Most Visitors Overlook Dzibilchaltún's Rarest Treasures

Just 10 miles north of Mérida, Dzibilchaltún is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Yucatán, Mexico. The site is often thought of as a little brother to larger ceremonial centers like Chichén Itzá or Uxmal, but this is far from the whole story.

Given that people still live just a couple hundred meters from the ancient temples of their ancestors, Dzibilchaltún is one of the longest continuously inhabited settlements in the entire American continent.

The Temple of the Seven Dolls is the most famous structure in Dzibilchaltún. The striking temple received its name when in the 1950s archaeologists discovered seven small figures buried within the structure.

Aside from its architectural beauty, the temple is also famous for its sunrise on the spring equinox (March 21), during which the sun passes directly through its doorway. This event typically attracts thousands of spectators.

After the Xlacah cenote and a colonial-era chapel, most visitors don't often venture much deeper into the site — making quick work of Dzibilchaltún and limiting their visit to around an hour or so.

But behind Dzibilchaltún’s central plaza and off the beaten path of the Sac-Be lay several structures of great interest, including residential complexes and even a Mesoamerican Ballcourt.

Walking through these jungle paths is fun and affords the opportunity to come upon structures few ever see, to say nothing of the site's exuberant wildlife. Some of the most stunning birds commonly seen at Dzibilchaltún include Yucatán Jays and the Mot Mot or Pajaro T’Ho.

Archaeologists are currently working in the southwest quadrant of the site to restore several large structures, including Temple 46, which appears to date to the 8th or 9th century.

These structures bear evidence of having been erected atop older existing temples, a practice widespread in Mesoamerica. Note the niches on the facade, which were almost surely decorated with stucco masks depicting either the rain god Chaac, the sky god Itzamná, or the sun god Kín.

Because this type of ornamentation was made of stucco, relatively few examples of these types of masks survive to this day… though for example those in nearby Acanceh, as well as in Kohunlich Quintana Roo are remarkably well preserved. Like the rest of the temple, these masks would have been covered in plaster and painted in bright colors… nothing like the “ruins” we see today.

Within Dzibilchaltún’ss structures, archaeologists have found interior chambers with puzzling inscriptions.

For example, back in 1989, archaeologists found a tomb belonging to, and forgive my Mayan, Kalonché Uk’uuw Chan Chaahk or “Lord of the Dominion of the Ka’n in Ho.”

This is puzzling as the logical conclusion is that the lord of T’Ho resided and was buried in Dzibilchaltún… not T’Ho (ancient Mérida) itself.

Since that time, other inscriptions making reference to this lineage have been found, including
inscriptions on stele and even on the bones of deer. Moreover, ongoing research seems only to give further credence to this view.

One possible explanation is that Dzibilchaltún is the true T’Ho (or seat of power of the Ho) and that ancient Mérida ought to be referred to as Ichcanzijó instead of using these two names interchangeably as has been the custom.

Then again, some argue Ichcanzijó held control over its surrounding region, especially during the post-Classic, while others argue this role belonged to Dzibilchaltún, or perhaps even Caucel or Komchen.

But as with all archaeological sources, it is important to understand that what we see is but a snapshot in time and not the full story.

By the time Europeans arrived in Yucatán and after the fall of the league of Mayapán, the area surrounding Mérida — including Dzibilchaltún — was part of a chiefdom called Chakan, ruled by a lord living in Caucel.

Admittance to the archaeological site also includes the remarkable onsite museum, which houses several impressive artifacts.

Entrance to Dziblichatún costs 282 pesos but is free for Yucatecan residents on Sundays. The site's facilities are quite good with clean bathrooms, lockers, and ample parking for 25 pesos.

Though it is sad that it's no longer possible to climb or enter the Temple of the Seven Dolls, most of the structures at Dzibilchaltún do not have this restriction. On a personal note, being from Mérida, Dzibilchaltún has always seemed comforting and reassuring… like some sort of totem of permanence… it was here long before I got here and will hopefully always be.

NOTE: All aerial footage of Dzibilchaltún was filmed from outside the site itself and digitally enhanced.

Wholesale market in Oxkutzcab

The wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Oxkutzcab is one of the largest daily markets in the Yucatan. People come from all over to buy smaller quantities for resale in their area. We passed lots of orchards and farms in the area as it has rich soils (once you clear the rocks) and abundant underground water close to the surface. It is interesting the most common pepper here is the Habanero.

To the center of the earth - Mexico, Loltun Cave - Ep14 -Travel,vlog,calatorii

Loltun Cave is a cave in the Yucatán, approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Oxkutzcab. The cave contains paintings attributed to the Maya civilization from the Late Preclassic Era or even older. The name is Mayan for Flower Stone (Lol-Tun).
This cave is about two kilometers in length. Inside Loltún there is evidence that confirms human occupation such as recovered bones of mammoth, bison, cats, and deer remains from the pleistocene.

