Orvieto, Italy- a Charming Hilltop Town! Located in Umbria Italy
Orvieto is located in the Umbria Region of Italy and was the perfect stop for us to explore as we traveled from Rome to Florence. Orvieto was the alternate offered to our tour group since the visit inside the colosseum was canceled. This town has so much to see I was disappointed we only had about 1-1/2 hour to roam the town. The Orvieto Cathedral: Duomo Di Orvieto was the most stunning cathedral I have ever seen!
Orvieto is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Italy dating back to the Etruscan civilization that settled here in the 9th century. I recently learned that there is a series of tunnels and caves all underneath Orvieto available for touring.

Duomo di Orvieto, dating from 1290, has a mosaic facade and houses a marble Pietà sculpture. The Pozzo di San Patrizio is a 16th-century well shaft with a double spiral staircase. To get to Orvieto, in the Umbria region of Italy, you'll go to the busy Roma Termini train station in Rome. The train ride itself is about an hour and 15 minutes from Rome to Orvieto.
You'll enjoy the day trip to Orvieto, strolling the streets, which are full of local shops and big international stores. Plus, the restaurants, bars, and cafes will serve delicious Italian dishes. Many extend their service to patios outside, even in the winter months (when temperatures are still somewhat mild).
You can explore Orvieto's underground labyrinth of caves and tunnels, and also St. Patrick's Well.
The day trip to Orvieto also involves a ride up a funicular (for only 1.50 Euro).
