Laufen Germany (Sightseeing,What to do,What to see)

Laufen is a town on the southeastern border of Bavaria, Germany with Austria. It was first mentioned in a deed of 748. The rapids that gave the town the name (Laufen = rapid running waters) were also responsible for the town's wealth from the salt trade. Small boats that transported the extremely valuable cargo from the rapids north of Salzburg were reloaded at Laufen to larger boats by privilege of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. When the independent principality was finally divided in 1816 between the Bavarian kingdom and the Habsburg Empire in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars, the town was split into a Bavarian part carrying the name of Laufen and into an Austrian town (the former Laufen suburbs on the right hand side of the river) by the name of Oberndorf. With the building of railways by the middle of the 19th century the transport of salt on the river Salzach came to an end, taking away the former source of wealth. A number of floods devastated both towns by the end of the century. The flood of 1899 destroyed the old bridge. A new iron bridge was built in a safer place up the river and opened jointly by the King of Bavaria and the Austrian Emperor in 1903.

Salzburg, Austria, a city renowned for its musical heritage, historical significance, and the natural beauty that surrounds it, is a destination that captivates visitors from around the globe. Known as the City of Mozart, the City of Music, and intriguingly, the City of Salt, Salzburg's name, translating to Salt Castle, hints at its historical importance in the salt trade, with the Salzach River once bustling with barges carrying this precious mineral. This enchanting city, nestled amidst majestic cliffs and Baroque architecture, offers a myriad of experiences that weave together the threads of history, culture, and natural splendor.

Our journey through Salzburg begins with a ride on the funicular, leading us to the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress. Perched atop a cliff, this fortress is not only a symbol of Salzburg's medieval might but also a treasure trove of museums that narrate tales of yore. Within its walls, visitors can explore a vast collection of artifacts that bring to life the city's storied past.

The exploration continues as we delve into the early Christian catacombs, etched into the very rock upon which the city stands, and wander through the serene Petersfriedhof, a cemetery that reflects the solemn beauty of Salzburg's history. The old town, with its iconic Baroque architecture, domes, and spires, offers panoramic views that are simply breathtaking.

Culinary adventures await with a sampling of Austrian foods, where traditional flavors tell stories of Salzburg's cultural heritage. Beyond the city's historical and gastronomic offerings, Salzburg serves as a gateway to picturesque day trips, from the historic Werfen to the hiking trails of Gaisberg, each adventure promising its own unique set of memories.

Not to be missed are the landmarks that pay homage to Salzburg's most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with visits to his birthplace and the vibrant Mozart Square. The Kollegienkirche and the tranquil stroll along the Salzach River further enrich the Salzburg experience, leading visitors to the splendid Mirabell Palace and Gardens, an epitome of Baroque garden design.

The journey through Salzburg is made effortless with the city's efficient transportation system, ensuring that every corner of this historic city is within easy reach. From the serene Salzach Island Bar to the majestic views atop Mönchsberg, Salzburg invites travelers to immerse themselves in its rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty.

Silent Night Chapel Vlog - Christmas In Oberndorf

Welcome to this, Silent Night Chapel Vlog.

Over the last few weeks, we have been on the search for, 'our' Christmas, and this week's vlog takes is on a detour from Salzburg, Austria, and to the beautiful and very Christmassy town of Oberndorf, just outside of Salzburg, Austria.

The Silent Night Chapel is a memorial chapel built on the site of the location where the world's favourite Christmas Carol, Silent Night was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1818.

In 1816, young priest, Joseph Mohr, wrote a 6 verse poem, to try and raise good feeling and hope during a time of great hardship.

Joseph Mohr was transferred to the church of St Nicholas, in the Austrian town of Oberndorf and had to have a Christmas Carol to perform on the Christmas Eve mass in 1818.

Joseph called upon his friend and music teacher, Franz Xaver Gruber who composed a melody and music to go with the poem, and the both of them performed Silent Night, or, Stille Nacht, as it is in German, with an acoustic guitar to accompany them, as the church organ had been damaged by mice.

During the 1890's, St Nicholas' Church became so damaged, not helped by regular flooding from the Salzach River and was replaced by a new church in 1906. In 1913, St Nicholas was demolished and only a few stones from the demolished church still stand there today.

In 1937, this memorial chapel, The Silent Night Memorial Chapel was completed and stands on the exact site where this special carol was first performed.

In this vlog, we show you everything you need to know if visiting the chapel yourself. We show how to get there, what facilities they have, where to eat and much more. We also tell the history and the story of this special building.

