an earthquake that collapsed the mountain walls on top of the river in the valley forming natural dams and therefore lakes. Each of the seven lakes are different in size, depth and color and rural villages are located along the chain of lakes. The lakes can be accessed by car or hiking from Penjikent. Discover Zerafshan (Tourism Promotion Film - 10 min)

The Zerafshan Valley is the cradle of Tajik civilization, home of the first city builders in Central Asia. The Bronze Age site of Sarazm, which translates as the beginning of the land in 2010 became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tajikistan. The region is rich in history with a strong emphasis on learning of Traditions and Culture. It is a place where ancient ceremonies and customs, clothes and embellishments, articles of life, architectural styles, legends and folklore were saved and passed down from father to son. In the remains of the settlement of Ancient Penjikent we see the home of the last Sogdian King, a Zorastrian city, from the centre of the Great Silk Road, where many cultures met, exchanging beliefs, ideas and art. The Zerafshan Valley (also Zarafshan or Zarafshon) is situated in northern Tajikistan with Panjakent as its premier city, embedded between the impressive mountain ranges of the western Pamir-Alai massive.Zerafshan -- which means Gold bearing River in Tajik -- is the main stream which crosses the valley and which is the major source of water in the region. There are also many spectacular lakes in the region situated between the mountains.Due to its rich cultural history, natural beauty and the generous hospitality of its inhabitants the Zerafshan valley of Tajikistan is emerging as a major World Tourist Destination in Central Asia.

Discover the Majestic Wonders of Fann Mountains' Haftkul

In this video, we'll take you on a journey to discover the majestic wonders of the Fann Mountains' Haftkul. Located in Tajikistan, this stunning mountain range is a must-see for any traveler to the country.

Haftkul is a hidden paradise perfect for hikers and climbers. You'll be amazed by the beautiful landscapes and views of the seven lakes located within the Haftkul mountains. Trekking Tajikistan is the perfect way to explore this incredible place!

According to local legend, one day an old local man went missing. He had seven daughters and out of grief they began to cry day and night until they all collapsed in a flood of their own tears. Each lake represents one of the man's daughters and these 7 lakes are called Haftkul.

In fact, the Fann Mountain region, like much of Tajikistan, is prone to earthquakes. Each lake was formed by a landslide that dammed the Shing River as it meandered through the narrow valley. A dreamlike natural phenomenon. You have to visit this place at least once in your life.
Our next video about this area will appear soon.
