PADANG – West Sumatra – Best Things to do / Highlights – Travel Guide
West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat) – the Land of the Minangkabau – was THE discovery of the year. I have traveled much, but since my visit to Bangladesh, I have not come accross any place that was so raw! Padang is truly wonderful Indonesia, without tourists.
Because Padang is yet not very touristy, it remains relatively cheap. I have spent only 150 SGD in 4 days (450 MYR or 110 USD). This included the hotels, food, national park and island entrance feed, as well as the daily costs of 550’000 IDR (38 USD) for the driver.
The best things that you can do in Padang are visiting the islands, West Sumatra Grand Mosque, Nasi Padang Restaurants, Rice fields in Padang Pariaman and the Museum Adityawarman (not shown as it was closed during my visit).

Bukittinggi - Indonesia UNSEEN [Full Travel Guide] West Sumatra - Best Things to do - Top Places

West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat) – the Land of the Minangkabau – was THE discovery of the year. I have traveled much, but since my visit to Bangladesh, I have not come accross any place that was so raw! Bukittinggi is so rich in culture and at the same time very underrated. Yet, it is truly wonderful Indonesia! The best thing: there are barely any tourists.
Because Bukittinggi is yet not very touristy, it remains relatively cheap. I have spent only 150 SGD in 4 days (450 MYR or 110 USD). This included the hotels, food, national park and island entrance feed, as well as the daily costs of 550’000 IDR (38 USD) for the driver.
The best things that you can do around Bukittinggi are visiting the Rumah Gadang Minangkabau, Istano Basa Pagaruyung, Sianok Valley (ngarai sianok), Anai Waterfall, Japanese Tunnel, Lake Maninjau, Jam Gadang and the Jambatan Limpapeh. There is surely a lot more to discover, this for another trip! For sure I will travel there again! Thus, this video is my first Travel Guide for this region around Bukittinggi in West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat)

First Impressions of PADANG INDONESIA ???????? You'll Love this City!

If you only have a day to spend in Padang you don't want to miss these spots.

Padang is the capital of West Sumatra and most people use this port city as an overnight stay heading to the Mentawai Islands or to Bukittinggi. But it's known as one of the best cities to food. In fact Padang food is known throughout the country as having the best Indonesian food.

I had an amazing guide, Alan with Discover West Sumatra who loves food as much as I do and created this custom tour for me.

In this video I'm sharing two beautiful mosques in Padang, including the Grand Mosque of West Sumatra which has the traditional Minangkabau architecture.

And if you want to learn a bit about the Minangabau people the Aditywarman Museum is in the centre of the city and entrance to the museum is less than a dollar.

You can support my work at where I share tips that don't make it to videos and behind the scenes content.

Island Tour PADANG INDONESIA: Hidden Gem Beaches

The Maldives are known for their beautiful beaches and so is Bali. But have you ever thought of finding other wonderful beaches around INDONESIA? I got to find some dreamy beaches far away from Bali on Sumatra. Just nearby Padang is the humble village of Sungai Pisang that is a great gateway for going for island hopping. The place is less touristy and also offers cheaper prices (500k IDR for 1 day). A must is a visit to the island called Pulau Sirandah. That had the most beautiful white sand beach with clearest turquoise water. The many colors of the water make you feel like you were in the Maldives. But this is non-touristy Padang region in West Sumatra! Just at the backside is another island, a great hidden gem to visit. The serenity there is incredible and you won’t believe these dreamy islands were in West Sumatra! Another beautiful place to visit is Pasumpahan island. Save that one for the later afternoon, the entire environment is going to enchant you. Pulau Pasumpahan is very quiet and it makes you feel you got lost in Jurassic park! At Pasumapahan island you also may enjoy a dreamy sunset. The colors will be very strong; outstanding for taking pictures. 2 islands are enough, also worth would be a trip to Pulau Sikuai. All in all, a perfect hidden gem for island hopping in Indonesia; far away from the crowds! Sungai Pisang is around 1.5 hours from Padang by car; suitable for a one day trip.

This is episode 2 of our Indonesian Street Food series. Today we will be showing you the culinary hotspot of Padang in West Sumatra: BUKITTINGGI! We are driving from Padang City, and will be making food stops along the way to sample some delicious Indonesian snacks! This Indonesian road trip was made possible with the help of Roni’s Tours.

