In the Netherlands not far from Amsterdam, on the edges of IJsselmeer lake, lies Volendam and Marken. Volendam is a fishing village well known for its characteristic, authentic houses, sometimes called the pearl of the Zuiderzee, this place is a highly popular tourist destination.
Hop on the Marken express (boat) in Volendam to visit the nearby village of Marken. Marken is known for its characteristic wooden houses and traditional costumes. If you have seen Amsterdam, it is certainly worthwhile to visit in a half day trip Marken and Volendam, and possibly Zaanse Schans to see the beautiful Windmills in Holland. Places of interest:
Stolphoevekerk, Burg. Kolfschotenplein 1. Not open to visitors. The oldest church in Volendam is the wooden Protestant Stolphoevekerk. This National Monument was built in 1658 in the shape of a farmhouse. The lovely little church is still in use.
St. Vincentiuskerk, Kerkepad 1. Open to visitors in the holiday season, otherwise during the weekend. The St. Vincentius church was opened in 1860, after protests from Roman-Catholic worshippers who had been forced for centuries to walk to Edam for their Sunday service.
De Visafslag, Haven 41, (info@devisafslagvolendam.nl),. Open for visits by appointment. The wooden fish auction was built in 1934, but is no longer in use. Now a National Monument, it remains a landmark today, even between the many other wooden houses.
Volendams Museum, Zeestraat 41, (info@volendamsmuseum.nl). 10AM-5PM, only during the holiday season. Historical museum, focusing on the period 1850 -1950, showing traditional costumes and interiors, as well as paintings and other works of art made by artists who visited Volendam. A special mention should be made of the Sigarenbandjeshuisje: over 11 million cigar bands were used to create mosaics on the wall of this room. 3 EUR.
Palingsoundmuseum, Slobbeland 19 (info@smitbokkum.nl) Restaurant Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum houses a small exhibition dedicated to the history of popular music from Volendam, that has been dominating the Dutch charts for more than 40 years.

Places of interest:
This lighthouse on the eastern end of the peninsula is one of the best known in the country. This 1839 structure is 16 meters high and is a National Monument. It can be seen from a long distance, and the site itself offers great views of the IJsselmeer.
Marker Museum In this small museum you can see a traditional Marken house as it would have been decorated in the old days. There's traditional clothing on display and a lot of information on the peninsula's history. Not all information is in English, though. The museum is only opened during the tourist season

Groningen: Groningen is a charming student city in the Northern Netherlands and the perfect base for visiting the Netherlands’ barrier islands.
Schiermonnikoog: Due to the influence of the tides and its location between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea, the island has a climate that is different from that of the mainland. Schiermonnikoog is characterized by diverse landscapes including beaches, dunes, forests, tidal marshes, lakes and tidal flats.
Amsterdam: Visit the world-famous 17th century capital of Holland. Go for a boat tour on the canals, and stroll through Vondelpark. Amsterdam’s oldest houses, are a national treasure. Many of these stunning examples of architecture, found around the city’s Canal Ring, date back to the Dutch Golden Age when a building tax was calculated by the width of a property’s façade.
Dokkum: You don't even have to close your eyes to feel like you've gone back a few centuries!
Burum: In this tiny town, you will find Windlust, a smock mill which was officially reopened in 2014 on Nationale Molendag - yes, the Dutch celebrate a National Mills Day.
Naarden: Naarden is an example of a Spanish star fort, complete with fortified walls and a moat.
Staverden: Staverden received its city rights in 1298 from the German King Rudolph but has never really become a true city. Staverden is officially the smallest city in the Netherlands.
The Hague: The Hague is the heart of Dutch politics where you will find beautiful museums filled with Dutch masterpieces. Visit the historic Binnenhof, or admire Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' at the Mauritshuis. Our favorites include Mesdag’s Panorama and Escher in het Paleis.
Madurodam: Visit Madurodam and discover all of Holland in a few hours. Ever since the opening in 1952 Madurodam has been one of the most iconic places in the Netherlands.
Muiderslot: The Muiderslot Castle is one of Holland’s most picturesque medieval castles.
Scheveningen: Let’s go to the beach! The Pier is one of the most notable icons in Scheveningen. Nearly 400 metres long and 45 metres high, it runs straight into the North Sea and offers a beautiful view of the village. *Video correction: the sun is setting over the North Sea (not the Atlantic!)*
Leiden: Leiden is a picturesque university city with many canals, ‘hofjes’ and museums. Leiden also has its own Hortus Botanicus, an impressive university garden filled with plants from around the world.
Rotterdam: Rotterdam is a city of many faces: a tough port city, a trendy modern city, and a hip artistic city. Check out the Maritime Museum when in Rotterdam to learn about Rotterdam’s role as a port city. Don’t miss a walk over the Erasmus Bridge. At its highest point, the Erasmus bridge is 139-meters tall. Known as the 'Erasmusbrug' in Dutch, the bridge has also been lovingly nicknamed The Swan (‘De Zwaan’) by locals due to the distinctive shape of that one, asymmetrical pylon.

