Mind-blowing Norway Road Trip Summer Adventure!!

The West Norweigan Fjord region is one of the best places for a summer road trip you will find anywhere in the world. The landscapes are incredible, the fjords beautiful, and there are so many amazing hikes and activities both on land, ice, and the water that make it an action-packed adventure and a wonderful place to explore.

Some of the best Norway road trip highlights can be found on the side of the road and away from the main tourist spots, and you could turn down almost any road and find a unique place. This is why we recommend renting a car and exploring rather than being on a bus tour.

Is Norway the most beautiful country in the world? We will show some of the best places to visit in this Norway travel guide.

BERGEN, NORWAY | Best Things To Do In & Around Bergen

The city of Bergen is located along the southwestern coast of Norway. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, it’s a haven for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. But as a UNESCO World Heritage City, Bergen also combines history, culture, and an interesting urban life. This charming city might have a small-town feel, but it has tons of entertaining activities to offer. In this video, we break down our 6 favorite things to do in and around Bergen.

???? WHERE TO STAY IN BERGEN:
- Barfot Apartments (budget option with kitchen in center of town):

6. Try the local food
Norwegian culture is highly influenced by fishing and this is also visible in their cuisine. Visit Bergen’s fish market at the waterfront and you’ll see merchants selling their fresh catch of the day as they have for centuries. Other dishes Norwegians are proud of is “boller” (sweet buns) and “Pølse” (Norwegian hot dogs).

5. Visit a museum on a rainy day
Bergen has many interesting museums that you can visit, such as the Norway Fisheries Museum, the Lepra museum, and the Bergen University Museum of Natural History.

☑️ List of more museums:

4. Day hike to highest peak in Bergen municipality
Sitting between various mountains, Bergen naturally has plenty of great hiking terrain. At 987 meters tall, Gullfjellet is the highest peak in Bergen municipality and a classic for local hikers. Located a bit outside the city, this trail feels truly remote and is a great escape. The trail starts at Osavatnet and runs past a cabin (Redningshytten) on the way to the summit. To get to the trailhead, it’s best to rent a car or combine public transportation with a taxi ride.

3. Bryggen & the Hanseatic Museum
Bryggen is one of Bergen's most iconic and popular attractions. With its vibrant atmosphere, you will find plenty of things to do. You can stroll through the narrow, crooked alleyways, grab a local beer at one of the many cafés, and learn about its historic importance at the Hanseatic Museum. A free guided tour is included when visiting the museum, during which you get to know more about the Hanseatic merchants and their daily life at Bryggen.

☑️ Book your visit:

2. Hike one of the 7 peaks
Bergen is surrounded by seven peaks, and you can hike them all! The most popular ones are Mount Fløyen and Mount Ulriken, which are easily accessible by foot or bus from the city center. Both are short but steep hikes of a few kilometers each, offering spectacular views of the city, the fjord, and the ocean from the top. There is a cable car to Ulriken and a railway to Fløyen if you don't want to hike.

1. Fjord Cruise
Norway is known for its fjords, and so is Bergen. If this is your first time in Norway, make sure to go on a day tour of the fjords. Bergen offers a wide variety of guided tours, with Mostraumen being the most popular and accessible one. During a 3 hour cruise, you will see the varied western Norway fjord landscapes, consisting of steep cliffs and waterfalls. You eventually reach the Mostraumen Strait and the tiny village of Mo!

☑️ Book your fjord cruise:

Road Trip from Gaustatoppen to Odda, Norway, 4k

Exciting and bright road trip and adventure. We drove from the mighty and still very snowy peak of Gaustatoppen despite June, through the high-altitude plateau of Hardangervidda to the full-flowing and rumbling waterfalls Låtefossen and Vøringsfossen. We drove along the Fv13 tourist road along the picturesque Sørfjorden fjord, on the banks of which there is a cozy town of Odda with gingerbread houses right on the mountain slopes.

The weather was constantly changing, the sun came out and then disappeared, and sometimes it even began to rain. The air temperature also changed, we either froze in winter jackets or remained in T-shirts! The drops were from -3 at the top of Gaustatoppen to +25 degrees on the banks of the Sørfjorden.

In general, the beginning of June in Norway is that amazing time of the year when you can travel from summer to winter and back in one day. And it was with such an adventure that we decided to start our journey!

Gradually climbing the serpentine uphill from the city of Rjukan, the greenery of the valley was replaced by an uncertain beginning of spring and yellow colors.
But our goal was to get to the snow on top of Gaustatoppen, the highest mountain in the Vestfold and Telemark regions! And we decided to do it as unusually as possible on a train inside the mount - Gaustabanen, which used to be a secret military facility, and now lifts tourists up the mountain!
By the way, Gaustabanen is a unique attraction. There are no analogs of this railway in Northern Europe!
There are wonderful views from the top, and it felt like we had almost touched the sky.
You can see a full review of this railway here:

Then we went to the town of Geilo, where we stopped at a campsite and spent the night!
The next day we unfastened and left the caravan to rest. After all, our path lay along the tourist road Fv13, and once we were already driving along with it, in some places it is very narrow and more comfortable, and most importantly, it is faster to pass it by car, especially in the tourist season! What we did!

The first target was the Låtefossen Twin Falls. And when the snow is still melting on the tops of the mountains, the waterfall appears before enthusiastic glances in all its beauty and strength! It is amazing that it breaks down from the mountain and rumbles right next to the highway and washes passing cars with its waters! It's unforgettable!

We also stopped for a walk in the cute town of Odda, and then slowly, admiring and enjoying every turn, the color of the water and the sheer mountains, we drove along the Sørfjorden fjord. We were surprised and delighted by the neat orchards along its banks. They looked especially unusual against the backdrop of snowy peaks.
Further, our path lay to the Vøringsfossen waterfall. This is the highest waterfall in Norway. Its total height is 182 m, and the height of the free fall of water is 145 m. In 2020, a very unusual pedestrian bridge was built here right over the abyss between two sheer cliffs, the height difference of which is 16 meters. So we checked ourselves and walked across this bridge! We recommend it to everyone! It's really beautiful there!

We hope you enjoy traveling with us, feel free to ask your questions and write your wishes in the comments, we are always pleased to read them! ;)
