【4K】Rotterdam, Netherlands

Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland in the western part of the Netherlands, on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas. The urban area of the city is more than 200 square kilometers and the port area is more than 100 square kilometers. The urban population has a population of 570,000, including approximately 1.02 million in the surrounding satellite cities. Rotterdam's name comes from the small river Rotter of the Nieuwe Maas in the city center and the Dutch word Dam (dam). Rotterdam has long been Europe's largest seaport. In terms of container traffic, it was the world's largest port in the 1880s and ranked 10th in the world now.
Rotterdam is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Maas rivers in Europe. Rotterdam is located in the Dutch province of South Holland, on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas. Except for the larger old city hall, Rotterdam's famous buildings are all modern. Therefore, it is known as 'Europe's more modern city'. Ascend the 185 meters high tower called the 'European Mast' to get a bird's eye view of the city.
The entire city is spread out on both banks of the Maas River, about 25 kilometers from the sea to the north, with new waterways connected to the sea. The waters of the port area are deep and wide, and inland navigation vessels can pass unimpeded. The deep water terminal of the outer port can berth giant cargo ships and super tankers. Rotterdam is an important port connecting the five continents of Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Australia, and is known as the 'gateway to Europe'. Rotterdam is flat and located in the lower part of the Netherlands. The satellite city of Alexandria in the northeast is 6.7 meters below sea level, which is the lowest point in the Netherlands. There are 175,000 residents there. The climate of Rotterdam is mild in winter and cool in summer. January is the coldest with an average temperature of 1°C, and July is the hottest with an average temperature of 17°C and annual precipitation of 700 mm.

During the Second World War, Rotterdam suffered a devastating blow. On May 14, 1940, the Luftwaffe bombed the city indiscriminately, and the entire city center and large areas in the east were completely destroyed. Many public buildings including the St. Lawrence Cathedral built in the 15th century were bombed into pieces. Only the municipal government, the General Post Office, the Stock Exchange, and the Museum survived. Rotterdam’s Vaal Airport, the first civil airport in Europe at the time, was also destroyed. In the autumn of 1944, when the Germans retreated, they also wrecked the city facilities. For example, the ocean freighter terminal area with a total length of more than 7,700 meters and about 40% of the terminal equipment were damaged.
After the war, the municipality began to implement the reconstruction plan, the port facility was rebuilt in 1949, and maritime transportation was gradually restored. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Port of Botlake and the petrochemical zone were built. The Bell River, which was 23 meters deep, 400-600 meters wide, and 12 kilometers long, was excavated, and Europort Port was built. The port has advanced equipment, with mechanized loading and unloading terminals, large warehouses and cold storage, and it is one of the world's largest container ports (others are Hong Kong, Singapore, Kaohsiung, New York, etc.). The port can berth 300,000 to 500,000 tons of giant oil tankers. The bulk of imported and transited goods include petroleum, petroleum products, ore, coal, grain, chemical fertilizers, etc. The main targets of import and export are Germany, Britain, France, Italy and other EU countries.

Stepping into Rotterdam is like being in a new big city. Its urban construction plan is implemented in accordance with the new layout after the Second World War. The buildings are basically newly built after the war, with novel and unique appearances, mostly Western European styles, unique shapes and colorful. There are large-scale banks, insurance companies and international trade centers in the urban area. In the old city, many street pavements are paved with stones, retaining the style and appearance of hundreds of years ago.

Rotterdam is also a famous tourist city, it receives many tourists from all over the world every day. There are many museums, galleries, parks, libraries, cinemas and concert halls in the city.

*The Netherlands* is a country located in northwestern Europe with overseas territories in the Caribbean. It borders Germany to the east, and Belgium to the south, with a North Sea coastline to the north and west. The country's official language is Dutch, with West Frisian as a secondary official language in the province of Friesland. Dutch, English and Papiamento are official in the Caribbean territories. The four largest cities in the Netherlands are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Amsterdam is the country's most populous city and the nominal capital. Netherlands literally means lower countries in reference to its low elevation and flat topography, with nearly 26% falling below sea level. With a population of 17.8 million people, all living within a total area of 41,850 km2 (16,160 sq mi)—of which the land area is 33,500 km2—the Netherlands is the 16th most densely populated country in the world and the second-most densely populated country in the European Union, with a density of 531 people per square kilometre.