Een dikke week geleden ben ik de 500 abonnees op mijn kanaal gepasseerd, geweldig! Dank aan iedere abonnee, iedereen die wel eens of erg vaak reageert op mijn filmpjes, het wordt enorm gewaardeerd.

Iedere keer wanneer ik een klompenpad loop probeer ik aan het pad een waardering te hangen. Voor mezelf heb ik 10 criteria op een rijtje gezet die ik zelf belangrijk vind bij een wandeling. Dat die criteria niet altijd op elk moment even objectief zijn besef ik ook, het weer speelt mee, je eigen gevoel die dag, je fitheid enz enz. Wanneer ik het gastenboek van de klompenpaden lees zijn de klompenpaden uit mijn top-10 wel absolute toppers.

WORLD WAR 2 ROAD TRIP // Arnhem Netherlands and Bastogne Belgium
As we continue our World War 2 Road Trip around Europe, we visit The Bridge too far in Arnhem Netherlands, and Bastogne, Belgium. Bastogne was a key crossroads in the Battle of the Bulge.
We also visit the town of Foy, where the 101st Airborne held the front line against German soldiers. The foxholes can still be seen today.

Stansted Airport to Oosterbeek via Utrecht | Netherlands
Welcome to my new series and a short tour around the Netherlands. On this my first day, I travel from London Stansted Airport to Oosterbeek near Arnhem, via Eindhoven and Utrecht. I also document my travel in this video also, showing my route on Ryanair over England and over the Netherlands into Eindhoven. Once at Eindhoven Airport, I take the bus from Eindhoven Airport to Eindhoven Railway Station, then a train from Eindhoven Railway Station to Utrecht Centraal. Here I embark on a walking tour or city of the city to discover some of Utrecht’s history, visit Utrecht Cathedral and the Cathedral cloisters, before taking the train from Utrecht Centraal to Oosterbeek. A long and busy day, but very enjoyable.

Cycling 1000km around the Netherlands!
I set off to ride roughly 600miles/1000km around the #Netherlands in a week with just my bike and a few essentials - all to raise money for two UK mental health charities: Mind and Bipolar UK.

After Norway, Ryan and I headed down to the land of the Dutch! We visited several cities across a 2 week span. It was highly enjoyable and we would love to visit again!
Oosterbeek Railway Station, Holland - 29th December, 2012
Oosterbeek Railway Station was opened on 16 May 1845 and is on the Amsterdam--Arnhem railway (Rhijnspoorweg). The station was originally called Oosterbeek Hoog, as there was also a station called Oosterbeek Laag, meaning Lower Oosterbeek. This railway station was located on the Arnhem--Nijmegen railway. The station is the least used on the Amsterdam--Arnhem railway, with less than 600 passengers per day.
This brief bit of footage was taken at night-time but includes the following features: The station platforms, signage, passing VIRM (Verlengd Interregiomaterieel) Electric Units , also called Regiorunners, a passing Deutsche Bahn ICE Train and a Stadsgewestelijk Materieel or SGM NS class 2100 stopping (stoptrein) which is en-route to Ede-Wageningen.
Oosterbeek Arnhem war Cemetery | Operation Market Garden
In this history special video, I visit the Oosterbeek Arnhem war Cemetery near Arnhem in The Netherlands, part of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. All those brave people took part in Operation Market Garden, from 17th to 27th September 1944, Many of whom died on that first day. Two such brave soldiers were Claude and Thomas Gronert, two twin brothers from Cornwall who died a few minutes apart, just five hours after parachuting into Wolfheze a few miles away.
I also visit the grave of flight Lieutenant David Lord, who won his Victoria Cross for piloting his burning aircraft, KG374, whilst dropping supplies to the ground forces. I also talk about the Dakota KP208, which was painted to resemble the Dakota KG374 which David Lord was flying. David Lord is one of three Victoria Cross holders buried in the Oosterbeek Arnhem war Cemetery, part of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The Oosterbeek Arnhem war Cemetery is so well kept and all the graves are in well maintained lines.
The story of Operation Market Garden was told in the film A Bridge too Far, made in 1977 which took place in The Netherlands during World War 2.
