And then we head to the beach town of Zandvoort aan Zee... where families frolic on the foamy beaches of the North Sea. There is a lot to see and do in this country - when you get outside of Amsterdam. 10 Most Depressing Cities in Europe
What are the most depressing cities to live in Europe? The idea that a part of Europe, the continent of great culture, exquisite fashion, delectable cuisine, and a history stretching back centuries can be depressing is almost inconceivable. Yet, there are some depressing cities on the continent. Let's take a look at the 10 most depressing cities in Europe. However, this list is not meant to portray any of those cities, their inhabitants, and the countries of their location in any bad light. It’s just for education and information purposes.
10. Pristina, Kosovo
We begin in this capital of Kosovo, a technically disputed area but believed to be a de facto autonomous nation in South-Eastern Europe. Kosovo announced its independence from Serbia in February 2008 following a series of frequent violent engagements that lasted many years. Despite strong Serbian resistance, the UN today recognizes Kosovo as a distinct entity known as the Republic of Kosovo.
But that independence is not without a huge price. Terrorism has become the order of the day in most parts of Kosovo, including its capital city of Pristina. That’s why visitors are hesitant to visit the city or anywhere near it. The threat of violent and extremism is getting greater in Kosovo. Pristina is certainly a depressing city.
9. Saravejo, Bosnia
Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is another one of the most depressing cities in Europe. Sarajevo is one of the most historically intriguing cities in Europe. It is historically unstable. Just as it is in the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, minefields, undetonated bombs, and explosive remnants from the Yugoslav wars are everywhere in Sarajevo and its surrounding suburbs. This poses a significant threat to the public.
Keep in mind that the places that have not been cleaned out are denoted by yellow caution tape or warning signs.
Pickpockets are a common sight in this city. They’re very active, especially on public transportation and in the city’s historic district. It’s a city with a history of ravaging war which makes it a depressing city.
8. Lodz, Poland
Lodz is Poland's third-largest city and a major industrial hub, with a population of 672,185 people. The city has long been known for its textile industry. The city of Lodz serves as the administrative center of the Lodzkie Voivodeship.
It’s listed among the most depressing cities in Europe due to issues relating to robbery, automobile theft, car break-ins, car snatchings, and vandalism as well as insults among other things. Bribery is a minor but noticeable issue in Lodz. A typical heist used by criminals is to work in gangs and create artificial crowds on public transportation such as buses and trams in order to divert their victims' attention before picking their pockets. Also, don’t leave your stuff unattended, and keep your eyes on your wallet when you’re not using it. Crime is what makes Lodz a miserable place to live.
7. Kouvola, Finland
Kouvola is a little town nestled between two major cities. It’s a little more than an hour to Helsinki and two hours to St. Petersburg. Even if you can view the majestic Pohjola building via the train glass, you won't be able to see any of Kouvola's 450 lakes or the River Kymijoki from the train window.
Kouvola is usually considered a safe city. Yet, it has a melancholy atmosphere because the people who live here are fairly cautious in their interactions with nature. Don't get me wrong, not everyone is like this, and you may come across folks who are upbeat and pleasant. But it does make the overall atmosphere a bit depressing most times.

We visited Tyrol and attended The Social Travel Summit as part of a project managed by iambassador in partnership with the Tirol Tourist Board, Austrian Tourism Board and Alpbachtal Seenland.
Visit Austria (Tirol) - Tyrol Travel Guide to Alpbachtal Video Transcript:
Today we’re showing you around one of the most picturesque corners in all of Austria: the Alpbachtal Valley located in Tyrol. This was our first time visiting Austria and I don’t think we could have chosen a better place to start. While we only had 3 days in this region, we managed to pack lots of time in the mountains, sample the local cuisine and befriend more than one cow along the way. The following is our mini-travel guide to Alpbachtal:
After getting settled into our farmhouse it was time for lunch and boy were we hungry. We drove to Brandenberg where we ate at Kaiserhaus, a restaurant and guesthouse tucked out in nature.
Tyrolean Food at Kaiserhaus Gasthof - Seeing as this was our first day in Tyrol, we wanted to sample some Tyrolean food including gamey meats and noodle dishes.
Hiking the Kaiserklamm - This was a really nice walk that followed the course of the river and took us over a series of bridges and tunnels. We sure enjoyed the scenery.
After that we returned back to our town of Reith im Alpbachtal, where we had some more hearty Tyrolean food and listened to a bit of live music.
