Alexandrovsky Outpost, now known as Aleksandrovsk-Sakhalinsky was originally a military post, established in 1862 and named after the Russian Emperor Alexander II.
In 1869, an agricultural farm was established there, which later grew into the village of Alexandrovka. At the time, it was known as Otchishi (落石) among Japanese...
When these photographs were taken, the outpost had become a place of hard labour in the Russian Empire, for predominantly criminal offenders who were worked in logging and the nearby coal mines....
The outpost served as the administrative centre for managing katorga, prisons, exile settlements, and the whole island until the October Revolution. Anton Chekhov lived here 1890 while gathering material for his book The Sakhalin Island.
Town status was granted to Alexandrovsky in 1917..
