Ouazzane (also Ouezzane) (Berber: ⵡⴰⵣⵣⴰⵏ, Arabic: وزان) is a town in northern Morocco, with a population of 59,606 recorded in the 2014 Moroccan census.
The city is well known in Morocco and throughout the Islamic world as a spiritual capital for it was home for many of the pillars of Sufism. It has been known also as Dar Dmana (House of Safety) due to its containing the tomb of the 18th-century Idrisi Sharif.
Many Jews of Morocco consider Ouazzane to be a holy city and make pilgrimages there to venerate the tomb of several marabouts (Moroccan saints), particularly moul Anrhaz, the local name for Rabbi Amram ben Diwan, an eighteenth-century rabbi who lived in the city and whose burial site is associated with a number of miracles.
During the Rif rebellion (leader Abd el Krim) in 1925 -1926 Ouazzane was an important supply base for the French Army. Ouazzane was connected by a 600 mm gauge narrow gauge railway via Ain Dfali, Mechra Bel Ksiri to Port Lyautey, now Kenitra, forming part of the 1912–1914 French built extensive narrow gauge network of Chemins de fer Militaires du Maroc, the largest 600 mm gauge network that ever existed in Africa with a total length of more than 1702 kilometres.

Exploring OUAZZANE Medina & Enjoying A Home-cooked Tagine | A Morocco Motorhome Journey
On our way to Meknes, we found a small roadside cafe where the owners serve up delicious tagines and as a bonus allow you to spend the night next to the restaurant! From there it was a short drive to the emerald city of Ouazzane - where we spent a delightful couple of hours strolling the streets and markets.

In December 2022 I travelled to Morocco with my girlfriend. We landed in Agadir, rented a car and deep-explored the Souss-Massa and the Drâa-Tafilalet regions.
The places we visited will forever remain imprinted in our minds, and the memories will remain in our hearts. Les Gorges d’Aït Mansour (the thumbnail of this video), the painted rocks in Tafraute, the stronghold-barn Agadir Tasguent, the Zagora and Merzouga desert (where we spent the New Year's Eve), Les Gorges de Todra, Ait Ben Addu and, of course, Marrakech.
Marrakech... I thought I would have hated it. I was so wrong.

لقبت بباريس الصغرى وريحانة الجبال والمدينة الحصينة، وغالبا ما يقرن اسمها بـ دار الضمانة، هي مدينة وزان التي لا يتفق المؤرخون لها على أصل تسميتها لقدمها في التاريخ. وارتبطت في أذهان المغاربة بقداسة أرضها وبركتها، في نوع من التصديق والإذعان لقوتها الروحية.
لا تزال مدينة وزان تفرض إشعاعها الديني عبر بوابة السياحة الدينية واحتضان موسم مولاي عبد الله الشريف وملتقيات دولية حول التصوف والسماع الصوفي (الإنشاد). وتمتاز بموروث ثقافي خاص وتسمى المدينة الحصينة لخلوها من الحانات ولأنها شكلت على مر العصور ملتقى للطرق، في حين لم تُحط بأسوار ولا بوابات محصنة، ومثّلت دار ضمان (حصنا آمنا) لمن دخلها من الثوار والمتمردين.
وتشتهر المدينة بمعالمها المتعددة مثل ضريح مولاي عبد الله الشريف والحمام القديم والمسجد والمسيد (مدرسة أو كُتّاب لتعليم القرآن) والفرن، وساحة الزاوية والأقواس والدروب المحيطة بالزاوية، بالإضافة إلى ضريح مولاي التهامي الذي يعد مزارا بارزا ضمن مزارات عشاق التصوف والسياحة الدينية.
وتمتاز وزان بمعلمة باب فَتحة التي تعود إلى القرن السابع عشر وباب الجْمُوعة (باللهجة المحلية) وسوق الحايك الذي يحفظ نمط النسج القديم والسويقة وحي الملاح (ملجأ المهجرين اليهود من الأندلس).
وتحتفظ كل دروب وزان بمعمار قديم وبعضها بنمط العمارة الإسلامية التي تمتاز بانفتاح النوافذ لداخل الدار، ومن معالمها الحديثة مبنى الساعة بساحة المدينة بني على عهد الحماية الفرنسية.

Morocco's Most Unique City
Before going to Morocco, I knew it was a highly-visited place. I think what impressed me the most was just how every city is so different from the others. That was definitely the case for Fes, which I was lucky enough to explore around with my friend Kamal, a local whom I quickly became good friends with.
Fes is one of the most unique places I have ever visited and it was certainly a culture shock to see how the leather was made here. The smell was absolutely atrocious and I could not believe people could work with that kind of smell. Seeing donkeys transporting the merchandise was undoubtedly a surprise. I felt like I went back in time.
I was able to spend 10 days in Morocco visiting Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech and i must say Fes, and the medina of Fes el bali (the largest in the world) were some of the most memorable days of my travels. You will also find the oldest university in the world here in Morocco's most historic capital.
