ONE DAY IN SYRACUSE (ITALY) | 4K 60FPS | A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the East Coast of Sicily

Known as the Pearl of the Greeks, Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa) lies on the east coast of Sicily and, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fascinates with its cultural diversity from 2,700 years of history. In antiquity, Syracuse was one of the most powerful and glamorous metropolises in the Mediterranean world; today, with 123,000 inhabitants, it is a lively provincial city.

The fantastic location in the south-east of Sicily with the offshore island of Ortygia and the numerous sights and ancient excavations from thousands of years of history make Syracuse a special Sicilian attraction. The most important sights are located on Ortygia and form a picturesque ambience amidst Greek, Roman and Baroque architecture - a very worth seeing and unique mixture of different eras.

In my video, I have focused on the urban area and in particular on the wonderful old town centre on the island of Ortygia. Those who know me and my videos know that I am very enthusiastic about old towns. And here, too, I was very fascinated by the old town and the atmosphere. I am happy if I can transfer a little of this fascination and enthusiasm to you when you watch my video.

I hope you will enjoy watching. I would be happy if you give my video a like, leave me a comment and subscribe my channel for further videos. All your feedback helps me a lot, and I can promise you to show all my passion in my upcoming videos as well. Thanks in advance for your support and a big hug!

CATANIA - ITALY: Beach And Town

As the second largest city on the Italian Island of Sicily, Catania is an important economic hub for the country and is actually the 7th largest metropolis by area. With a population of 315,000 and a greater metropolitan population of 767,000, Catania lies on the eastern coast of Sicily directly in-between Pachino in the South and Messina in the North. This city was originally founded as a Greek colony in ancient times and since then has been part of numerous Empires and cultures including the Carthaginians, the Roman Republic, the Ostrogoths and eventually became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
During the Renaissance period, Catania was one of the most influential cities in the country and was known for its rich culture, arts and history. Today, Catania maintains a huge amount of its heritage and culture and offers a plethora of interesting structures and museums such as the Basilica Sant’Agata and the Museo Civici. Furthermore, this charming Sicilian city lies in close proximity to the legendary Mount Eta and offers a great amount of different day trips and outdoor sight-seeing excursions.

The best things to do in Catania:

Cathedral of Catania - It is a simply beautiful structure and is a masterpiece of Norman and Baroque architecture. Located in the centre of the old town, the cathedral can be found in the self-styled Piazza Del Duomo and is in close proximity to many of the other sights.

Ursino Castle - Sicily has several fine castles that serve as remnants from the period of conquest that saw the island change hands from various different ruling factions. Ursino Castle is a relic from the 13th century and was built as part of the Kingdom of Sicily by Emperor Frederick II. Today the castle stands in remarkable condition and all four of its original towers and walls still stand without damage; furthermore, remnants of the surrounding walls can also be seen in the castle grounds. Walk around the castle for some photographic opportunities, but also visit inside to see the fantastic Museo Civico which is housed within the castle walls.

Mount Etna - Catania virtually sits in the shade of the immense Mount Etna, and this active stratovolcano is one of the main tourist attractions of Sicily. Mount Etna stands at a height 3329m and is considered the tallest active volcano in Europe. The most recent eruption was in 2015 and the volcano actually discharged some lava. When travelling to Catania, you cannot pass up on the chance to climb Mount Etna and witness its gaping caldera up close. Various tour operators offer day trips to the Volcano – You can choose to hike, cycle, or even ride an ATV or a jeep – The choice is yours. When at the top of Mount Etna, on a clear day the scenery is unbelievable and you are granted with fantastic views of Sicily.

Piazza Del Duomo - As the main square in Catania, the Piazza Del Duomo has a great deal to offer in terms of attractions. Located in the heart of the city close to the port area, this central square is a regular gathering place for the locals and a great tourist spot. In the centre of the square is the impressive Fontana Dell’Elefante, the Fontana Dell’Amenano, Catania Cathedral and the Palazzo degli Elefanti – All fine pieces of architecture. Furthermore there is a series of cafes and restaurants with ideally situated outside seating so you can have a drink, a bite to eat, and enjoy the fine Sicilian weather. The Piazza Del Duomo is a great place to start a walking tour of Catania, and from here you are in close proximity to many of the main sights.

Teatro Romano - Sicily has several Roman Theatres all of which are in fantastic condition, and the Teatro Romano in Catania is no exception. Located in-between the Benedictine Monastery and Catania Cathedral the theatre is easily accessible and is a great site to visit whilst exploring the historic centre of the city. Created in the 2nd century BC, the theatre features a main seating area and also a smaller Odeon theatre to the left hand side. The seats of the theatre and several other sections are actually created from lava taken from Mount Etna and the structure remains in fantastic condition.

Giardini Bellini/Parco Maestranze - A fine public space for relaxation and enjoying nature, the Giardini Bellini and the Parco Maestranze are located to the west of the Piazza Carlo Alberto in the town centre. The Bellini garden is located at the east side of the park and contains a beautiful fountain and several flower beds. Furthermore there is an ornate bandstand and many varieties of tree. Aside from the Giardini Bellini, the Maestranze Park features a series of shaded walking trails covered by luscious forest.

Lido Azzurro - One of the main stretches of beach next to Catania, the Lido Azzurro is a great place to relax, soak up the sun and have some fun. This fantastic beach is located approximately 15 minutes to the south of Catania in close proximity to the port and harbour.

