The Best Books about New York City: Room for Books Episode 7

How many books can you squeeze into a New York City apartment? A lot. I use these stackable bookshelf boxes and each episode I'll review the books in one of them. It's like a mini bookshelf tour and book reviews mixed into one.

Poetry: Searching the Sources: Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, Ashok Vajpeyi, Ranjit Hoskote and Ruth Padel

Arvind Krishna Mehrotra was born in Lahore in 1947. He taught for many years at the University of Allahabad and lives in Dehradun. Among his recent books are a volume of essays titled Translating the Indian Past & Other Literary Histories, Blue Is Like Blue, the stories of Vinod Kumar Shukla (translated from the Hindi with Sara Rai) and Selected Poems and Translations in NYRB Poets.

Ashok Vajpeyi is a Hindi poet and critic and has been an instrumental figure in the arts in India. He has founded many cultural institutions, most notably the multi-arts complex Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University in Wardha, and The Raza Foundation. With more than 30 books of poetry and criticism published in Hindi, he has also written in English on Hindustani classical music and visual arts. His poetry has been published in various languages, including in Bengali, English, French, German, Gujarati, Marathi, Polish and Urdu.

Ranjit Hoskote is a poet, cultural theorist and curator. His six collections of poetry include Vanishing Act, Central Time and Jonahwhale. His translation of a celebrated 14th century Kashmiri woman saint’s poetry has appeared as I, Lalla: The Poems of Lal Ded. Hoskote curated India’s first-ever national pavilion at the Venice Biennale, under the title ‘Everyone Agrees: It’s About to Explode’. He has received the Sahitya Akademi Golden Jubilee Award, the Sahitya Akademi Translation Award and the S H Raza Literature Award. His poems have been translated into German, Hindi, Swedish, Spanish and Arabic.

Ruth Padel is an award-winning British poet, scholar and conservationist, Professor of Poetry at King's College London, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, author of Tigers in Red Weather, Learning to Make an Oud in Nazareth and the bestselling Darwin: A Life in Poems, a verse biography of her great-great-grandfather Charles Darwin. Her new book, Beethoven Variations, is a poetic journey into the life of Beethoven.

Three major Indian poets discuss the poetic imagination, searching its sources, inspirations and philosophy. Eminent English poet and translator Arvind Krishna Mehrotra speaks of his influences, among which he acknowledges William Carlos Williams and the Beat poets, as well as Kabir. Iconic Hindi poet and critic Ashok Vajpeyi has nurtured and founded many cultural institutions. Much-awarded English poet, cultural theorist and curator Ranjit Hoskote is the author of the recent Jonahwhale as well as the acclaimed translation of the Kashmiri poet Lai Ded. In conversation with award¬winning British poet and scholar Ruth Padel, they read from and discuss the contexts of their work as well as the wider canvas of poetics and aesthetic theories.

Sydney FC • Football in Australia | Italian Dreamtime SPECIAL #1

Alessandro Del Piero put Sydney FC on the map dice il general manager del Sydney Football Club, Tony Pignata (italiano di seconda generazione - i genitori sono emigrati dalla Campania negli anni '60).
Senza dubbio l'arrivo di Del Piero ha permesso al football australiano di crescere negli ultimi 2 anni ed essere conosciuto anche in Italia e in altre parti del mondo.

Italian Dreamtime ha seguito gli allenamenti e le partite del Sydney FC per qualche giorno, realizzando questo episodio speciale, mostrando come anche il calcio (e lo sport) italiano esportato in Australia - attraverso i valori di un campione come Alex Del Piero - possa diventare un simbolo del made in Italy.
