The city Yoshkar-Ola capital of the Republic Mari El. Initially, the capital of Mari El was called Tsarevokokshaisk and served as a military fortification. He was built in the 16th century by order of the Russian Tsar Fedor Ioannovich. They did this in order to strengthen the royal power and subordinate the local population-the small Finno-Ugric nation Mari.
Today, in the center Yoshkar-Ola, thousands of people live in barracks and go to the outdoor toilets to relieve themselves.

Yoshkar-Ola: Florence in the center of Russia
Yoshkar-Ola is a small provincial town in the center of the European part of Russia. Before the revolution, this city was called Tsarevokokshaisk (Tsaryov city). At the time of Ivan the Terrible, Tsarevokokshaisk was the easternmost city on the border of Russia, and more specifically, the fortification on the border with the Kazan Khanate.
In Soviet times, there were many military factories and strategic military missile units located here.
After the collapse of the USSR, the city of Yoshkar-Ola became one of the most depressed cities in Russia.
In times of high oil prices, the city began to change. At that time, the city of Yoshkar-Ola and the Republic of Mari El were headed by a strange man, Leonid Markelov.
Leonid Markelov was a fan of Italy. Therefore, the city began to appear buildings similar to the monuments of architecture of Italy, as well as numerous churches. We traveled to Yakutsk in the middle of winter to find out how people here survive in the toughest climate in the world. Little did we know, we would manage to time it so perfect that we would actually arrive during the coldest day in the last 20 years (-63'C / '81.5'F).
The lowest air temperature ever recorded in this region is -96°F (-71°C). The coldest town is Oymyakon, which is also in Yakutia, Siberia.
Life up here in the coldest city and region on planet earth is tough, and winter is long, however, people have lived here for centuries. The Yakut (Sakha) people have called this region home for generations and their unique culture & attitude to life has helped them thrive here in cold tundra of Yakutia, Siberia.
