The Dark Side of Living in The Netherlands

What are the downsides of living in the Netherlands? There is a wide variety of advantages that come along with relocating to the Netherlands. The Netherlands is a country that has a lot to offer everybody, whether they are searching for a higher standard of life, more work prospects, or a location to live that is cheaper. Let's not sugarcoat things and have an honest conversation about some of the challenges you could face if you decide to relocate to the Netherlands.
1. It’s an expensive country
The Netherlands is well-known for having some of the highest tax rates in the world, and almost everything is subject to taxation. The income tax is particularly high in contrast to those of other countries in Europe. You could also discover that the prices of electronic goods are higher in the Netherlands (here's a pro tip: shop on the German Amazon), and that the prices of some foods are also a little bit more. On the other hand, it is possible to acquire some excellent prices if you have learned how to shop and where to shop. The relationship between supply and demand is to blame for the typically high cost of rent throughout the whole of the United States. Jobs, in general, pay very well here; yet, in the end, it all comes down to how you look at it.
2. You have to learn a new language
Even though most Dutch people are aware of this fact, conversational English is not sufficient. You are going to need to educate yourself in Dutch since the majority of the labels, notices, goods, and parcels are all in Dutch. You are going to have to utilize Google Translate whenever you go to public locations like the grocery or railway stations until you master the local language.
It is well known that the service sector in the Netherlands is notorious for being less helpful and more difficult to navigate than in other nations. Even if someone has been downright impolite to us extremely seldom, the Dutch aren't exactly famed for their ability to provide good customer service.
You are either going to have to wait an eternity to speak to the manager, you are going to be in a line of 25 people on the phone, or you are going to have to wait weeks for a response to an email. Not to mention the level of frustration that a good number of individuals experience whenever they are confronted with tasks such as receiving mail or shipments.
3. Accommodation
Insane housing shortages are plaguing the Netherlands at the moment. As a result, it is essential to do apartment hunting in advance of relocating to this location for permanent residence. There are both furnished and unfurnished apartments available to choose. The furnished homes come with very huge rent prices. When you rent a property that isn't equipped, you may think you're getting a good deal, but in reality, you have to buy everything, even rugs and appliances that are necessary. In addition, property owners are reaping the benefits of the housing shortage by charging their renters unreasonable prices.
Due to the unfortunate state of affairs in the housing market in the Netherlands, it is essential that you begin your search for a new place to call home at the earliest possible date. Bear in mind that there are no assurances that you will locate a location right away; yet, you should not give up hope!
If you want to live in Amsterdam or one of the other cities in the Randstad, you need be extremely patient in your hunt for a new house, and you should prepare for a little bit of more wiggle space in your budget.

Kolhorn and Medemblik , North Holland, The Netherlands

Kolhorn is a village in the West Frisian municipality of Hollands Kroon in the province of North Holland.
Kolhorn is mentioned for the first time in 1288. The village of Colhorn was situated on the Zuiderzee until 1844 and was a fishing village. Since the reclamation of the Groetpolder, the Waardpolder and the Wieringermeer, the village lies about 20 kilometres inland.
Remains of the previous situation can still be seen on the West Frisian Circular Dike. On the dike there are still a few old fines (barns). It used to store peat and other merchandise awaiting further inland transport. Two museums are housed in the fines. Kolhorn is largely a government-protected village-village. The village also has a village church from the 17th century the Laurenskerk.

Medemblik is the oldest city in West Frisia: in 1289 it acquired city rights from Count Floris V, who at that time had just definitively subjected West Frisia to his grave authority. Until 2007, Medemblik was an independent municipality, to which no other residences belonged. The municipality was one of the smallest in the province of North Holland. The current municipality of Medemblik was the result of a merger with the municipalities of Noorder-Koggenland and Wognum as of 1 January 2007, followed by a merger with the municipalities of Wervershoof and Andijk as of 1 January 2011.
Medemblik has many historic facades, and a town hall from 1939 by the architect A.J. Kropholler. There is also a working corn mill (Molen De Herder, rebuilt 1986-1990) and the Dutch Steam Machine Museum is housed in the former steam pumping station De Vier Noorder Koggen. Medemblik has more than 80 national monuments.
Since 1887, Medemblik has had a rail connection with Hoorn. The Medemblik station building dates from the opening year. Nowadays this line is used by the Museum Steam Tram Hoorn-Medemblik.

Netherlands Hoorn, Stoomtram Museum (Steam Tram)

The footbridge from the NS station takes you to the old steam tram station. Most people walk straight on and sit on the tram or when they arrive they walk out immediately. It is really worth taking a look at the signal box and walk to the shed to see old steam locomotives and how the volunteers are working with the equipment. The tram ride to Medemblik takes about 50 minutes and stops (about 10 minutes) in Wognum where you can take a look at the old station building from 1887. In Medemblik you can return after a short visit with the steam tram or continue by boat to Enkhuizen (Historic Triangle).

Take a walk to the backside of the DAM

A dam is a barrier that stops or restricts the flow of water or underground streams. Reservoirs created by dams not only suppress floods but also provide water for activities such as irrigation, human consumption, industrial use, aquaculture, and navigability. Hydropower is often used in conjunction with dams to generate electricity. A dam can also be used to collect water or for storage of water which can be evenly distributed between locations. Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water, while other structures such as floodgates or levees (also known as dikes) are used to manage or prevent water flow into specific land regions.

The word dam can be traced back to Middle English,[1] and before that, from Middle Dutch, as seen in the names of many old cities.[2] The first known appearance of dam occurs in 1165. However, there is one village, Obdam, that is already mentioned in 1120. The word seems to be related to the Greek word taphos, meaning grave or grave hill.[citation needed] So the word should be understood as dike from dug out earth. The names of more than 40 places (with minor changes) from the Middle Dutch era (1150–1500 CE) such as Amsterdam (founded as 'Amstelredam' in the late 12th century) and Rotterdam, also bear testimony to the use of the word in Middle Dutch at that time.
Natural dams
Dams can also be created by natural geological forces. Volcanic dams are formed when lava flows, often basaltic, intercept the path of a stream or lake outlet, resulting in the creation of a natural impoundment. An example would be the eruptions of the Uinkaret volcanic field about 1.8 million–10,000 years ago, which created lava dams on the Colorado River in northern Arizona in the United States. The largest such lake grew to about 800 km (500 mi) in length before the failure of its dam. Glacial activity can also form natural dams, such as the damming of the Clark Fork in Montana by the Cordilleran Ice Sheet, which formed the 7,780 km2 (3,000 sq mi) Glacial Lake Missoula near the end of the last Ice Age. Moraine deposits left behind by glaciers can also dam rivers to form lakes, such as at Flathead Lake, also in Montana (see Moraine-dammed lake).

Natural disasters such as earthquakes and landslides frequently create landslide dams in mountainous regions with unstable local geology. Historical examples include the Usoi Dam in Tajikistan, which blocks the Murghab River to create Sarez Lake. At 560 m (1,840 ft) high, it is the tallest dam in the world, including both natural and man-made dams. A more recent example would be the creation of Attabad Lake by a landslide on Pakistan's Hunza River.

Natural dams often pose significant hazards to human settlements and infrastructure. The resulting lakes often flood inhabited areas, while a catastrophic failure of the dam could cause even greater damage, such as the failure of western Wyoming's Gros Ventre landslide dam in 1927, which wiped out the town of Kelly and resulted in the deaths of six people.
