LISBON, PORTUGAL | 10 Awesome Things To Do In & Around Lisbon

Lisbon is a vibrant capital city, located in western Portugal on the estuary of the Tagus River. As one of the oldest cities in western Europe, Lisbon has a rich, turbulent history. By the 15th century, the port of Lisbon became one of the most important in the world. But unfortunately, the city center was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. Today, it has been reconstructed into a bustling modern city blended with traditional heritage. In this video, we highlight 10 awesome things to do in Lisbon:

10. Try the traditional food
Things to try include: bacalhau à brás, pastéis de bacalhau, bifana, bifinhos com natas e cogumelos, ginjinha, pastéis de nata

☑️Book a food & wine walking tour:

9. Ride Tram 28
A 7km route connects Martim Moniz Square with Campo Ourique, while passing through Lisbon’s most historic districts. We recommend starting your journey at Campo Ourique and riding it until the end.

8. Experience Fado and the nightlife at Bairro Alto
Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre, known for its expressive and melancholic sound. Recommended bar: Tasca do Chico

7. Visit St. George’s Castle
Castelo de São Jorge stands on top of the tallest hill in Lisbon and served for different purposes throughout history.

☑️ Skip the line with guide:

6. Take in one of the many viewpoints
Lisbon's best viewpoints include: Santa Luzia, Portas do Sol, São Pedro de Alcântara, and Monte Agudo.

5. Explore the highlights of Belém
There are a few things you can’t miss: Torre de Belém, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Tropical Botanical Gardens, Pasteis de Belém bakery, and the Jerónimos Monastery.

4. Walk around the Alfama District
Another great thing to do in Lisbon is to stroll around the Alfama District. This neighborhood was the only one to survive the 1775 earthquake, making it the oldest area of Lisbon.

3. Go on a sunset cruise on the Tagus River
During a two-hour sailing adventure you’ll pass under the iconic San Francisco-lookalike bridge and take in the views of the most impressive monuments in Belém and the historic center.

☑️ Book your sunset cruise with Enjoy Tagus:

2. Day trip to Sintra
At number 2 we have a day trip to the charming town of Sintra. Highlights include the gardens and mansion of Quinta da Regaleira, the Castle of the Moors with its incredible views, and the colorful Pena Palace.

???? Watch Sintra Video:

1. Explore downtown Lisbon on a free walking tour
This area boasts the largest amount of entertainment options, bustling with cultural, gastronomical and leisure alternatives. Make sure to visit the iconic Praça do Comércio, the beautiful Rossio Square, and the bustling Rua Augusta.

Tomar Portugal

Former headquarters of the Order of the Templars, Tomar is a city of great charm, for its artistic and cultural wealth. The maximum exponent is in the Convento de Cristo, one of the most important works of the Renaissance in Portugal.

Templar castle:
Convent of Christ:

Whatever the reason for visiting the city, going up to the Templar castle and discovering the monumental work of the Convento de Cristo is essential. Charola is the oldest part. This Templar oratory was built in the 19th century. XII, as well as the castle, which at the time was the most modern and advanced military device in the kingdom, inspired by the fortifications of the Holy Land. It was transformed into a main chapel during the reconstruction ordered by D. Manuel I, in the 19th century. XVI, when the complex gained the architectural splendor that is still preserved today and which justified its classification as a World Heritage Site.

From the Convent, you can walk down the Mata dos Sete Montes to the historic center. Going down the road, we see the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, a small Renaissance jewel, the work of the Portuguese João de Castilho who also worked at the Convent.

Next, you have to visit Tomar. The oldest, medieval urban area is organized in a cross, oriented by the cardinal points and having a convent at each end. Praça da República, with the Mother Church dedicated to São João Baptista, marks the center, with the hill of Castelo and Convento de Cristo to the west. In the streets around you can find traditional shops and the oldest cafe where you can enjoy the delights of local pastries: almond and chila queijadas and the traditional Slices de Tomar, made only with egg yolks and cooked in a double boiler in a very special pot, invented by a city coppersmith in the middle of the last century.

To the south, the Convento de São Francisco, where you can currently visit the curious Museum of Matches and, to the north, the former Convento da Anunciada. To the east, on the site of the current Levada Museum, we see the old mills and mills that worked with the force of the Nabão River that runs through the city. On one of the banks, there is the Convent of Santa Iria and in that direction, a little further away, the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, where the tombs of several Templars are located, including that of Gualdim Pais, the first master, who died in 1195.

The whole city was organized from this nucleus, also the stage of one of the biggest traditional events, the Festa dos Tabuleiros.

In addition to having witnessed the struggles of the Christian Reconquest, in the century. XII, Tomar preserves an interesting testimony of the Hebrew religion, the ancient Synagogue of the century. XV, today the Luso-Hebrew Museum of Abraão Zacuto, dedicated to the distinguished fourteenth century astronomer and mathematician. Located on the old Rua da Judiaria, it has a valuable documentary and epigraphic collection. Note the holes that can be seen in each corner and that indicate the placement of clay jars on the wall to increase the acoustic conditions of the space.

To the points of interest already mentioned, there is the Núcleo de Arte Contemporânea, where the collection of one of the most important Portuguese art historians of the century is kept. XX, Professor José-Augusto França.

