A fascinating lost place: The ruins of an old church in Mexico that was miraculously partially spared by the lava flow after a volcanic eruption.
Paricutin, about 140 km from Morelia, is a young volcanic cone that was formed quite surprisingly on 20th February 1943. Because of its formation, the Paricutín is often called one of the wonders of nature. Many contradictory stories surround its birth. The most famous is that of the farmer Dionisio Pulido and his wife Paula, who witnessed the birth of the volcano in their maize field with a dull plop. One day later, the volcano was already ten metres high, and on 22th February it was already 50 metres high.
Just one year after its formation, the mountain, which was soon named after the nearby village of Paricutín, had reached a height of 336 metres.
Over the years, the villages of San Juan Parangaricutiro and Paricutín were covered by ash rain and lava flows. As the destruction was slow, the villages could be evacuated in time and there were no victims among the population.
Only the church was partially spared, so that its tower protrudes from the cooled, metre-high lava and part of the altar area in the former nave is also exposed after the roof collapsed. An impressive and almost mystical place.

Con el objetivo de entender mejor a este suceso subimos los 2800 metros del volcán hasta llegar a su cráter.

This is one of Mexico's best kept secrets!
An abandoned church in the middle of a volcanic rock field. 60 years ago a whole town was destroyed by this volcano, and now just the church remains. A total adventure, and an explorer's dream. I teamed up with my urbex vlogging friends Exploring with Josh and Exploring with Cody to discover this amazing tourist attraction in Michoacan, Mexico. It was easily one of the most unbelievable locations I've visited in 2017. If you travel, it has to go on your bucket list.
La ciudad de San Juan and Volcan Paricutin have an amazing story.
In 1943 a crack opened up in a farmer's field, little did they know that a phenomenon brand new to science was about to be born. I'm no expert, but it's safe to say there have been hundreds of thousands of volcanos erupt while humans walked on two feet. This volcano however, was special. No volcano had ever been studied from birth to death. Every previous volcano had erupted some time in the past, formed a mountain, went dormant, then re-erupted. Volcán Parícutin attracted scientists from around the world.
Besides the fact that exploring this place was amazing... being able to climb onto the towers (a bit scary), and get into the basement Altar... We had it to ourselves for 4 hours. There was no admission fee, there were no tourists. At the end a school group came, but that was it. It really felt like a genuine experience. This place should be much more famous.
Not featured in this video was the town of Angahuan, the launching point to see the volcano and the church. There, they speak Purepecha, not spanish. Also, there are loud speakers that blast prayers during the day. A very unique experience in Mexico.

En este Febrero de 2023 se conmemora el 80 aniversario del nacimiento y erupción del Volcán Paricutín en un predio de la sierra purépecha en Michoacán México, por lo que es considerado el volcán más joven del mundo y el cual causó muchas expectativas a los vulcanólogos de la época que viajaron de todas partes del mundo para ser testigos de tal acontecimiento, y aprovechando la tecnología de la época lograrón grabar imagenes en vivo muchas de ellas quedaron guardadas en los archivos de la Filmoteca de la UNAM y gracias a ello podemos observar este documental extraído de un DVD que lanzó a la venta en 2006 el departamento de Difusion Cultural de la UNAM donde también se exhiben diferentes documentos cinematográficos existentes en la Filmoteca sobre la vida social, política, económica y cultural en el estado de Michoacán entre 1908 y 1988

The cathedral is surrounded by lava after the youngest volcano in the world was born in 1943. the volcano spewed lava for about 10 years, eventually engulfing the unfinished cathedral about 5 kms from the volcano itself. both the cathedral and volcano (now dormant and an easy climb) can be viewed up close. The best way is to arrive on horseback through beautiful pine forest from the nearby town of Angahuan. sorry about the poor picture quality- handheld camera

Hiking on the Volcano Paricutín, located in the Michoacán State, near the village of Angahuan, Mexico.
Some time ago with decided to launch our own challenge for this year (and maybe next year too): to climb the top 10 highest mountains of Mexico.
The Paricutín was not into the list, but as the Popocatepetl is not open (seismic activity), we decided to add the Paricutín to the list, for fun, and as a preparation.
And if not difficult, it was challenging, especially because of the many km of lava fields to go through. We did the hard side, and we do not regret any second of it!
The Paricutín is one of the youngest volcano on earth (if no the youngest). It started to erupt on February 1943 and transformed what was agriculture fields in this massive volcano, destroying the too close village of San Juan Parangaricutiro. Only the church is still visible under the massive amount of lava stones. The activity of the volcano lasted 9 years. We can now only see some smokes while climbing it and reaching its summit.

Ruinas del Paricutín es un viaje que no te puedes perder en el bello estado de Michoacán de Ocampo. El volcán enterró la iglesia dejando el altar intacto.Hay un mirador que cuenta con cabañas muy cómodas y bonitas, los precios van desde los $500 por habitación para dos personas, tienen también un restaurante bastante económico y con una sazón purépecha que en pocos lugares encontrarás, los desayunos son exquisitos, los chilaquiles son un agasajo y el chocolate en agua es una delicia, prueba todo lo que puedas del menú, ¡ellos saben cómo cocinar! Allí mismo puedes rentar un caballo que te lleve hasta la iglesia sepultada por lava por $150 por persona o puedes ir hasta el cráter del volcán Paricutín por $300 por persona más $300 del caballo del guía, se parte a las 8:00 y se regresa alrededor de las 17:00.
**EXPERIENCIA ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADA**
Queda a unos 45 minutos de Uruapan, la entrada es gratuita.
Antes de llegar al lugar podrás deleitarte con un mini mercado de comida tradicional de la zona, las quesadillas están deliciosas y para la sed que mejor una rica michelada con chilito de Michoacán.