This is the final full vlog in our series of Searching For Christmas. A search which has taken us from North Wales to London, from Munich to Salzburg. It would be great if you would check out some of these videos, or any other of our vlogs.

This experience certainly did make us feel like we had found Christmas, and we would like to wish a very Happy Christmas or Festive Season, however you chose to celebrate (or not) these times.

Huge thank you for all of the support and here's to a great 2023 x

Just a quick note, that this week, we will also be posting 2 more virtual walking tour videos, one of the main Christmas Market in Salzburg and one of a walk around this Silent Night Chapel.

Now back to working 6 or 7 days a week again, with very little time off, our happy time is getting out there on our brief times off together and making short travel videos that we are now sharing with you. Salzburg Austria Ultimate Guide (Sightseeing,What to do,What to see)

The town is on the site of the Roman settlement of Iuvavum. Salzburg was founded as an episcopal see in 696 and became a seat of the archbishop in 798. Its main sources of income were salt extraction, trade, and gold mining. The fortress of Hohensalzburg, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, dates from the 11th century. In the 17th century, Salzburg became a center of the Counter-Reformation, with monasteries and numerous Baroque churches built.
Salzburg's historic center (Altstadt) is renowned for its Baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. The historic center was enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The city has three universities and a large population of students. Tourists also visit Salzburg to tour the historic center and the scenic Alpine surroundings.

Wonderful Village in Southern Germany - Villingen-Schwenningen 4K Ultra HD Footage

Villingen-Schwenningen is a city located in Germany in the southwest of the Land of Baden-Württemberg. With around 81,000 inhabitants, the municipality is the largest in the Black Forest-Baar district.

The particularity of the city lies in the fact that it consists of two entities corresponding to two formerly independent towns, namely Villingen and Schwenningen. The two former municipalities merged in 1972 to become Villingen-Schwenningen. Another particularity is geographical: between the two old towns less than 5 kilometers apart, runs along a north-south axis the watershed between the North Sea (to the north) and the Black Sea (to the east).

Vienna, the capital of Austria, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The city is home to a number of attractions, including the Vienna State Opera, the Hofburg Palace, and Saint Stephen's Cathedral.

Austria is a country that has something to offer everyone, whether you're looking for a city break or a mountain getaway. With its stunning scenery, rich history, and vibrant culture, Austria is sure to have something that will appeal to you.

The first humans arrived in Austria around 35,000 BC. Austria was originally settled by Celtic tribes. In 15 BC, the Romans conquered the country and ruled it for over 400 years. In the 5th century AD, the area was overrun by the Germanic Lombards, and in the 6th century, the Avars. The Franks took control of the area in the 9th century.

Austria became a duchy in the 10th century, and a kingdom in the 12th century. The country was ruled by the Habsburg dynasty from 1278 until 1918. In 1867, Austria-Hungary was formed as a dual monarchy. The Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved in 1918 at the end of World War I.

The First Republic was established in 1919. The Austro-Fascist corporate state known as the Ständestaat was established in 1934. Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938.

After World War II, Austria was occupied by the Allies and divided into four zones. The country was reunited in 1955.

Today, Austria is a prosperous country with a strong economy and a popular tourist destination. However, it has not always been this way. In the past, Austria has suffered from war and economic hardship.

But through hard work and determination, the Austrian people have rebuilt their country and made it the thriving nation it is today. A country that is well known for its stunning mountain scenery, rich cultural heritage, and delicious food.

Exploring the Nuremberg Christmas Market - Travel Vlog | Is it the best Christmas Market in Europe??

Exploring the Nuremberg Christmas Market - Travel Vlog | Is it the best Christmas Market in Europe??

After a cold and rainy day at the Munich Christmas Markets, we decided to catch a train 100 miles (160 km) north to the city of Nuremberg (Nürnberg) to get a little Christmas market redemption at the Nuremberg Christmas Market (Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt) which is arguably the most famous (with around 2 million visitors each year) and some would even say the best Christmas market in all of Europe! After experiencing it firsthand, we can see why this market ranks near the top of pretty much every traveler's must-visit Christmas market list. The second that you arrive at the Hauptmarkt – the central square where the market takes place – the smell of warm Glühwein (mulled wine), fresh Lebkuchen (gingerbread), and Nürnberg Rostbratwurst (grilled sausage) take over your senses. The red and white candy-cane-like rooftops on the 180+ neatly aligned festive stalls look to be straight out of a European Hallmark movie, and the twin, 50-feet (15-meter) high Christmas trees on either side of The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) are the final touches that make the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt pure Christmas magic.