To rest from the cultural tour, there is nothing like a break at Mouchão Park. It is a cool place, where you can see the Mouchão Wheel, a wooden hydraulic wheel. It is an ex-libris of the city and evokes the times when the mills, mills and cultivation areas along the river contributed to Tomar's economic prosperity.

But there are also reasons to stroll nearby, such as Castelo de Bode, one of the largest reservoirs in the country, where you can take a quiet cruise with lunch on board or opt for a variety of water sports. Also like the small islet of the Tagus River where the Castle of Almourol is located or the riverside town of Dornes, for those who want to deepen their visit to the Templar places in the region. For a more complete itinerary, we suggest the World Heritage Tours - “In the Heart of Portugal”.

[4k] Tomar, Portugal. Former seat of the Order of the Templar Knights. Unesco World Heritage Site.

#Tomar #Portugal #mustvisit #mustvisitplaces

Former seat of the Order of the Templar Knights, Tomar is a city of great charm for its artistic and cultural wealth, whose greatest expression is in the Convent of Christ, one of the chief works of the Portuguese Renaissance.

Whatever your reason for visiting the city, climbing up to the Templar castle and discovering the monumental work of the Convent of Christ is a must. The Charola (Rotunda) is the oldest part. This Templar chapel was built in the 12th century, like the castle, which was at the time the Kingdom’s most up-to-date and advanced military set-up, inspired by the fortifications of the Holy Land. It was converted into a Chancel during the restoration works ordered by King Manuel I in the 16th century, when the complex gained the architectural splendour, kept intact to this day, which earned it World Heritage Site status.

It’s worth visiting the Convent at length to discover some of its precious details, such as the depictions on the Renaissance portal, the unique symbolism of the Manueline Window in the Chapter Hall, the architectural details in the Main Cloister and the spaces connected to Templar rituals. To better understand its history, it’s important to know how the Order of the Knights Templar became the Order of Christ, upholding their power, knowledge and wealth in Portugal. The famous Henry, the Navigator, the mentor of the Discoveries, was one of its most important governors and protectors.

From the Convent, you can walk down through the Sete Montes Woods to the historic centre. Halfway along the road, you will see the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Chapel, a small Renaissance jewel by João de Castilho, a Portuguese who also worked in the Convent.

Then you must visit Tomar. The oldest mediaeval urban area has a cross-shaped layout, orientated along the points of the compass, with a convent at each end. The Praça da República, with its Main Church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, marks its centre, with the Castle hill and the Convent of Christ to the west. The surrounding streets are lined with traditional shops, including the oldest café where the delights of the local pastries can be appreciated: almond and squash queijadas (cheese cakes) and the traditional Fatias de Tomar (Tomar slices) made with just egg yolks and cooked in a bain-marie in a very special pot, invented by a local tinsmith in the mid-20th century.

To the south is the Convent of São Francisco, where you can visit today the interesting Museu dos Fósforos (Match Museum), and to the north the former Convent of Anunciada. To the east, on the site of the current Museu da Levada, you can see the old mills, powered by the River Nabão which crosses the city. On one of its banks is the Convent of Santa Iria, and a little further along, the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, which houses the tombs of several Knights Templar, including that of Gualdim Pais, the first master, who died in 1195.

The whole town expanded from this core, which is also the setting for one of the chief traditional events, the Tabuleiros Festival.

Tomar has not only witnessed the fighting of the Christian Reconquest in the 12th century, but also preserves an interesting testimony to the Jewish religion, in the old 15th century Synagogue, currently the Abraão Zacuto Luso-Hebrew Museum, devoted to this distinguished 15th century astronomer and mathematician. Located in the former Rua da Judiaria, it contains a valuable documentary and epigraphic collection.

Besides the above points of interest, there is also the Centre for Contemporary Art which houses the collection of one of the most important Portuguese art historians of the 20th century, Professor José-Augusto França.

For a rest from the cultural tour there’s nothing better than a break in Mouchão Park. This is a cool place where you can see the Mouchão Wheel, a wooden water wheel, which is a landmark of the city and evokes the time when mills, oil presses and farmland along the river all contributed to Tomar’s economic prosperity.

But there are reasons for further visits in the vicinity, such as Castelo de Bode, one of the largest reservoirs in the country, where you can go on a pleasant cruise with lunch on board, or choose from a wide range of water sports, as well as the islet on the River Tagus where Almourol Castle is located, or the riverside town of Dornes for those who seek a better knowledge about the region’s Templar sites. (EN) The city of LAGOS (Portugal) is situated in the west of the Algarve between Portimão and Sagres. Its location made it the centre of portuguese discoveries from the fifteenth century (1418). The Silk and Spice Route, blocked in 1453, motivated the portuguese to search for an alternative surrounding Africa to Asia. Portugal connected directly by sea the producing regions of the spices to its markets in Europe. Due to its economic importance, Lagos was elevated as a city by King D. Sebastião in 1573. There is a replica of Boa Esperança (Good Hope) Caravel in Lagos near the marina. It was used during the exploration of the Atlantic Ocean and the coast of Africa during the fifteenth century.