Roni’s Tours:

Our first stop of the day after Lembah Anai Waterfall was for Sate Padang. We ordered 3 different cuts of beef: lean muscle, heart, and intestine. It was cooked over charcoal and had a smoky aroma. It was served Padang style with a spicy sauce (Rp. 27.000 / USD $1.84 for 6 sticks). We also tried a traditional coconut rice dessert which are wrapped in banana leaves (Rp. 4000 / USD $0.27 each).

We continued toward Bukittinggi stopping for a traditional snack known as Bika. Bika are pastries made of rice flour, palm sugar and coconut, and banana. The cooking process involves placing the uncooked bika into a earthenware pot and then a bowl full of wood fire on top. These bika are SUPER delicious (Rp. 24.000 / USD $1.64 for 4 pieces).

Our next stop was in Bukkittingi. We visited an outdoor food market: Los Lambuang, which is known for Nasi Kapau. Nasi Kapau is similar to Nasi Padang in that the dishes served are Minangkabau. What makes them different is the serving style (to learn more about Nasi Padang, check out our previous episode). The stall we ordered from is called Uni Lis and we ordered Gulai Tambusu (intestines stuffed with egg + tofu served in curry), ayam rendang, dakak dakak (crunchy cassava cubes) as well as sambal (Rp. 48.000 / USD $3.28 per plate).

We went into the city centre to see Bukittinggi’s clocktower and city square. We ordered a soursop and dragonfruit smoothie (Rp. 10.000 / USD $0.68). Our next stop was Sianok Valley, which is a scenic canyon. The cliffs rise up to 150 meters! Our plan was to continue eating after taking in the valley’s views by drone, but we crashed the drone in a bamboo cluster above the cliffs. BIG thank you to Roni and Ujang (of Roni’s Tours) for finding it!

Since we spent all of our time finding the drone, our planned restaurants closed so we resorted to some street food style food! We found a man on the side of the road near Sianok Valley selling some DURIAN! It hits the spot when you are tired and hungry! (Rp. 15.000 / USD $1.02 each)

Stay tuned for the next episode. We will be heading DEEP into Harau Village to experience true Indonesian Kampung cooking! Subscribe and hit the bell icon. Set to “all notifications” so that you don’t miss an episode of our Indonesian series! Thanks for watching!

We are starting our food tour at the beautiful Grand Mosque of West Sumatra before going to a restaurant serving Padang’s most notable dish (or dishes): NASI PADANG! We tasted lots of different rich flavours and different Indonesian spices. Nasi Pandang is a great way to sample lots of different Sumatran dishes. Our entire meal with drinks cost: Rp. 136.400 (USD $9.67).

Padang City is coastal and that means delicious and fresh seafood. We went to a local restaurant nearby for IKAN BAKAR (grilled fish). We ordered a grouper that was marinated in spicy sambal and grilled to perfection. Inside the restaurant, we were given a few small dishes similar to Nasi Padang and a plate of rice. The fish was fresh and quite meaty! Our entire meal cost: Rp. 81.000 (USD $5.74).

We wanted to experience a traditional market in West Sumatra so we visited Pasar Pagi Juanda. It looked like we were a little late to visit the market, which is bustling in the morning, but we got to sample some of Padang’s local fruits like Langsat!

It was time to cool down with a unique drink found in Padang known as Teh Telur (egg tea). What makes this drink very special is that it is made with egg yolk and served with a slice of lime, which you squeeze into the tea. It is sour, bitter and sweet all at the same time. Although it was not our favorite, it was worth a try! The drink cost: Rp. 14.000 each (USD $0.99).

Watching the sunset on one of Padang’s many beaches is popular with tourists and locals alike. Many of the beaches have small drink and food stalls that you can enjoy at the beach, while sitting under an umbrella. We ordered a hot black tea and a hot orange drink (which tasted like Fanta) and enjoyed the sounds of the waves until night time. It was unfortunately raining, but we stayed dry under the umbrella. The drinks cost: Rp. 5000 - 10.000 (USD $0.35 - $0.71).

Something that is common across all of Indonesia is a night time specialty: MARTABAK. Martabak is a thick dough, slathered in butter and stuffed with various ingredients. You can choose between savoury martabak and sweet martabak. We ordered a savoury beef martabak (MARTABAK MESIR) that’s stuffed with various vegetables and served with a spicy soy sauce. These stalls become packed at night time and it is best to visit late at night. Our martabaks cost: Rp. 20.000 each (USD $1.56).
