Let's travel to Tahiti and let's walk around Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas country of France in the Pacific Ocean. The commune (municipality) of Papeete is located on the island of Tahiti and it is the primary center of Tahitian and French Polynesian public and private governmental, commercial, industrial and financial services, the hub of French Polynesian tourism and a commonly used port of call.
Papeete is the largest city in and capital of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti. Papeete is a typical government center and industrial port with small doses of French and Polynesian charm. Papeete has shopping, eating, and drinking, but very little sightseeing for a capital city and even fewer top-class hotels. The residents speak French and Tahitian, although English is spoken by many in the tourist trade. The people-watching is superb.
The heart and soul of the South Pacific, Tahiti is the largest in a chain of islands that make up French Polynesia. The name can either refer to the main island or the entire destination. Commonly referred to as The Islands of Tahiti, French Polynesia is a collection of 118 islands and atolls scattered across an impressive nautical surface area the size of Western Europe. Still, these tiny islands—many of which remain uninhabited—make up a total landmass of only 1,600 square miles (4,100 sq. km).

Tahiti Museum, Musée de Tahiti et des Îles Papette French Polynesia
The Tahiti Museum, Musée de Tahiti et des Îles in the capital city of Papeete invites you to explore the culture and history of Tahiti. The first exhibit when entering the museum is an immersive geological time~map illustrating how these islands have changed over millennia.
On display is the artistry of traditional crafts, carvings in wood, stone and bone, tapa cloth weavings, boat building and ancient tattooing devices.
The meaning and symbolism behind traditional tattoos is an integral part of the islanders' identity and a continues to be a living testament to an enduring custom of Polynesia... a practice which have now been embraced by the larger world.
The galleries contain a wide variety of ancient tools and implements used as ceremonial objects. Each piece provides a glimpse into the daily lives and rituals of the people.
Taking center stage is Tahiti's seafaring legacy with a collection of boats and navigational tools that once guided Polynesian voyagers across the Pacific ocean. Tahitians were skilled ancient mariners that navigated the open waters with astounding precision.
The elongated bow of this canoe missing the outrigger, was used for both deep-sea fishing was paddle-driven, which enabled the fisherman to stand up to throw his spear. The body of the canoe contained two half-hulls of mango wood connected by ligatures of coconut husk fiber.
There's also a small section dedicated to Captain James Cook one of the world's greatest navigators and explorers who landed here in 1769.
The museum also contains a modern art gallery celebrating contemporary Tahitian art, reflecting the ongoing evolution of creativity and expression on these islands.
A major theme being the breathtaking beauty of the landscape and the balance between natural and the modern culture. The Musée de Tahiti et des Îles, Tahitian Te Fare Manaha, is the national museum of French Polynesia, located in Puna'auia, Tahiti.

One Minute in: French Polynesia - MOTU NONO - Paradies Found
Motu Nono is a really small island off the coast of Tahiti. We were able to paddle to the island with canoes directly from our accommodation. The small island was our highlight in French Polynesia before we had to cancel the rest of our trip due to Corona. We will be back!

Tahiti - A Tour of the French Polynesian Paradise
Unlike other French Polynesian islands, Tahiti shows its volcanic origins by having mostly black sand beaches and only few beaches where white sand mixes with various amounts of black sand and creates different shades of grey.
Tahiti has the highest population in French Polynesia and therefore has by far the most things to see and do, especially when it comes to non-beach activities.

Renting a car in Tahiti, is quit easy and straight forward. Most major hotels on the island would have the car rental company pick you up from the hotel, once you are done with the car you can just leave the keys at your hotel. We found that to be really helpful.
Taharuu Beach is on Tahiti's southern coast in Papara and characterized by its volcanic black sands, leafy green palm trees and its width. This beach is large, meaning there's plenty of room to spread out and soak up the sun, and it's framed by deep blue water and frothy white waves. Popular with families, locals and tourists, this beach also is ideal swimming conditions and may even see some surfers working on their skills. There's also an on-site snack bar.