In today's Vlog I take you along and show you what is so special about Marzamemi. All the action happens around the Piazza Regina Margherita, in the middle of the Tonnara. I always make sure to include tips on the best things to do, best local Sicilian food to try, and sights to see in all of my vlogs, so I hope you can take some inspiration from this video.

Why are ALL the BEACHES LIKE THIS in SICILY, Italy? ???????? Welcome to Giardini Naxos

We're having a beach day in Sicily! We're in the beach town of Giardini Naxos and spending the day at the beach.

One thing we've noticed about Sicilian and Italian beaches is that the main beaches seems to be almost entirely taken up by beach chairs and beach clubs and in high season are absolutely packed with people. We haven't seen this much in the rest of the world.

We spend the day at the beach and rent chairs for 25 Euro (2 chairs and an umbrella) at a beach club called La Nike Beach. We take a swim in the Mediterranean and enjoy the day relaxing.

Later we take you back to the small apartment we rented to give a tour.
Book it here:

Lastly we head out to dinner to try some Sicilian style pastas we haven't had yet. We went to a place called la Trinacria where we had Pasta alla Norma and Pesto di Pistacchio.

###PACHINO | SICILIA | 4K DRONE FOOTAGE###

The name derives from the Phoenician pachum , which means guard. According to Fazello, the origin would instead derive from the ancient Greek pachys , which means abundant, fertile. There are other theories that trace its meaning back to Pachys Oinos , which means land abundant with wine, or, referring to the island of Capo Passero, to Pacheia Nesos , or island with a large circumference. The promontory of Pachino was formed in the Cretaceous period (more than 70 million years ago). It seems that the Promontorium Pachyni was inhabited since the first prehistoric times, even if not many testimonies remain of these presences: about 10,000 years ago the Corruggi cave was inhabited , in which many archaeological finds were found, which are largely preserved in the Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum of Syracuse. These are scrapers, knives, spears, awls, needles and other everyday items. From the Corruggi and Fico caves, during the Neolithic period (between 8000 and 1500 BC), man moved on to live in caves (one of the best known in this area is that of Calafarina). Subsequently, in the Iron, Copper and Bronze Ages, until the arrival of the Sicilians, the rock dwellings moved to the nearby area called Cugni di Calafarina. Here villages and necropolises were born, a dolmen for the deceased and an underground oven for working metals, the remains of which, brought to light by Paolo Orsi, are still clearly visible and fairly well preserved.
Antiquity

In 750 BC, the territory of Pachino was inhabited by Phoenicians, Punics and Greeks. From 200 to 400 AD, the area was dominated by the Romans , who made it a center of commercial activity and colonization. Agriculture developed considerably with them, especially the cultivation of vines and wheat . In the Hellenistic period, some temples were built, one of which was dedicated to Apollo Libystino. Even today the remains of a rural votive temple remain in the Cugni district, a locality where the rails of the Via Elorina were traced, still clearly visible on the rock. Contrada Cugni, due to the high concentration of ancient remains, appears to be a sort of archaeological park .
Middle Ages

After the Romans, the Byzantines arrived (from 300 to 800), then the Arabs (from 800 to 1090) and finally the Normans. The Arabs gave the name to the hamlet of Marzamemi, in which they built the tuna fishery, which remained functional until the fifties, introduced the cultivation of citrus fruits , reclaimed the countryside, completed the Torre Xibini aqueduct, built the salt marshes and the Senia wells for the irrigation of the fields (still functioning), one of which at the gates of Marzamemi, known as u puzzu de quattru uocchi, used over the centuries, even on an industrial level, by different peoples, including pirates. The decline of the city begins with the Normans, the Aragonese and the Angevins. In this period the fortifications of Torre Xibini and Torre Fano were erected against the pirate invasions of the Turks.
Modern age

From 1583 to 1714, a hundred new feudal lands were born in Sicily. In this period there was a substantial change in the geography of the Netino countryside, with the foundation of Pachino and Portopalo in the coastal area between the tuna traps of Marzamemi and Capo Passero and the ports of Portopalo and della Marza. The history of the current Pachino begins when, in 1734, the Starrabbas of Piazza Armerina, owners of the Scibini and Bimmisca fiefdoms and, as such, having the baronial title on these fiefdoms as well as that of princes of Giardinelli, decided to reside in the territory to better look after their interests. To this end, the brothers Gaetano and Vincenzo Starrabba asked, in 1758, Charles III of Bourbon and, subsequently, in 1760, Ferdinand IV of the Two Sicilies for authorization to found a city (licentia populandi ), decree which was issued in Naples, on 21 July 1760, and which was made executive on 1 December 1760, thus obtaining the investiture of the title of Baron of the newborn feud. On 10 July 1943, in the stretch of coast that goes from Licata to Pachino, it began with the landing in Sicily by the Allies. The attack on Italy was decided by the Americans and the British during the Casablanca Conference; the planning and organization were entrusted to the general. Operation Husky constituted one of the largest landings of the Second World War, it allowed the return of the Anglo-Saxon powers to Europe and the attack on the weaker Axis power.
Maltese colony

Prince Ferdinand I wanted to implement the conditions of the Royal Decree. He therefore invited the Maltese neighbors to populate the new country and more than thirty families accepted the invitation.
