Oria is a small town of about 15,000 inhabitants, located in Salento, in the province of Brindisi, Italy. Of all the centro storico we visited, this is the one that seemed the most rustic or authentic. Built on a hill, the historic village overlooks the entire town and valley. With its winding and uphill streets, its old houses with decrepit paintings, its huge castle, Oria looks like a real medieval village. We are far from the white villages of the Itria valley!

We visited Lecce, Otranto, Polignano a Mare, Cisternino & Locorotondo, the most beautiful villages in Italy, Mesagne, Hotel Tenuta Moreno, Matera (Basilicata Region), Massafra, Valle D'Itria, Alberobello with its trulli houses, Ostuni, Brindisi (Airport). ), Martina Franca, Oria. In Lecce you will find beautiful Baroque buildings with beautiful squares such as Piazza del Duomo and the Basilica Basilca di Santa Croce and the Roman Amphitheater. Otranto has a turbulent history. It was the first place conquered by the Turks in 1480. Many Italians died and you can see around 800 bones and skeletons of Italians who lost the battle with the Turks in the Cappella dei Martiri (Chapel of the Martyrs) in the cathedral of Otranto. In Oria there is a crypt in which mummies are exhibited. Oria also contains a medieval castle and a cathedral.

POLIGNANO A MARE, birthplace of 'Volare' and the mummies of Oria, Puglia, Italy Travel
Polignano a Mare is without a doubt one of the most picturesque towns on the coast of Puglia. The beating heart of the beautiful medieval center is the charming Piazza dell'Orologio, but be sure to take the time to wander around the maze of old alleys in the historic center, which is built on a series of rugged cliffs. Around Santo Stefano, a small medieval church on Via Porto, you will find a lot of 'graffiti': beautiful lines or complete poems on the wall or, as in the house in the photo below, on the stairs! Modugno was born in Polignano a Mare in 1928. There is a (three meters high!) statue of the most famous resident Polignano has ever known, at the Lungomare Domenico Modugno named after him. With Volare (the official title is Nel blu dipinto di blu), the previously unknown singer won the Festival di Sanremo in 1958, after which his hit slowly conquered the entire world and became a symbol for Italian music in general. In the bay deep below the old Roman bridge (Via San Vito), a bay carved into the rocks awaits with a small stretch of pebble beach, officially called Lama Monachile but also called Cala Porto by the locals. Located to the south-west of Brindisi, in the northern part of the Salento peninsula, Oria is an ancient Messapian city. Built over three hills, the main sight is the castle, which was primarily constructed by Frederick II with various additions over the ages. The 18th Century Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo, features a marble polychrome dome, and houses a number of notable artworks. Oria was home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in Italy, and there remains a Jewish Quarter accessed via the Hebrew Gate.Entered from inside the cathedral. in its crypt, is an unusual museum. The crypt was built in 1484 in memory of all those who had not returned from the battle against the Turks in Otranto. It is a historical museum, but contains the mummified bodies of 11 monks, preserved in the last 200 years or so, hence the title Cripta delle Mummie.

Later, houses and monasteries were carved out and inhabited by monks. Later by the villagers and lived together in poor conditions with large poor families and their herd animals. The death rate was high. It took until 1960 before the last residents left their sassi. Today the houses have been renovated into hotels and restaurants. Materi is a must see place. It is not without reason that Matera became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the European Capital of Culture in 2019.
