Oisterwijk, The Netherlands
The oldest mention of the surroundings of Oisterwijk is in the Liber aureus from 1191, which contains the text of a deed that is said to date from 21 May 709, but which no longer exists. This states that Saint Willibrordus would have been given a domain in Alphen and that the deed would have been drawn up in Tilburg (actum publice Tilliburgis).

Later, two parishes arose in this area: West-Tilburg and East-Tilburg. The latter was dedicated to Saint Peter. The parish of Enschot was still located between these two parishes, while chapels were founded in Berkel and Helvoirt, and later also in Udenhout. The Lord of Tilburg had a motte-and-bailey castle, called Ter Borch, which was probably located at the confluence of the Voorste Stroom and the Achterste Stroom. In the vicinity of this was also the Watermill Ter Borch, which already existed in 1300 and was demolished in 1924.
Oisterwijk received market rights from Duke Hendrik I of Brabant in 1212 and was founded on the territory of the parish of East Tilburg. This also explains the name 'Oisterwijk'. The foundation of Oisterwijk and four other freedoms (oppida libera que de novo feceramus) took place in order to expand the Duke's sphere of influence and resulted from an agreement with the lord of Breda. The local lords were gradually forced to recognize the duke as their liege lord. In 1230 the duke granted the new village freedom rights. These included market rights and exemptions from certain taxes, but not the right to wall the city or tolls on the Rhine. Gradually, the significance of the settlement of Oisterwijk increased at the expense of that of the parish of Oost-Tilburg and 'Oisterwijk' became the only term used for the whole of the old village of Oost-Tilburg around the church and Oisterwijk around De Lind. The settlement opted for the right of 's-Hertogenbosch and became the chief town of the Kwartier van Oisterwijk, one of the four quarters of the Meierij van 's-Hertogenbosch. In 1231 the patronage rights of the Sint-Petruskerk came into the hands of the Sint-Geertrui abbey in Leuven. In 1259 there was first mention of an aldermen's bench.

We took a P&O ferry from Dover UK to Calais France and then drove around 3 hours to our stunning 4 star hotel in Oisterwijk Netherlands where we stayed for 4 nights 27th-31st December 2017
During our stay we are going to be visiting the amazing Efteling, Phantasialand, Toverland and new park for us, Plopsaland De Panne for there Christmas events

Nederland - Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen
Vlakbij Oisterwijk vind je de Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen, een afwisselend bosgebied met sfeervolle vennen en verscholen heideveldjes. Heerlijk om doorheen te wandelen. Overal zijn doorkijkjes en op een van de vele bankjes kun je even wegdromen bij de vennen. Stevige doorstappers kunnen verder wandelen in het aangrenzende natuurgebied Kampina.
De meeste vennen in dit natuurgebied ontstonden na de laatste ijstijd. IJzige poolwinden bliezen zand op tot heuveltjes, die nu nog goed te zien zijn in het bos. Achter de heuvels vulden de uitgewaaide kommen zich met regenwater en zo ontstonden tientallen vennen. Een leemlaag in de bodem zorgt ervoor dat het water niet wegzakt. Een uitzondering is het Kolkven, dat door het kolkende water van een oude rivier is ontstaan.
Andere vennen herinneren aan hun vroegere gebruiksfunctie, zoals de Brouwkuip, waar bierbrouwers hun kuipen reinigden. Het Brandven dankt zijn naam aan het feit dat hier vroeger bluswater uitgehaald werd. Weer andere zijn vernoemd naar bekende families of personen, zoals het Speijckven en Van Esschenven. Zo heeft ieder meertje zijn eigen sfeer, zijn eigen natuur en zijn eigen verhaal. Ontdek het tijdens één van de vele wandelroutes door dit verrassende vennengebied vol kronkelende paadjes en doorkijkjes.