Let us know your favorite European Christmas Markets!

Oberndorf bei Salzburg Austria (Sightseeing,What to do,What to see)

Oberndorf bei Salzburg is a town in the Austrian state of Salzburg, about 17 km north of the City of Salzburg. It is situated on the river Salzach in the Flachgau district. Its twin sister-town across the Salzach Bridge is Laufen in Bavaria. The town was split in two in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars when the former Principality of the Salzburg Archbishops was divided in 1816 following the Congress of Vienna into a part taken by the Kingdom of Bavaria and a part taken by the Austrian Empire.

Oberndorf Austria | Magical Daytrip From Salzburg

It wasn't until after we booked our Austria-Germany trip that we first heard of Oberndorf. When doing some research and watching some YouTube videos from other creators, we realized that it was such a special opportunity to visit this place during Christmas. The main reason being that it has the famous little chapel that sits on the exact site where Silent Night was first performed on Christmas Eve in the year 1818. We were a 10 minute walk to the Salzburg train station from our hotel and only a 30 minute train & 12 minute walk to the chapel and Oberndorf Christmas Market. We would highly recommend doing this little excursion from Salzburg if you are in the area and have some extra time to explore the surrounding communities. We hope you enjoy this video and as always, thanks for tuning in!!

TOP Things to do at Christmas In Salzburg Austria - Full Winter Guide

Are you thinking of visiting Salzburg in Austria at Christmas? If so, then check out this TOP things to do and see at Christmas in Salzburg, Austria vlog.

Starting off in Munich, Germany, we continue our search to find Christmas. We jump on the train and head to Salzburg in Austria.

We were only there for little over 24 hours, but we crammed so much into the day and would love to share that Christmas journey with you.

After checking into our hotel - Lasserhof, we made our way to Schloss Mirabell, or Mirabell Palace to check out the small, but perfectly formed Christmas markets around the palace walls. We then took a look at the palace gardens, which is more famous for the Do Re Me scene in the musical film of The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews.

We headed towards the main old town, over the famous Makarsteg Bridge over the Salzach River, passed the birthplace of Mozart and into the main Christmas market at the foot of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

We decided to go on a bit of an adventure and make our way 25 minutes by train to Oberndorf to visit The Silent Night Memorial Chapel.

This is a memorial chapel built on the site of St Nicolas Church, in Oberndorf, which is where Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber first performed their newly written carol, Silent Night, or Stille Nacht for the first time, on Christmas Eve 1818.

If you find this part of the video, be sure to check out our next video, which is a full vlog about the Silent Night Chapel. It features everything you need to know about visiting it, transport, costs, facilities etc.

After a beautiful sunset at the Silent Night Chapel, we head back to the Christmas Markets in Salzburg to spend a lovely evening soaking up the Austrian Christmas atmosphere, before getting some food at the famous Gablerbrau Restaurant, one of Salzburg's oldest Inns then heading back to the Lasserhof Hotel to get some rest after a long day of walking and travelling.

The following morning, we only had around 2 to 3 hours to look around, before we had to get our train back to Munich airport, but we managed to check out more of the beautiful city of Salzburg. We found more hidden Christmas markets and found the birthplace of Joseph Mohr - of Silent Night fame.

As we were in Salzburg, we had to stop by Wills' favourite shop in the world, 'Christmas In Salzburg' - a shop we discovered around 20 years ago when we visited Salzburg for the first time.

It was a very busy 24 hours, but hopefully this video will show you the things you can see in do if you only have a day or so in the beautiful city of Salzburg, Austria at Christmas Time.

If you're still feeling Christmassy, make sure you check out the rest of this series of Searching For Christmas, starting in North Wales, then heading down to London, over to Munich, Germany and then finishing in Salzburg, Austria.

⭐ About Postcard & A Pint:
Welcome to the official Postcard & A Pint YouTube channel.
Postcard & A Pint was thought up by my partner, Rachel & myself, Wills one day while taking our daily 1 hour exercise during the lockdown of 2020. All of a sudden, we were spending more time together, not working 6 or 7 days a week in the arts industry, and binge watching travel programs, and we were actually really enjoying it, and it made us re-evaluate what was important in life for us. Now back to working 6 or 7 days a week again, with very little time off, our happy time is getting out there on our brief times off together and making short travel videos that we are now sharing with you. It's just a bit of fun, and great for our sanity. Your support is hugely appreciated x