*Rotterdam* is the second largest city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is in the province of South Holland, part of the North Sea mouth of the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta, via the New Meuse inland shipping channel, dug to connect to the Meuse first, but now to the Rhine instead. Rotterdam's history goes back to 1270, when a dam was constructed in the Rotte. In 1340, Rotterdam was granted city rights by William IV, Count of Holland. The Rotterdam–The Hague metropolitan area, with a population of approximately 2.7 million, is the 10th-largest in the European Union and the most populous in the country. A major logistic and economic centre, Rotterdam is Europe's largest seaport. In 2022, Rotterdam had a population of 655,468 and is home to over 180 different nationalities.

*Rotterdam Center* is known locally as the Stadsdriehoek (City Triangle), which it lends to its historical shape. Rotterdam, being a rather infamous target of Nazi bombing at the start of the Second World War, retains hardly anything of its once historic city centre, barring some parts of the street layouts. Modernly, the Stadsdriehoek has left many of its functionality as a city centre to the Cool in its south, which became a notable hotspot for nightlife and shopping after the war. Most of Rotterdam's major sights are in the Centrum, including the Euromast, Lijnbaan shopping mall, Coolsingel, Erasmusbrug and the Saint-Lawrence Church.

*Erasmus Bridge* is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge, construction began in 1986 and was completed in 1996. It crosses the Nieuwe Maas in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. The bridge was named in 1992 after Desiderius Erasmus, a prominent Christian Renaissance humanist also known as Erasmus of Rotterdam. The Erasmus Bridge is Rotterdam's most important landmark and is even part of the city's official logo. The 802-metre-long bridge across the New Meuse was designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996. The cable-stayed bridge section has a single 139-metre-high asymmetrical pale blue pylon with a prominent horizontal base, earning the bridge its nickname The Swan.

*Williams Bridge* was completed in 1981, designed by C. Veerling and named after King Willem III of the Netherlands. It replaced an older bridge that had been opened in 1879 but was severely outdated by the time the decision was made to build a new one. Because of the intensity of the traffic using the old bridge, it was decided to build the new one 150 metres upstream to avoid upsetting the daily flow of traffic across the river. After the completion of the new bridge, the old one was demolished. The Willemsbrug is a cable-stayed bridge with a total span of about 318 meters. It is painted in a red color which puts it in sharp contrast with the light blue painted Erasmus Bridge.

Wikipedia on Rotterdam:
Rotterdam (/ˈrɒtərdæm/ or /ˌrɒtərˈdæm/;[8][9] Dutch: [ˌrɔtərˈdɑm] ( listen)) is a city in the Netherlands, located in South Holland, within the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt river delta at the North Sea. Its history goes back to 1270 when a dam was constructed in the Rotte river by people settled around it for safety. In 1340 Rotterdam was granted city rights by the Count of Holland[10] and slowly grew into a major logistic and economic centre. Nowadays it is home to Europe's largest port and has a population of 633,471 (2014, city proper), ranking second in the Netherlands. The Greater Rijnmond area is home to approximately 1.4 million people[11] and the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Area makes for the 168th most populous urban area in the world. Rotterdam is part of the yet larger Randstad conurbation with a total population of 7,100,000.
The city of Rotterdam is known for the Erasmus University, riverside setting, lively cultural life and its maritime heritage. The near-complete destruction of Rotterdam's city centre during World War II (known as the Rotterdam Blitz) has resulted in a varied architectural landscape including sky-scrapers, which are an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities. Rotterdam is home to some world-famous architecture from renowned architects like Rem Koolhaas, Piet Blom, Ben van Berkel and others. Recently Rotterdam was listed eighth in The Rough Guide Top 10 Cities to Visit[12] and fifth in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2016 and was voted 2015 European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism.[13]
The port of Rotterdam is the largest cargo port in Europe and the 10th largest in the world. Rotterdam's logistic success is based on its strategic location on the North Sea, directly at the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse) channel leading into the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta. The rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt give waterway access into the heart of Western Europe, including the highly industrialized Ruhr region. The extensive distribution system including rail, roads and waterways have earned Rotterdam the nickname Gateway to Europe, and, conversely; Gateway to the World in Europe.

The narrow roads of Holland in 1925 in color! [AI restored and colorized]

Oorspronkelijke titel: Wegenfilm, Holland Op Zijn Smalst in 1925.

This very interesting film takes us along the narrow roads of Holland almost a century ago during the first years of the motor car. In these years there were many locations where motorists had to pay toll. Also the film clearly shows that traffic was far from safe almost a century ago.
The locations are described below and can also be viewed while watching the film by pressing the CC captions button.

The nice music is by the Belgian pianist Franco Di Nitto and titled Eternity followed by Jeugd (Jeunesse).