Mercado Municipal Lucas de Gálvez, Mérida, Yucatán, México

We love this market! It is such a great place to visit, eat and shop.

If you are ever in Mérida, this is a must-visit place. Stop and have a torta or a taco and just watch, smell and listen. It is truly one of my favorite mercados in the world.

This video is simply me walking around for an hour or so. I start a few blocks away from the actual market. The area is called Centro.

Enjoy!

Yucatan
Yucatan is conveniently located with extremely easy access. Its strategic location places it 36 hours by sea and 1.5 hours by plane from the United States.

Its infrastructure is among the best found in Mexico, with a rapid, efficient and economic transportation and logistics systems to facilitate all operations. Transportation costs from Yucatan to the U.S. are 20% less when purchased in Mexico or from Central America to similar destinations.

The State of Yucatan is bordered on the north and west by the Gulf of Mexico, on the east with the State of Quintana Roo and on the west and southwest with the State of Campeche.

It is truly a privileged geographic position, with its position on the Gulf of Mexico allowing access to the coasts of the southern United States. In fact, the most important cities of Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi are from 90 to 120 minutes flight from the international airport of Merida, capital of the State of Yucatan.

As for lodging, Merida offers multiple options according to the event: from modern to traditional hotels, henequen haciendas now converted into gran tourism class hotels, and beach hotels. Large congresses can find their place here, as well as conventions and expositions.

Merida is among the most secure and safest cities in all of Mexico, not to mention our special police division for tourists, assisting them all the time.

Merida
THE WHITE CITY

Capital of the state of Yucatan, Merida is known as the white city for its clean streets, houses and people, and it is an obligatory starting and finishing point for those visiting the state of Yucatan.

It was founded by the Spanish in 1542 on the remains of the ancient Mayan settlement of Ichcaanzihó, and was named by the conquistadores after the city of Merida in Spain.

The city was laid out according to Spanish traditions, and the sacred stones of the native temples were used to build houses and buildings for the conquistadores, as well as temples to the new Christian faith.

In Merida the old and the new, respect for inherited tradition and modern urban development blend with originality and grandeur. The traveller can find a whole range of possibilities walking the streets and visiting points of interest such as museums, parks, markets, malls and stores selling handcrafts and traditional clothing.

Merida is well known for its hospitality. Its population is one of the most friendly, kindness and warmth of Mexico.

Merida has all the tourist might require to complete his enjoyment of this beautiful Mexican provincial city.

Autumn weather in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula is hot, in general 86º -68º F ( 30º C ,20º C) , with occasional tropical rain showers. It is recommended you wear informal/casual work clothing, and comfortable walking shoes for the tours.

Most mayor credit cards are accepted in Mexico at all hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and stores. There are several banks and ATM close to the hotels.

A passport is required to enter the country as well as a tourist visa that will be issued at your city's Mexican Consulate or through the airline that you will be flying. Very few nationalities require a visa to enter Mexico.

Tortillerias in the Yucatan Pueblos of Mexico

In the pueblos of Yucatan, there are no supermarkets like you'd find in a larger town or city. The closest supermarket to me is about 30km away in Oxkutzcab.

Instead, the pueblos have small neighborhood stores called Tiendas that might be 15m2 to 20m2 and they have the basics. Sort of like a convenience store, except even smaller. These stores would not have meat, because you get that from the butcher who kills a cow every few days and only sells fresh meat. They would have eggs, and a few items of produce and bread and lots of sweets. My pueblo has about 3,000 people and probably 50 tiendas. It is planned that the tienda is close enough that you can walk to it because every day you go and get what you need that day.

Besides the tiendas, every pueblo will have many Tortillerias. Again, they are located in neighborhoods so you can walk every day and get what you need. The idea of buying a week's worth of anything is alien to these Maya people.

I go into the pueblo here once or twice a week, to get eggs and tomatoes and potatoes and cold drinks. I take Logan my dog with me, and he stays in the truck and loves to bark at the dogs along the way.

And every time we go, as we're returning home, we stop at the last tortilleria to get 5 pesos of fresh, hot, tortillas. (that's about 30 or 35 tortillas for about 25 cents). Logan eats 2/3 of them and I eat 1/3 while we're driving back to the ranch.

I thought it would be interesting to see how they do it. More or less, they are making tortillas all day long because the families need them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The biggest MERCADO in Merida, LUCAS DE GALVEZ

I love shopping at Mercados in Merida, but Mercado Lucas de Galvez is the biggest Mercado in Merida Mexico, and I find it so intimidating. That does not stop me from going and getting some of the most delicious and fresh produce I have ever experienced. So I am taking you through the steps I take to get ready for shopping in a market full of people and that is basically a maze. I drew a map to give you an idea of the layout and included as many suggestions as I could. If you have any questions, let me know!
