The second-largest lake of Europe, Lake Onega, is located in Karelia. The largest lake of Europe, Lake Ladoga is partly located in Karelia (together with Leningrad Oblast). Wherever there is land, there are dense forests covering the ground.
Karelia has strong cultural connection with Finland and the Karelians, for whom the republic is named, are a Finno-Ugric group very closely related to the Finns. The western part of Karelia is a relatively recent Russian/Soviet conquest from Finland, and a bit of a sore spot for the Finns.

Valamo Monastery - the monastery of the Finnish Orthodox Church. Originally Valamo was placed on an island of lake Ladoga in Karelia but was evacuated whilst in war with the Russians in the 1940s. The monks came with their icons and rebuilt Valamo close to Heinävesi a bit west of Joensuu. The monastery is visited by many Finns, orthodox or not, and is featured in most tourist guides as well. Almost all buildings though are post war and one can't suppress the impression that there is a commercial streak somewhere. However most people come to see the ancient icons from the old Valamo monastery. Boats full of tourists leave during the summer months from Sortavala, Lakhdenpokhya, and Pitkyaranta, as well as big river cruise boats from Saint Petersburg and Moscow. This video was taken on June 28, 2010 during a 10-day Volga-Baltic Waterway River Cruise from Moscow to St.Petersburg with the Nizhny Novgorod river cruise ship, while leaving Kizhi Island (~62° North), a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Lake Onega (second largest lake in Europe after neighboring Lake Ladoga), Karelia, Russian Federation.
It was a real adventure discovering this lonely island of 60-70 inhabitants near the Arctic circle, during a white night, with all the calmness, the friendly seagulls, and the beautiful nature, isolated from the populated rest of the world..

Russia? Take small used banknotes, don't drink homemade vodka, and most importantly: don't stop!
We were warned. But it all came differently! None of the persistent stereotypes were proven right. Not even that all Russians drink until collapse! Instead we probably met more friendly, happy and talkative people in these two weeks on our crazy trip through the Russian Karelia than we ever have. Der Onegasee, zweitgrößter See Europas und fast so groß wie Ostdeutschland.
Wer kennt schon den zweitgrößten See Europas? Der liegt gleich neben dem größten See Europas, dem Ladogasee. Dieser hat allerdings schon fast die Dimensionen eines Meeres. Und wo liegen diese beiden Seen? In Karelien, genauer gesagt in russisch Karelien, östlich von Finnland. Eigentlich gar nicht so weit weg von hier, jedoch in einer ganz anderen Welt.