On day 2, we lucked out with clear blue skies, so after having breakfast in our farmhouse, we drove to the town of Alpbach. Here we got quick e-biking lesson, and set off to tackle the Alps in style.
It wasn’t long before we left the town behind and found ourselves in the middle of nature. We rode up valleys, over streams, through forests, and tackled some pretty steep inclines along the way, but as you can see, the scenery was stunning.
We drove to the nearby village of Kramsach, where we stopped off for - you guessed it - more food! We were famished after all that biking, and we didn’t hold back. We plopped ourselves down at Rohrerhof, where we proceeded to order cappuccinos, massive dessert platters and schnapps. The next attraction: the Tyrolean Farmhouse Museum,
Gondola ride to Wiedersbergerhorn - After a leisurely walk and enjoying the impressive views, something else caught our attention - a mountaintop restaurant with an outdoor terrace!
Almatrieb Cows Come Home Parade - By noon, the festivities were in full swing. But it wasn’t all about cows. There were also craft demonstrations, food stalls, and lots of bands playing for jovial crowds who created their own dance floors.
That sums up our trip to the Alpbachtal Valley in Tyrol - cows, mountains and a whole bunch of delicious food. See you next time in Vienna (Wien).

Croatia (Hrvatska) is a country in Southeast Europe. Croatia shares a beautiful coastline along the Adriatic Sea, and is a major travel destination. Croatia's capital and largest city is Zagreb. Croatia is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Europe, with a total of 20 million annual visitors. Tourism in Croatia is concentrated in the areas along the Adriatic coast and is strongly seasonal. 8 areas in Croatia have been designated national parks, with an additional 11 as nature parks. Studying in Amsterdam? | 10 Things You Need to Know ????????
Welcome to Onwards & Upwards! Do you want to study in Amsterdam? Are you applying for an exchange program (Erasmus, Turing, CSEP, etc) to do a year abroad or a semester in Amsterdam? If so, you've come to the right place.
In this video I explain what I believe are 10 important things you should know if you are considering doing an exchange program or degree in Amsterdam. Lots of my tips involve maximizing the value of your social experience, sort your intentions and expectations about coming to Amsterdam, as well as advice to live a cheaper life as a student out there. The whole list of items in order, without a timestamp (far too much work), are as follows:
1) You'll enjoy yourself much more if you're social and don't make the change too much about studying or achieving very high grades in university. There are many exceptions to this, depending on your life context and living situation.
2) Invest in a good bike, it will be worth it.
3) Take advantage of the good weather still you can, since it passes quickly and the winters are long, somber, chilly, and windy in the Netherlands/Holland, as well as in Amsterdam in particular.
4) Be wary of the general expensiveness of Amsterdam, particularly the city centre. Eat shared meals with friends at home, go to restaurants in smaller villages, or in areas of Amsterdam outside of the Netherlands. Just save the steep cost of alcohol and meals in central Amsterdam for special occasions.
5) Buy 49c (in Euros) beer from Jumbo and Aldi, although the Aldi one is much better. Also, get a 1L bottle of water and remember to bring snacks when going on day-trips to bring around the city when heading into Amsterdam or other Dutch cities and towns.
6) Spend about 60 euro on a Museumcard (museumkaart), which has access to the Rijksmuseum (the national museum of the Netherlands), the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, and many more including museums in other cities around the Netherlands.
7) Get the OV Chipcard (OV-chipkaart) to pay less for public transport such as the trams, buses, and metro. If you are doing your full degree in the Netherlands, you are entitled to free public transport. Look into it.
8) In Uilenstede and other international student campuses have Europeans and students from all around the world. However, they don't have Dutch people living there. If you want to meet and possibly make some Dutch friends, talk to people in your modules/courses in the university and outside as well.
9) There is a student housing crisis in the Netherlands -- where you live is paramount. Uilenstede Campus is the largest student residence in all of Europe with thousands of students calling it home, and it is located a 20-30 minute bicycle ride away to the Museumplein in the centre. Uilenstede housing is supported by government subsidies so the price is better than anywhere else you are likely to find, and the social aspects of living there are superb. Other residences or student halls can be great as well, but more expensive, like the Student Hotel.
Honourable Mention: Dutch desserts are amazing. Make sure to eat some Stroopwafels, waffels, wine gums, Spekkoek (A Layered Spice Cake), delicious cream cakes, and Appelflappen (Apple Beignets).
10) Take adventure of cheap travel around Europe from budget-airlines like
Ryanair, Wizzair, EasyJet, and so on. Why not take a trip out to Italy, Spain, Hungary, or France? And with such good company, you can't go wrong.
